From spot height 254 on minor road west of summit. Car park closed for forestry works, but could just squeeze one car into space opposite track. Track to unclear summit covered in brash from forestry works, but easy enough to pick a way through. | KeithByTheC | 26/11/2023 |

Bald Hill from SU 72672 95874 | ronaldo333 | 11/09/2022 |
13.4 mile circular from car park near to summit. Following paths to Turville, then re-ascending Bald Hill from the east. We followed clearing in woods to very boring summit. Heading back to the car park afterwards. Surprisingly quiet for a Sunday on most of the paths around here except for the woods the summit is in which was quite busy. | DanTrig | 21/08/2022 |
The sort of summit that gives hill bagging a dodgy name. | summitter | 16/08/2022 |

From Cowleaze Wood Car Park. Misty rainy day very atmospheric in the woods. Visited the War memorial, High Point and the viewpoint on the opposite side of the road. | Jephcote83 | 23/12/2021 |
Parked at Cowleaze Wood Car Park. Did a 13km walk round Commonhill Wood and Charkley Shaw. Mediocre views. Most exciting view was sheep herding. Came back to discover my car had been broken into and contents stolen. A truly regrettable trip, that has probably put paid to my burgeoning ideas of hill bagging. | Merculean | 08/12/2021 |
Set off early for a long day in the saddle and the first of four county tops today. A woody location so not much of a view. | pclyndes | 11/06/2021 |
Circular walk starting and ending in Aston Rowat, first up Beacon Hill 255.7m crossed M40 using bridge, walked metaled road to Bald hill 257.2, then Shirburn Hill trig point then down to Ridgeway trail eastwards to complete loop. | Gareth1886 | 07/05/2021 |

Short stroll from the car park en route to a pub meet in Turville. Will have to return sometime to search for the elusive Chiltern gentian. | milimana | 08/08/2020 |
Pleasant enough stroll, clockwise along footpaths in Cowleaze Wood from car park of same name. Just 0.79km with only 12m of ascent so unsurprisingly a flat and indistinguishable summit feature. Plumped for area near HT electricity pole on or near 257m spot height.
Returned to van and drove 500m SW down road to bag trig pillar inside cow field west of road. | mntainman | 19/07/2020 |
Pleasant stroll through woods from car park. Found the memorial to WW2 Halifax crash, then on to discover the summit. On way home from Coventry with Geraldine. | Pete West | 05/07/2020 |

Worst mud we've had in a while, but also it's been raining almost non-stop for weeks and weeks. Would definitely like to come back to the area when it's a bit less sodden. HP is basically indistinguishable. | sjb | 23/11/2019 |
20km walk around Cowleaze Wood. | atreides7887 | 16/06/2019 |
A short walk from the car park to the junction by the telegraph poles. A good walk around to try and ensure got exactly the right point. A very popular spot with dog walkers. | andrewcoles | 02/06/2019 |
On own. Easy short walk from Cowleaze Wood car park to grassy open area at junction of paths with telegraph pole. Spotted a woodpecker high in the trees drumming and a red kite carrying a twig for nesting material. Very peaceful. | Beeliner | 22/03/2019 |
From the muddy and pot-holed CP along the muddy track. 15 minutes there and back. | Newton Maximus | 08/03/2019 |

A quick walk from the CP. With B and R. | jenx | 09/12/2018 |
A quick stop off on way home, gave us some fresh air. Walked up from Ridgeway path so that gave it a sense of hill! | nickywood1 | 22/11/2018 |
Solo. Parked in Cowleaze car park and went for a walk. Strolled around Aston Rowant nature reserve after finding the summit as I had new boots to break in. Another county top completed. | Buck | 29/09/2018 |
1st of 6 tops (5 tumps) today on Stage 6 of the Ridgeway with Lesley on a route from Watlington to Saunderton. Lesley waited on a concrete block while i headed up a track over the road and onto a woodland track to reach the summit area then did a circular to take in spot height and take another track round returning the same way. Lesley was ok because she was included in a film a guy was making about the Chiltern Hills. We headed over to Lewknor where I intended to carry on to Adwell Cop... | Dazingdale | 26/09/2018 |
With Jenx and Bryher to the same telegraph pole. Better light this time | nordicstar | 12/09/2018 |
From Cowleaze car park to one of the least memorable HuMPs around. Visited Shirburn Hill trig 730m to the SW for a bit of excitement... | Aye Jimmy | 09/09/2018 |

Stroll around the woods from the Cowleaze car park, frustratingly indistinct summit | mapple | 29/06/2017 |
Short wander from Cowleaze Wood car park. Views from the other side of the road. | squeegs | 01/04/2017 |
Parked in Cowleaze Wood carpark and took a circular walk through the woods to take in the HP. Firecrest and Red Kites seen. | JohRvs | 26/03/2017 |
walked from car park along the flat past the telegraph poles (which block gps on garmin) to the highest pole near end of track. Not exciting. | keithelliott | 23/03/2017 |
County top outing, travel to Cowleaze wood not far from Watlington turn left in the free car park and at the end of the track park the car near a clearing.Instead of following the path across the grass follow the wide track towards the telegraph pole which the high point is near. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 11/11/2016 |
A quick walk from the FC car park. Did the trig point to the S earlier in the year thinking it was the HP. | DanMaisieBex | 02/10/2016 |
From B4009 near Lewknor, up Hill road a stony track through woods to top. Followed path from nice green clearing to the telegraph pole, then to green for picnic, left my wife Nicola there to pdantically traipse round all high points, then we returned via Aston Rowant nature reserve path, after fruitless search for path to Beacon Hill to check out alt' summit. Someone has put a massive great motorway in the way!!! Had to go to Hughenden Manor NT place near Wycombe - part of the deal for going up a 'Hump', so will have to return another time for Beacon Hill! | pdantic | 24/09/2016 |
Lovely summer walk in the woods under blue skies, wandering around the top area. Glorious from the bridleway over the road. | edmundjohnson | 23/08/2016 |
Circular route 9.5 miles. | Graeme | 06/08/2016 |
Enroute to Farnborough air show. A straightforward wander around the woods..lots of Bear Ghrylls wannabes in these parts it seems.. visited TP too. | stig_nest | 15/07/2016 |
Pleasant wander through damp forest after a genteel day at Henley Regatta. Pity the trees mean there is no view. Red kites, chiff chaffs and great tits .Mainly beech but also oak and pine . Also did nearby trig. | Denise | 30/06/2016 |
Short walk from Cowleaze Wood car park. All very level, at path junction under power lines, no views. | RichardM | 30/06/2016 |

petey | 18/05/2016 | |
From the B 4009 near Lewknor at SU 71438 97323 - plenty of parking. Took lane SE past Hill Farm then track up to the plateau through Aston Rownant Nature Reserve. Then paths from car park through beech woods to flat summit area. Solo. Walk continued to Beacon Hill. | Man of Kernow1 | 06/03/2016 |
With Katy on way to London. Circuit on woodland paths. | George Thompson | 05/02/2016 |
Walked over from the car park. Great views, but not from near the summit. | r.ashwell | 31/01/2016 |
It would be easy to visit the summit without knowing and I probably did in 1999. Did it for sure today and recce'd new access areas since I walked a lot in this area. Two more visits in 2016 to the scarp slope looking for local moths that only use juniper. The conservation of juniper there, struggling in the wild in the S, is commendable, as some of the insects that use it are not found in the N. A walk on the scarp side (the wonderful Aston Rowant NNR) is also commendable, a much more aesthetic experience than wondering it a stump or a tangle of bramble might be higher than the recognised top in the dreary summit area. | pwheeler | 25/01/2016 |
As Gerry Bowes except I arrived by bike and being a Monday the area was deserted so mountain biking around the area was good as these are lovely woods | trimarc2 | 16/11/2015 |
Easy walk from car park with very little ascent | PeterD | 16/11/2015 |
From Cowlease Wood car park. Solo. | ADT | 25/10/2015 |

A sunny day - and was the wood busy... Charity Horse Rise, Local Photography Club, Assorted Walkers and Picnicking Families. Do visit other parts of the nature reserve - very special | M3WDD | 04/05/2015 |
A 5 hill category top. Pleasant flat woodland -simple loop on tracks from the large car park, a stones throw from the M40 which slices its way through the Chilterns known as The Stokenchurch Gap, or Aston Rowant Cutting or locally The Canyon. This is a steep chalk cutting, constructed during the early 1970s for the M40 motorway. It is 1,200 metres long and a maximum of 47 metres deep. The cutting is a SSSI of geological importance. Over 200 pairs of Red Kites can be seen in this area having been introduced in the Aston Rowant Nature Reserve and have bred successfully. | Chris Pearson | 25/04/2015 |
Gentle walk from car park. | Fred Windsor | 31/03/2015 |
7/10 Easily the most disapointing of the day. Ground beside car park | Fergalh | 07/03/2015 |

Four-in-a-day tour of Historic County Tops along the Chilterns scarp with Smoky and Ella. Dunstable Downs (Bedfordshire); Gadmore Lane beside Pavis Wood (Hertfordshire); near High Meadow Farm in Wendover Woods (Buckinghamshire); Cowleaze Wood by Bald Hill (Oxfordshire). None of these are distinct summits. | Skip | 11/05/2014 |
Cowleaze Wood car park at 727958 SE along avenue of trees for about 150m Turned right & SW to unmarked summit. Also visited the nearby trig point on Shirburn Hill, George Bridge's Oxfordshire historic county top. (S) | gerrybowes | 08/04/2014 |
first of 3 county tops today. Cold clear day, parked outside Lewknor and walked through Aston Rowant nature reserve. | callumorr | 01/02/2014 |
Easy and pleasant walk up along ancient, tree lined sunken trackway from Hill Farm through the Aston Rowant National Nature reserve. Returned from the flat summit in a loop down chalk grassland pasture. Excellent views over the Oxford valley. | VirtualMountain | 02/11/2013 |
Up in the rain with Tony. No real top or view, but the Chilterns in autumn are spectacular, with red kites everywhere. A decent burger and better pint at the Fox and Hounds, Christmas Common. | mcf | 01/11/2013 |
County top No.35. Train to High Wycombe then bus to Stokenchurch. A leisurely walk via Wallace Hill and Lower Vicar's Farm and Cowleaze Wood to bag the top, then down Bald Hill to the Icknield Way and on to Aston Hill Bottom for the bus back to High Wycombe and train home. Not easy to find the top approaching from the eastern (Stokenchurch) end of Cowleaze Wood; no clear path and I wandered around in the trees till I came on it quite by chance. A lovely sunny day: distance 4.6 miles, time 2:22, climb 653 feet, temp 22 deg C. | alan.65to70 | 06/08/2013 |
A short walk in snow. | bolton | 16/01/2013 |

Muddy forest car park. Along wet forest tracks to get GPS reading. No view - trees. 14.00 | arranc | 14/10/2012 |
After work, nr. dark. Hand torch and GPS phone, stumbled up damp track and near bumped into the telegraph pole, wandered down each ride tracking OS grid to be sure I got top. Don't believe the view any better by daylight!! | nordicstar | 10/10/2012 |
A short walk from the car park for this very unimpressive and disappointing HuMP and Couty Top; located in the middle of a wood so not even a view to be had. Nothing to mark the summit so no Grid Reference taken. | jonglew | 04/10/2012 |
Cycled here from Chesham. Would be cracking views from here if it wasn't for the trees... | Richard | 01/09/2012 |
Parked at nearby car park, bagged on our way down south with my better half. | Chingwakabungya | 26/05/2012 |

HuMP-bagging day trip to the Chilterns with Mark Jackson. Short walk along the track from the car park. Difficult to be sure exactly which is the highest ground. | davidpettit84 | 18/02/2012 |
Walked all around the quoted ref but not convinced as to where the actual top is 15:23 | chrisbien | 04/12/2011 |
Car park close to the top within Cowleaze Wood; an easy walk in the woods. Don\'t get confused by the trig point further south; it is lower. | AlexanderHoward | 26/11/2011 |
Got dropped of at hill farm and made a speedy ascent to the car park. Here I picked up my son and we were soon poking around near the telegraph pole to find the highest ground. | garyhoney | 10/09/2011 |
climbed on the way back from the game fair with Is | mr bounce | 23/07/2011 |
Park by the information board and path to the right of the parking spaces opposite (small path) leads pretty well directly to the 'official' summit. | simon and co | 29/06/2011 |
Nice walk thru forest area | BazWylie | 01/04/2011 |
VISITED WHILE RETURNING FROM CHILTERN KANTER. WANDERED AROUND THE WOODS. HIGHEST POINT APPEARS TO BE CLOSE TO ELECTRICITY PYLON. WEATER COLD AND DAMP. | BURGESS | 28/02/2011 |

East of car park (top end), at Cowleaze Wood. | Isambard | 10/08/2009 |
Had been to nearby Shirburn Hill many times for the great views without ever visiting this wood. The bluebells were wonderful and had a relaxing stroll before crossing the road and walking through Aston Rowant NNR to the bottom of the hill. | Herbert Anchovy | 23/04/2009 |
Not bald. Its in a forest - good paths and tracks. Couldn't find a statue - was a telegraph pole though. | destaylor | 02/03/2009 |
Large car park. Short walk to high probable or possible point i.e. track with power cables overhead. Shame sculptures have gone. Onward to trig and cache and rest of bagging activities. | Father Ted | 21/12/2008 |
had a quick walk through the woods and then down to
the trig just down the road. | asbown | 22/11/2008 |
2nd Top on w/end away. Parked in cp and mooched around large wood. Highest point? Thought either by concrete tower, on forest ride 250m away, or in amongst trees to NE. Rode on through Goring & enjoyed Regatta, sunshine and ice-cream more! | martin & storm | 19/07/2008 |
Beautiful bluebells growing in the woods. Top not obvious but had nice time strolling in peace. | Nick | 02/05/2008 |
Sculpture park is now closed due to withdrawal of funding. | clivevilla | 21/03/2008 |
Walked along Ridgeway from campsite at White Scar Farm and then up the hill. Spotted Red Kites. | Overthehilljill | 24/03/2007 |
Straightforward walk from car park after a nearby orienteering event. Suited me on the day but a pity that the summit is so easily accessed. | JohnW | 26/02/2007 |
Parked at the sculpture park and then made a shortish circular route taking in a section of the ridgeway. Fairly unremarkable top, lots of Red Kites on the nearby hillside. | rhalstead | 10/02/2007 |
Pile of logs in clearing with overhead power cables near the Chilterns Sculpture Trail. Nearby in wood is a mysterious "Darling, it's dark now" sign on a post! | signyred | 23/08/2006 |
just up road from a trigpoint | Rhayader_wander | 27/06/2005 |
Flat plateau summit - top could be anywhere. We took it to be at the most prominent object, a grey-and-yellow concrete arch at the end of the car park. Other sculptures not up to Grizedale Forest or Forest of Dean, but worth a wander. | wheresthepath | 25/09/2004 |
