List of Lists by Jeff Parr - click to view.
This is a compilation of mountain/hill lists known to me since, and including Sir Hugh Munro’s of 1891. The table includes major lists, sub lists, regional, obscure and some unpublished ones. However, I have not included lists of County Summits, which, I feel, should be a separate enterprise. Some will disagree to what constitutes a list, not regarding certain ones as worthy of inclusion, while others will see them as providing enjoyable excursions into the various and, sometimes, local mountain/hill walking regions. It is just a matter of opinion; after all we all have our different objectives when out in the hills. Some enthusiasts even pursue ‘Deleted Summit’ lists. Others just use a guidebook, seeing them as more relevant than Tables, while certain guidebooks contain their own individual lists. Some of these are included, which I hope will be helpful.
The major original lists and, where appropriate, most recent editions/updates, are printed in bold text, sub lists and some others, including charts are in plain text. Guidebooks in most cases, but not all, are in italics.
I have, at times, found the minimum re-ascent and the number of summits/tops to be a bit of a minefield, especially with some of the earlier lists, when the relevant mapping left much to be desired. Sometimes, I have simply put ‘C.F.’ (Complex Formula) and sometimes ‘Arbitrary’ when the compiler used his own judgement when deciding what was a ‘Top’ and what was not, rather than give lengthy explanations, with such as that of the Donald’s classification criteria. It is, after all, a table and not a written history. I am also aware, that on odd occasions, there are discrepancies in totals for the same list in different publications. I do not intend to get ‘bogged down’ explaining every little variation.
The tables will always be there in the future to be added to/improved etc. They are not being produced as the ‘Definitive Guide,’ just a genuine and honest attempt to inform and create interest without getting into too many complications. I am sure there will be mistakes and omissions. I would be very grateful therefore, for any advice regarding these, including information where I have left question marks. Finally I would like to acknowledge the help and contributions I have received from Alan Castle, Michael Dewey, John Kirk, Myrddyn Phillips, David Purchase, Rob Woodall and Eddie Ross.
Additional Note
This compilation is, as it stood, when I completed the task in December 2005. However, since that date, I have become aware of various other lists unknown to me at the time and, in retrospect, there are two or three ‘lists’ that I should not have included. Also, during the past few years, several new lists have appeared, including the HuMPs and the P30 Hills.
I am not intending to bring the document up to date, leaving it as it is, as it caused me, with my very limited computer skills, enough anguish at the time. Because of the wealth of information, I had great difficulty in how to present it all, with the result that the layout may confuse some. If so, I apologise. However, I do hope, that in some way, you find the document of interest.
