Substantial parking area at S cattle grid, SH860384 (I could not see anywhere to park, responsibly, at the N cattle grid SH856390). From the S cattle grid a fair, but thin, FP follows the W side of a fence and wall. At the wall corner, SH863388, braided FPs converge on a solitary fence post, up L, from where there is a steep direct thin FP on slippery heather roots and lichens to an initial cairn. Then good FP, later swampy and churned up by 2wheelers, to summit cairnIsbjorn06/02/2024
Ascent from the minor road beyond Arenig, up the track heading north to begin then striking up through bracken, bilberry and heather on vague path to the summit, showing fire damage from last year's moorland fire. return by same routeCumbriancyclist07/09/2023
from end of track between the cattle grids. Super views of the Arenigs and even Snowdon.IanHHill03/09/2023
Parked at parking area just west of easterly cattle grid SH861384. Up trod at west side of parking area to gate in fence, through gate then ATV track to fence corner at SH864389, through gate then choose your sheep track for the steep but short pull to the ridge from which it is a short walk to the smaller cairn and then the larger summit cairn.ColinW24/08/2023
Parked in the large parking area by the cattle grid. Walked back to junction of road and track. Here a fairly obvious path goes off through the bracken. It contours a bit towards the fence, then just before the fence doubles back going slightly up hill at first then turns more directly upwards. Followed this until quite high where it seemed to end, small bit of cross country through smaller bracken then path ip to fence. At fence corner a more obvious path goes along the ridge to the summit. Not 1/2 as bad as I was expecting from other reports. Just follow the obvious animal tracks. 2.1 miles. Up and down in under 1hr.JulieB13/06/2023
Started from the CP on SSW side next to the cattle grid. Climbed during late Spring, hence v little vegetation to worry about. Path easy to follow along RHS of fence, but thereafter no discernible path as such. Shortish climb is a little steep at times but always soft underfoot. Something of a plateau at the top with a few rocks strewn around – the summit is the third cairn you come across. Glorious views, dominated by both Arenigs and L Celyn down below Descended via N side which was tricky being overgown, tussocky and somewhat pitted underfoot. Best keep to the same fence as before. Skirted around the base back to starting point. Cuckoo heard all afternoon. Wonderful day in the sunshine!Swifty Morgan13/05/2023

Parked the car in the large area at the cattle grid and walked up the road to the track striking out for the summit after reaching the 400 meter bump on my left, Two and a quarter mile in just over an hour, after leaving the track it is a heather bash though.WAYNE ROWLETT01/10/2022
N up the track to W of summit then up the first fence line. Heather has been burned so relatively easy going.twg2724/06/2022
1 degree (3 later), no wind, cloud base 1100'. Via track to SW and intermittent path. Terrain not as tough as it looked at the start.Wycombe Wanderer24/01/2022
From small car park at cattle grid to SSW. Followed fence, then through knee high heather towards plateau, good path across top.CJM25/11/2021
Parking at eastern cattle grid. A faint path/trod up the fence line, then traverses left. Joins a sheep path which rises from the road to the Eastern summit cairn. A short walk across to the summit on a good path. Great views.Moorponder14/10/2021
Evening walk and 3/3 Ma for the day. Decided to ascend from dam car park to save driving round but ascent from NE not recommended- neck high bracken followed by knee high heather with no relent, legs shredded and ticks galore. Stunning views from the top though.steve_a03/08/2021
First of 7 neglected Ma on a last minute good weather forecast decision. As others, starting on the good track between the cattle grids on the Arenig road. From the summit of the track a worn trod went straight up the slope, I followed it and it worked ok, disappeared in a few places esp at the top. Visited main cairn and SE cairn where I thought I might find the trod. It was no help but gave some more time on the summit ridge, by far the best place on the hill. Suprb views of the nearby Arenigs. Thick vegetation, July isn't the best time to visit neglected hills... more to follow!pwheeler13/07/2021
Mid evening hike. pathless higher up with long heather. Short and steep. Great views from top.gettingonabit31/05/2021
3rd Marilyn of the day, easily up from cattle grid as others. Nearly fooled by the lower cairn, which has a prominent view of Arenig Fawr, but did visit the high point cairn too.NormanW24/05/2021
From old quarry parking up fence line and then slightly left to top. Descended by going south along summit a bit, no better than ascent.Flatfield11/05/2021
Parked off the road near cattle grid almost under power line SH856391. Heather bound on and off following the fence from 860394. Discovered on my way down the overall the south side of the fence is easiest with a patchy quad track and thinner heather. Operated for SOTA on top on VHF. Great to have managed 3 Marilyns in a day and still be able to drive 400 miles after undergoing minor heart surgery!G4OBK (Phil)25/04/2021
From cattle grid layby to SSW, after sleeping there. Start of a hot, sunny day. Off to Allt y Main after. Rounsfell19/04/2021
From SH 859 388 (roadside parking on grass) along cart track towards disused tips, then picked up narrow sheep trods through the bracken, to the ridge just south of the summit. Not much heather until near the top. Good views. 2.4km with 190m ascent in a round trip of 50 minutes. (S)silveracorn_alan22/09/2020
from cattle grid followed fence line passing lonesome pine small trodunderhill04/09/2020
With Rufus starting in large lay-by to S close to cattle grid. Followed Gill’s directions to the old fence posts then a mixture of bracken, heather, gorse & bilberry to the plateau. Great view from the top with an odd view of Crib Goch & Crib y Ddysgl peaking around Arenig Fach. Easily under 1 hour round trip.jacobrichmond20/07/2020
From west, at first cattle grid. Took track under pylon and path to meet fence. Faint path continues along fence line past a couple of pine trees...mostly clear of heather. 3/3 quick 40min round trip.N.Morters23/12/2019

Not to be forgotten in a hurry. Bashed up through heather and bracken beside fence. Hot and challenging. Walked over to other cairn to try and find easier path down - not to be. Tough but good views.elizyanne29/07/2019

From parking to S near cattle grid.ger24/02/2019
Parked in big lay-by to south. Quick stroll up. Clear blue sky, a good view from summit. 40 mins in total. Company: Soloiandesbottes22/02/2019
From old quarry to the south. Straightforward although there is some heather bashing. Good viewpoint. With TJB.trimarc220/02/2019
A Marilyn day on the Arenigs, visiting Moel Lechwedd, Arenig Fawr, Arenig Fawr South Top, Arenig Fawr South Ridge Top, Moel Llyfnant, before going on to climb Arenig Fach and then Mynydd Nodal. Over 20km in 7h30m. (S)silveracorn_alan24/09/2018
With AndyB, ScottB, JackW, RobN, TimM, ChrisD. StagDo. Did not summit.masmith03/06/2018
A nice sunny evening, easy thanks to Gill's directions around the steep heather.Topographer5705/05/2018
Thank you Gill, your directions worked perfectly.Lionel Bidwell29/03/2018
With: hb; Parked just west of cattle grid at SH861384. Up grassy bank and followed W side of fence to small gate. Through this then followed path on E side of fence to the gate in the wall. Over this then up the heather past the ruined fence to the ridge (Gill's description is perfect) and then along this to cairn. From here follow the good path to the summit. Excellent views to E side of Arenig Fawr and across Llyn Celyn to Arenig Fach. Returned by same route.Ian Baines16/03/2018

From the parking area by the cattle grid (seems to be a target for thieves, judging by broken glass). Up the grassy bank, head right to the small gate, through it, then up a track on the E side of the wall, which becomes a good narrow grassy path to the wall corner. Hop over the gate and head for a wooden post below a grassy area. Up the grass, head right to another patch of grass, up this, then follow a mossy runnel. When this runs out, there's only a little bit of steep, long heather left to climb to the ruined fence above. After that, the heather is much shorter and easier. There's a path once you get close to the first cairn, continuing to the summit. Good views. Very easy descending the steep heather at first, but gets rough once level with the higher grassy patch, so divert back to the grass.Gill09/03/2018

From car park 100m west of cattle grid. Go another 100m west on road, where a track heads uphill to the pylon, and continues up parallel with the fence to it's corner. After this you're on your own in the heather and bilberry delight.Minto12/06/2017
Same route as everyone from road south, I hadn't read logs on here before so wasn't expecting the good little trail to just disappear without a trace halfway up, annoyingly found another trail to summit when on top but following it down went in the wrong direction, the rain chased us off the summit. This was our last (9th) hill of the day after an 11.2 mile walk bagging Yr Arddu, Moel Meirch, Ysgafell Wen North Top, Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman, Allt-Fawr, Iwerddon and Moel Dyrnogydd in nicer weather.DanTrig07/06/2017
Started from parking space close to cattle grid and 371 spot height. Room for three or four cars. Walked up for a few metres on west side of fence to a gate. Through gate and followed a good path to a right angle corner in a fence. Climbed gate. Generally followed fence but moved to right. Path vague and tenuous until it finally died out. Crossed to left to a cairn through heather and bilberry. Not too bad. Cairn was not the top. The top is a further 280 metres to north but there is a good path all the way. Reversed to where a cross fence comes up from the NW. Followed this down on a vague sheep trod? and then gradually moved to left until met a good track. Followed track back to road and road to car. Nice walk bar the heather and that wasn't too bad. Views from top very good.MikeM18/05/2017
With Trefor. Parked to the SW and straight up to summit.mike.hoult29/11/2016
From parking space SSW. Good track NW side fence line for half the distance, then good luck after that. Although I did find the faint track all the way down.jonglew04/11/2016
As others from parking spot at SH 86106 38449 near cattle grid. Fairly decent path beside wall but when the wall turns right at SH 86361 38858 the path goes with it! We followed the path for a couple of hundred metres looking for an easier way up but there isn't one so we just aimed directly for summit. Deep, wet heather and steep slopes not pleasant!David Gradwell20/08/2016
Parked at Cattle Grid at 371m spot height south of Mynydd Nodol SH 86120 38393. Straight up and down fence to summit. Reasonable path to follow at bottom and near top making a guest appearance in other places, not necessarily on the steeper bits. Rest of it is a trudge through knee deep heather and some gorse. Length of fern depends on time of year.mntainman19/06/2016
As others from cattle grid through enclosed field. Then followed old fence line. Path? on the steep bit would have helped if I could have found it. Just had to make way best I could till found it again on the top.Never mind, fantastic views lovely blue sky day.Rob5030/05/2016
Parked by the track after the cattle grid, and bashed up through the heather. 30 mins up and down, but pretty hard going. Lots of insects flying about too. Great views of Arenig on top though.huwthomas30/08/2015
From cattle grid to SW as per most others. Narrow paths alongside low wall with fence on top to the corner, then pathless heather. Headed for the fence posts thinking there might be some sort of path but none found, so just hard heather until near the top. Better option is to keep heading straight up in line with the wall/fence aiming for a low rock outcrop. At the top of this is a cairn from which a good path leads to the summit. This minimises pathless heather walking.ijpowell02/05/2015
With Cabe up a load of crappy heather. Rubbish.simon and co07/04/2015
With Jenx from cattle grid. New fence put in, follow this and enter enclosed field through gate. Better path up to second gate in top left corner, not seen from below. Gives access to rough path leading up to old fence posts on skyline. Easy stroll from there to summit cairn.nordicstar03/04/2015
