Parked in place noted by many others. Took Macmillan Way to south-west but did not cross into golf course but stayed on concrete farm-track keeping water-course on right. At single conifer on left, crossed fields using field-margin to come back a few metres to high-point. Retraced steps. | Meanderer | 01/01/2024 |
As everyone else, good, solid parking just over the reservoir bridge. Almost directly opposite is a minor road giving access to the waterside cottages. Follow this unti you reach the terminal barrier then cut directly across the field to the obvious summit ridge. | moorsman | 19/01/2023 |
Virtual Blag | BrotherOzwin | 02/01/2023 |
Parked just over bridge as others. Followed tractor tracks around the field of spuds, then up bank to summit. | PGCE | 20/08/2022 |
Long cycle out across the fens into a head wind. Get as close as private property allows. The land here is all the same height anyway! | pclyndes | 21/06/2021 |
Parked just over bridge as others. Across field to what constitutes a HP in this area. On way back met farmer who was just coming out to shoot rabbits to stop them eating the sprouts just being planted in the field. | PeterD | 14/05/2021 |
Parked on the gravel area over the road bridge, walked past Iceni Cottages, then over the ditch and around the field. Long wet grass up to and on the summit. I didn't expect to find a top just above water level. Like others I experienced this as a very peaceful top. | edmundjohnson | 16/10/2020 |
with Caitlin on road trip | jthomson6nr9 | 02/08/2020 |
Visited on my own while on a hill bagging trip to Lincolnshire. | magirob | 09/09/2019 |
Parked along from Ship Inn. Pleasant stroll along River Welland. | callumorr | 30/05/2019 |
Parked in gravelled area immediately to SE of sluice over River Glen. Followed RoW SW until field appeared, the crossed it to bank. Up over bank and onto other side because the top was blocked by brambles, then along side of Vernatt's Drain SW until high point reached. Then back up onto bank. | Wheelsy | 26/04/2019 |
With E. Parked at The Ship Inn Surfleet and after a fish and chip lunch and a pint of Jack Rawlshaw Best Bitter we were ready to tackle this 8 metre high peak. Across road bridge by sluice gates then SE beside Blue Gowt Drain to lone tree and man-made birds nest built high on a pole. Direct E across ploughed field, keeping to tractor tracks, no crops. Scramble up bank to summit. Very peaceful. | Beeliner | 22/04/2019 |
From TF 2801 2925, good gravel parking area. Field margins to Vernatt's drain, then along SE side of the dyke (NW side of the drain). | jonglew | 03/04/2019 |
Small walk through beets ;) | Janko | 08/09/2018 |
This is so different. It barely rises above sea level. Remarkably peaceful.

Parked at the sluice cp and headed south and cut across ploughed field, over levee and along newly trimmed embankment. Came back along to the sluice gate but the embankment appears to have been privatised. | Campbell Singer | 16/03/2018 |
From parking at sluice gates. Field edge then along drain. Drain bank recently cut making life easier. | rhalstead | 20/01/2018 |
Good parking at Sluice Gates to corner of field, only short stubble now easy crossing to top. Back to ROW and down other side of river bank then to pub. | dgresty | 17/10/2017 |
Across a flowering potato field. | Dugswell2 | 06/07/2017 |
County top outing,I got to the grid reference which seems to be on the edge of a farmers field although higher ground may be found in a dense mound of brambles. I like county tops but not enough to pick a fight with a bramble bush the size of a garden shed! | WAYNE ROWLETT | 28/05/2017 |
With Coel. | Dangerous Dave | 20/11/2016 |
very brambly near official top in fields so went back to footpath on opposite bank (3metres higher but obviously man made).
Met one of the local boatmen (drainer) who found it hard to believe it was 8m above sea level ...his guess was2-3m max | keithelliott | 13/10/2016 |
Good parking to N, then used gerrybowes' approach route, thanks! Summit adorned with daffs at moment. | Aye Jimmy | 23/03/2016 |
3/9 Hill bagging day consisting of current and historical county tops (Staverton Clump/boring Filed/Haddenham Village/Pinchebeck Marsh/Beacon Hill/Wattisham Airfield/Great Wood/Bushey Heath/Hampstead Heath) | Fergalh | 13/02/2016 |
Came in from the car park to the north.walked down the footpath and across field.not really a top as I presume it is all man made | DARRENG | 22/09/2015 |
one of two lincs and a northampton | maltose | 16/08/2015 |
A tough hill this - only 8m high but the crop comes right up to the edge of the field - so I had to walk in the thistle/nettle/bramble filled field margin ditch. There is currently no path on the embankment and lots of unpleasant/impassible vegetation. From the summit I could see the tractor tracks and I was able to use these to return to my car without damage to crop (peas). | M3WDD | 03/07/2015 |
Growing peas this year. | andrew brown | 23/06/2015 |
As per previous summitters: from N, round W end of houses, followed field edge back NE, picked up good path to E side of embankment then good track beside river to summit. Oddly the OS 8m spot height on 1:10k seems currently to be another 200m further SE although the point in question is at normal ground level, 2m lower than the highest point. At first light Sun a.m. although a fair bit of dog walking activity on opposite bank, probably from the householders but if so no-one said anything. | RHW | 21/12/2014 |
from opposite bank, on the way home to sheffield | mr bounce | 28/09/2014 |
Interesting but was it worth a 60 mile detour? | Newton Maximus | 01/06/2014 |
It may be the lowest high points in the UK but was certainly one of the most difficult in terms of access.
Access via bank on west side of Vernatt's drain blocked by private residence at Vernatt's bridge, so viewed from east bank. Did access from west from farm track along Blue Gowt Drain, then followed tractor tracks across Cauliflower field. | mntainman | 08/04/2014 |
Walked around edge of field to the Welland then upstream to the obvious high point. | bolton | 28/01/2014 |
Parking area on south side of the sluice in Surfleet Seas End - WSW along lane for about 100m until end of row of houses - Dropped down into field and followed edge of field at the back of houses until reaching the embankment - Climbed up and over embankment - SSW alongside Vernatt's Drain for about 500m - Climbed up embankment and selected the highest of a number of small mounds. (PM) | gerrybowes | 28/01/2014 |
County top no.44. Train to Spalding (via Peterborough) and bus to Surfleet, then out and back walk via Surfleet Seas End and Vernatt's Bridge to the east bank of Vernatt's Drain. Based on previous entries I reckoned that the most interesting way of bagging this top was by viewing it from the Fenland footpath running down the narrow strip of land between the River Welland and Vernatt's Drain. A sunny autumn day (temp 16 deg C. Walked 6.0 miles; time 2:12; 118 feet. climb | alan.65to70 | 17/10/2013 |
After hockey match (estimated date) | garth87 | 21/09/2013 |
Lovely day for a long walk by the Glem and Welland rivers and associated fenland banks and fields. Lots of cabbages in the mud. Top is in on edge of riverbank in a field. Marie and Ben | mcf | 05/01/2013 |
Way up from @pboro to Lincoln. Quick bag in dusk, as per Signyred, to track and along to GPS grid Ref. Not obviously highpoint but collected. Nice pint in Ship Inn afterwards! | nordicstar | 20/12/2012 |
No access from north Private signs. Could follow field edge from 27968 29188. Bit messy and long grass. GPS gave field as -10m and top as -2m! Didn't much like the place. Easy parking. | destaylor | 15/11/2012 |
Nothing wrong with these odd 'tops'. They take you to places you would never bother with. Surfleet Seas End is well worth a wander around. | simon and co | 08/11/2011 |
Too much agriculture going on to trespass across the field. Stared wistfully at hump from footpath to the east. Quite frankly the high point could be anywhere. | Overthehilljill | 13/06/2011 |
I visited Hill Marsh Farm TF 26320 27615 (mound in cauliflower field) which has an 8m spot height on my 1996 LR131 and I believe was once regarded as the CoHP. Having got up to date on hill-bagging I guess I'd better visit this embkt sometime as it has a current 1:25k 8m spot height and seems fashionable nowadays ... | RHW | 05/12/2009 |
not the best top | johnfwoolley | 05/05/2009 |
On way to Kassel in Germany for son2 wedding. Hot day.Field planted to very edge various crops.Embankment v overgrown,nettles,brambles(nice),no path;so v scratched by top. Man made, so a JCB,a 10m pile,your own new co.top | martin & storm | 03/08/2008 |
field edge from houses. | asbown | 22/05/2008 |
Followed the route previously described and up onto the embankment. There is a little mound near given coordinates making it the country top. Big sky views. | Father Ted | 09/03/2008 |
Can't remember exact date | davefh | 01/01/2008 |
Go S past houses from TF279292 car park & round edge of crop fields to the near embankment as there's no access to this from the NE. Can't believe I struggled to reach this spot but the blackberries growing near made up for a soaking in a summer gale. | signyred | 13/08/2006 |
We found 3 places where the GPS showed 8m. (1) Mound at Spalding TF 26514 23872, (2)Surfleet Seas End (Reservoir Road) TF 27917 29338 & (3) Surfleet Seas End Dyke as per other entries. All rubbish tops. There's probably loads more - what a silly county! | wheresthepath | 23/07/2005 |
Hmm. Not very distinct. It could be anywhere. My view is that Lincolnshire is one county and therefore has one top (not this one!) | mikejacobs | 30/12/1996 |
Collecting flat county tops (from George Bridge's list) on way back to Sheffield after a week's climbing in Spain (Benidorm) with Julie. | Chris Pearson | 05/03/1995 |
