1 x boggy parking at gate, SH397452. RoW is barricaded at SH397458 so kept on tx to Llethr-Ddu and up W side of property, then diagonal to a gate and up to a hurdle in top wall, into wind-stunted gorse, then steep grass with rocks and finally a really greasy awkward summit boulder field. Saw a para-wing launch from top so there must be a better way up than this. Not recommended | Isbjorn | 30/01/2024 |
Parked in narrow layby around 50m before start of path at red post box gate. Up track through boulders up between 2 X cottages, straight up through rusty gate behind cottage, straight up through stone gap, up, up to hole in stone wall, right turn, follow path across below rocky stuff all the way round between the two tops, then find a way to the top, very rocky and scrambly here so be careful, I wouldn't want to do it in the wet, back same way 2 hours | Tribal2er | 15/10/2023 |
Drove up from Llanaelhaearn, parked at track end GR397453. FP at bend in track goes left, not ahead, but leads to last farm. Gate into top field leads to open moor, then straight-ish up. Summit very bouldery, needs good balance. | IanHHill | 30/08/2023 |
Followed wall from Gyrn Goch. Had to climb over wall to get onto the hillside. Fragmented rocky ridge (not obvious on OS map) to summit. With Jill. | Dangerous Dave | 16/07/2023 |
Parked at Seaview Terrace and up the zigzags to the col. Took the 1st wall up -error - very rocky and steep. Crossed wall around the flatter area near the settlement marked on map. Found decent path that went up and across to a col. Surprised how rocky summit mound was and I had to take it carefully to avoid falling into what could have been a nasty hole or ten. Like coming off Tryfan. Returned the path way - much easier. Take the path up to Fron-huelog and then the gate thru there to avoid my horrible line of ascent. On to Yr Eifl after this - quite sunburnt by the end! | robphys | 29/05/2023 |
There is parking after about 500m on the left on the road east out of Llanaelhaearn (probably better than looking for passing places further up the road to park in).

Walked along the road to the ROW to Llethr-ddu (the gatepost is marked Ynys Ddu). Followed the ROWs to the access land by Fron-heulog. There is an old metal gate in the wall to gain the access land.

Tracks then lead to the rocky summit area. The rocks were not too bad as they were dry. Beautiful sunset over Yr Eifl. Returned the same way.

Up in 45 minutes; down in 30 minutes. | Clach Liath | 20/01/2023 |
easy park to east near mast started on row path not where map shows, stile over wall 100m west of summit of Bwlch Mawr then Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Coch return east using row some big stone walls however plenty of breaks no need to climb | underhill | 29/12/2022 |
From Trefor for a round of Gyrn Ddu, Bwlch Mawr and Yr Eifl. | rhalstead | 29/12/2022 |
The clag was right down when I approached , which meant that navigating back to the main east west path after scrambling back down the rocks was a bit dicey. Fortunately there was reception and OS maps on phone helped. Bet this is a great hill in good weather. | Mark Sims | 11/11/2022 |
From street parking in Clynnog Fawr using ROW to reach open hill side, after reaching Bwlch Mawr I crossed the stile near the summit and followed a path by the wall around the valley head not losing to much height all the way to Gyrn Ddu retracing my steps back to the start. Just under Seven mile in Four hours twenty. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 20/08/2022 |

I used the footpath on the right hand side coming from Llanaelhaearn. It went around the back of the hill, through fields and up a very steep hill to the summit. There's a few paths up but once you climb one of them you have access to all six hills in the vicinity, if you have time to do them all but I have to do two at a time. | Skarletk | 22/09/2021 |
From Trefor car park. Up zig zags then through iron gate in wall and mostly pathless route to top. Very cloudy / misty. No view at top. | Slash3 | 22/08/2021 |
From gate at 397452 by obvious paths to access land and then direct line up. Scramble at top. Excellent viewpoint. | Crib Goch | 29/07/2021 |
A circular walk visiting Gyrn Ddu, Gyrn Goch & Bwlch Mawr, from the small parking area at SH 397 452. Returning via the footpath to the south. A grand aerial view of the north coast. 12km with 550m ascent in 3h30m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 17/09/2020 |
From Cynnnog Fawr up very overgrown right of way to 417485, then edge of wood, crossing Afon Hen and straight onto Gryn Goch. Steep and deep gras with bilberries. Then on to rocky top of Gryn Ddu. Descended via right of way to mast east of Bwlch Mawr thsn roac: better than facing the vegetation again. Lovely views of Yr Eifl and Snowdonia. | Clive G | 21/07/2020 |
From south parked at track to Llethr-ddu. Path through fields then followed wall, final large boulders tricky to cross. 1/7 Marilyn | N.Morters | 17/07/2020 |

With Gareth from the Clynnog Fawr Road to the East of the hill. Gyrn Ddu first then Bwlch Mawr (and its handsome trig) on the way back. | briandavies | 19/03/2020 |
From Gyrn Goch (village) via Gyrn Goch (the hill). Rough all the way. | PeteN | 30/12/2019 |
From footpath (well, sort of) to south of mast on (very) minor road to east. Final section over boulders is unpleasant. | lenman | 05/09/2019 |
Parked at the end of the row of terraced houses parallel to the main road to the East. Waymarked path past Rock Cottage zigzags up to the Bwlch and beyond. Go past a couple of walls until past all the rocky ridge and then turn left opposite a building through an iron gate. Follow sheep track up to just below summit. Last 30m of ascent scrambly over rocks to reach the summit. Returned same route. | JulieB | 11/08/2019 |
From the entrance to Ynys Ddu farm found a footpath sign and stile then up by some broken down walls. Due to very limited visibility the boulder field came as a surprise. No views of course. | NormanW | 12/07/2019 |
1/3 Marilyn for the day. Gyrn Ddu from the south. 4km with 320m ascent in a round trip of 1h 15m. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 09/05/2019 |
From gate at 397452 by obvious paths to access land and then direct line up. Scramble at top. Excellent viewpoint. | trimarc2 | 10/10/2018 |
Snow down to sea level and minor roads impassable (yes, really, quite rare for the Lleyn), so the only possible starting point was Clynnog Fawr. The bridleway via Pen-yr-Allt-Uchaf would be pleasant in a drought; fortunately, the snow covered the swamp effectively on the way up. Not much path above the wall, and none at all crossing the Afon Hen, but the snow made light work of the bogs. Easier going with height, and knee deep snow towards the top. Generally, not as rough as expected, but very slow and tricky going up the summit boulder field, with many deep, snow covered holes to avoid. But all very spectacular, with splendid views. Thawing snow on the way down, once below 300 m, made for a trying descent, with several demonstrations of magnet arse. The vehicle track from the lower farm gave a drier route down. | Gill | 08/03/2018 |

Anticlockwise route over 5 tops of the group. A very fine summit. Very rough going. | stig_nest | 20/07/2017 |
Parked by the gate at SH397452 and walked tracks and rights of way to reach access land above Fron-heulog. Summit is a hill of large boulders needing scrambling to reach the cairn on the summit. Fantastic clear views over the Irish Sea from the top. Activated summit for SOTA on VHF with judy55cat. | G4OBK (Phil) | 15/06/2017 |
#628 Traverse from east over Bwlch Mawr | tim747 | 07/06/2017 |
With Trefor. Climbed Bwlch Mawr first from the aerial to the east then across moorland to Gyrn Ddu. Returned via public footpath to the south. Good weather and great views. | mike.hoult | 07/04/2017 |
Parked in the village of Llanhaerhaeren and then made my way up the tracks through the farms and onto the hill. The last part onto this peak is over boulders but there is no exposure, just need to watch your footing. Came down the way I went up over the boulders and then contoured around to Bwlch Mawr. | Father Ted | 09/10/2016 |
A difficult 3hrs walk with Christopher H in cloud over the 3 tops of the Gyrn Ddu group. Hard to tell from the map but the top 20-30m is a big mound of stones. Paths are in short supply. | Mark Jackson | 24/08/2016 |
Parked at end of farm track for Llethr-ddu then followed row to Fron-heulog. Straight ascent to Gryn Ddu with slippery boulder hopping at end. Descended east then north and up Gyrn Goch then back and round by walls to Bwlch Mawr (best 'stile' is 100m to west). Returned by row but diverted to take in Moel Bronmiod cutting down directly to Llthr-ddu on descent. | SS | 07/08/2016 |
Circuit including Bwlch Mawr and Gyrn Goch. Started at 438475, followed path W in thick mist. Unfortunately mist did not clear, so no views from summit. | JamesD1972 | 18/07/2016 |
A direct ascent from the mast at SH437478 bagging Bwlch Mawr,Gryn Ddu and Gyrn Goch. | mad max | 12/07/2016 |
After a long trek unable to climb the very slippery boulders to the summit. Beware can be dangerous when wet. | DDAY | 12/07/2016 |
Parked to west on A499, took path to the bwlch, then up the hill alongside the massive stone walls to the top. | Cas-gwent | 25/05/2016 |
