Parked north west from hill on B9134 on small layby. Followed weaselmasters walkreport from Walkhighlands (direct route through fields). Best staying right of the wall initially for easier fence crossing at the end | hummusg | 02/01/2024 |
Up from the farm to the west parking with permission
Trig S4480 | vegibagger | 11/06/2023 |
Parked at layby on bend 5187 5552. Walked along road to second road on left. Road not too busy. Up tarmac road to Back of Turin Hill. Farm track then Eastern edge of March Wood as trees down in wood. At SE end of wood through gate and up to summit. There are two stiles over the wall across the summit enabling access to the South side of the wall. | PeteF | 17/03/2023 |
As others, parked in layby on bend at NO 5187 5551 - SW along road for about 400m, turned left & along lane & farm tracks to N. edge of the neglected & overgrown March Wood - Turned left & along fence line to gate near top corner of wood & then a short climb to trig point & summit post. Also went over stile to memorial cairn. | gerrybowes | 20/09/2022 |
Similar route to Jossker and Summiter. We found a large passing place at NO 5227 5512 and walked from here past Fordmouth and headed up the hill. As on previous reports the track through March Wood is completely blocked by fallen trees and a wire has been put across the gate leading in. Easy gate to the east gives access to adjacent field up to vehicle track leading to wall near summit where handy stiles let you climb over the wall near the trig pillar and the memorial cairn. The true summit is easily bagged. | KevPalmer | 15/05/2022 |
Parked in small layby east of Woodside Farm. Headed for Fordmouth and up track at Back of Turin Hill. Track through Marchwood was blocked by fallen trees so walked up field on east side, through gate at top and out onto the open hill heading east to summit. Came back down through fields to the telephone exchange. Lots of electric fences, none were on. Lots of gates to climb over on way back. | Jossker | 22/01/2022 |
Parked in a two car lay-by on the minor road at 523552. Along road then track to Fordmouth and subsequent track SSW to the edge of a semi derelict woodland. Lots of fallen limbs so gate into adjacent field from here provides a better route. Once at a gate due west of the summit it is a pleasant walk along the ridge to the Jamieson memorial cairn, trig and top-proper. Headed back along the ridge eastwards, where it falls to some scrappy woodlands and cattle/sheep fields. The easiest route was across the fields until a gate besides a telephone exchange building on the road to Aberlemno. | summitter | 02/01/2022 |
Parked in layby at 518555. Up road a little way then left along yellow road around past Fordmouth to end of lane. Follow lane through a few gates, then when it meets the end of the small thin forest in what is effctively the last field, turn left and go through another gate into the adjacent field, then head diagonally up the field to the top left hand corner to meet another gate at the side of the wood. Go through this, then meet a large track, follow this for a little bit as it heads in the direction of the summit then cut up towards the trig. No electric fence climbing involved and only a little bit of mud on the track. | JulieB | 04/11/2021 |
Very kind, friendly resident allowed me to park in his yard NO 514547 - he appreciated me asking and not just abandoning my car on his mown grass verge just outside his entrance. To avoid electric fences - into field (turn right) at NO 5125 5413 and follow wood edge to spot height 216 and gate. Easy climb to top with stiles over summit wall. | carole engel | 10/05/2021 |
Parked at telephone exchange and walked up through fields (bull warning and electric fences). Returned same way. | SS | 28/09/2019 |
From road to north via Back of Turin Hill and March Wood. | Winterfloodian | 25/08/2019 |
Running from gravel layby to NW, near pictish stones, H waiting in car. Sunny, light breeze. In shorts – tough terrain. Got feet soaked, nettle stings, electric shocks and slurry. | Rounsfell | 23/08/2019 |
Nearest parking in layby at NO518555. Nasty walk on fast road can be reduced by using zig-zag farm track. Up green lane to NO512541, then track obliterated by brashings as the upper stand of trees was being felled by a machine weaving through (reminiscent of the Martian 'blood harvesting' machines in the re-make of War of the Worlds). Used gates to go up field edge on E side of stand. Judging by age of the summit wall, it is unlikely that the constructor(s) will be raising a libel suit any day soon, though they may be turning in their graves. | Isbjorn | 08/06/2019 |
Solo, jogged along and up from the pictish stones car park. | amswanston | 25/04/2019 |
Finding parking when there's a spinkling of snow is quite perplexing. After a comprehensive search, the best bet was opposite houses by the Wemyss Farm entrance, where there is a narrow parking place. Walked up the road past the farm and to Baldardo; this is a private road according to the signs. A good track continues to a gate by the woods. Over the gate, the track continues but is nasty, better to head right along the fence, hop the gate to the other side of the wall, and wander up to the summit. There are stiles over the wall near the top so you can walk down the other side of the wall. This approach gives the best side of the hill with nice views of the craggy summit on the way up. Nice hill but why has some dimwit built a wall right through the middle of the Pictish hill fort? | Gill | 18/01/2019 |
From Baldardo, by a good track to just below the North side of the summit ridge. Visited the trig point, summit fence post, memorial cairn and a mound between the cairn and the wall. Airy and extensive views. | Nick Down1 | 10/08/2018 |
1 of 2: From B9134 layby before Aberlemno. | ChrisR | 30/03/2018 |
Parked on the B road and cycled to the start. Went to the left of the wee forest to gain ground. | Play2End | 02/11/2017 |
Electric fences everywhere - from lay by on main road northeast of hill. I got a shock from one fence whilst trying to avoid cows. | Mark Sims | 20/04/2017 |
Short walk from Back of Turin north of the hill. Limited parking at tarred road end junction. Followed track to ridge then along wall to summit. Nice evening sunshine | N.Morters | 09/03/2017 |
Easy walk from the layby west of Aberlemno on the B9134. | martin_hall | 13/11/2016 |
Solo trip. Easy today from northeast, as no cows in fields I walked through. | Invicta14 | 03/11/2016 |
Parked on B9134 W of Aberlemno in parking spot and ascended via Fordmouth on track staying E of trees near top. | raffemeister | 16/09/2016 |
Very early morning jaunt from the lay-by on the B9134 near Aberlemno and straight up the track past the Back of Turin Hill. Very muddy near the end of the track but better once on the grass near the summit. Good views of Angus on a cloudy but clear morning. | Windy Corner | 31/07/2016 |
Public road to Baldardo where there is some parking and Pictish Fort sign then track almost to summit. | Chris Peart | 25/05/2016 |
With Jenx from parkibg spot at Turin Farm GR 514543. Up the track that gets increasingly muddy, deep around gates. Definitely a wellie job! Followed the woods keeping them to right. After last gate strike direct up hill for summit features. Many electric fences that can be svoided by gates described. | nordicstar | 02/12/2015 |
Some rather naughty cattle in the top field. I had to run all the way back to the gate at the bottom. | jenx | 02/12/2015 |
Weather fair | MountainMac | 30/10/2015 |
Parked in the hairpin bend @494523. Not on tar, they're picky about that, turning for artics required. Dry, sunny, calm, mild and good views if colourless. | iangalbraith | 04/10/2015 |
Parked just after leaving the B9134 near Fordmouth. Walked up the track then kept to the west of the woodland before heading east again towards the trrig, summit and cairn. | Dugswell2 | 23/07/2015 |
From road to the N. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/turin-hill-craigowl-kings-seat-and.html | Gayle | 24/05/2015 |
Parked at 513543 after asking permission from the farm. Followed the east side of the forest then east to the summit in under one hour return. Great views. With GM. | bolton | 10/04/2015 |
Asked the friendly farmer's wife where I could park at Fordmouth. Then simple and enjoyable pad SW up the obvious line, using gates to avoid the fearsome fence to the lovely little monument behind the trig. excellent viewpoint. NB if the ground hadn't been absolutely frozen solid, this is a hill which requires wellies, as there are lots of cattle. | Thearlaichdubh | 26/12/2014 |
from junction of roads on the B9134 near fordmouth tracks to open fields and summit. | robertphillips | 02/12/2014 |
parked at the north side, asked a friendly house owner where there it was ok to park for an hour. He offered a spot just in front of his house on the corner. You could go up the track a little further by car and park it at a field entrance a bit along. anyway track takes you to a point where you think left into the open field or shall I go through the gate on the left. take the left, keep close to the edge of the forest as the electric fence may be on and there is another gate at the end of the forest. keep walking up, you will see a dyke, there is a left turn, which you can take, than a trig-point is showing and there are two stiles to get to the top which has a cross on it. All in all took about 50 min. Behind the forest on the right there were seemingly some people and jeeps off road driving, it didn't interfere. | tallblond | 01/06/2014 |
Walked up the road/track from the N. Usual farmland hassles - electric/barbed wire fences avoidable by gate diversions, and cattle to keep clear of. | AndrewFinnimore | 27/05/2014 |
From NE and then up E ridge. Could not find path or signpost to "Pictish fort." | russell61 | 02/04/2013 |
Solo walk in very deep snow. | thenomad | 26/01/2013 |

Easy walk up lane from Turin Hill Farm near Fordmouth. | Aye Jimmy | 17/06/2011 |
Approached from telephone exchange. Quarry area required delicate negotiation of the electric fencing. Energetic bull on south side (memorial cairn) of wall, but stiles in place for a hasty retreat. | Smudge | 07/03/2010 |
Ascended from the north. | JohnW | 06/08/2009 |
Cairn on E side of wall/electric fence and trig point on W side seem to be about the same altitude.
Walker friendly track/path on E side signposted at various point to "Pictish Fort"
