Over the fence onto awful tussocky ground and deep heather for a quick bag. Solo.Dangerous Dave07/02/2024
First top on a solo 15 mile walk from New Radnor to Kington via Radnor Forest, in glorious autumn weather. Approached using the Ystol Bach bridleway, then the track to Black Mixen. Access is okay despite the signs, no firing today, but the heather is awful to cross. Made it as near to the top as I could be bothered, then back the same way. This is really just a little itch scratched, the worst summit on this lovely range. Onwards to Black Mixen.thesweetcheat08/10/2022
Pretty sure I've been to this top before. Anyway, done it now.Dusty07/09/2022
As clivevilla: Parked in forest car park at end of minor road north from New Radnor at 205618. Followed clear path round the edge of the forest above a deep valley (danger area) then turned left and left again to summit which is in fairly thick pathless heather. Summit is now in a Danger Area, but no activity when I was there on a Sunday afternoon.PGCE27/03/2022
My last Welsh Buxton Lewis. As rough going as everyone says!BaggerGutt05/03/2022
This summit's a nightmare! It's covered in tufts of heather and overgrowth that completely hide the ground so it's impossible to know how far down each step's going to go. It's ankle-breaking terrain, slow, hard work, and to be honest, not worth it. The other peaks are great, bag them instead!SootAndShale25/04/2021

4/8 A splendid round trip of the Great Rhos to bag 3 Deweys. From New Radnor up bridleway, with quick hop over the fence (SO 214 619) and up the field to Knowle Hill, back down and up FP through wood to barns, then direct up to the Whimble (splendid summit), back down and revisited Bache Hill and the transmitter at Black Mixen, visiting the deleted Nuttall, Great Creigau, en route. Then a significant descent to bag my second Dewey, Fron-wen (disappointing - just a rise in a forest road) and on to revisit Marilyn Great Rhos, before a long trek over wild moors to my final Dewey, Nyth-grug, and a lengthy road walk back to New Radnor. All in all a great walk with good views. 25km with 900m ascent in 7 hours. (S)silveracorn_alan24/07/2020

A pig of a top to get to. Holey heathery and indistinct.stig_nest24/09/2018
Knowle Hill - Whimble - Bache Hill - Great Creigiau - Black Mixen - Great Rhos. Basically the Nuttalls route with occasional diversions to take in the three bonus summits. Mainly cloudy and breezy but dry. Fortunately it's not far from the gate in the fence line to the summit of Great Creigiau as it's not good walking.Herbert Anchovy29/07/2017

From New Radnor on a reverse direction of Nuttall's 11.4 walk. Took in 6 hills, this being the third.jonglew16/06/2016

Forest car park above New Radnor at 205618 – N. up bridleway alongside forest & E. side of Ystol Bach Brook to metal gate below col – Made way up to col & then through heather & tussock grass to unmarked summit. Plenty of cowberries growing on the summit. (S)gerrybowes28/09/2015
Only a 200 metre detour from the path to Black Mixen, but an absolute horror. Heather, and bog with hidden water filled holes - take it slowly and carefully. Plus point was profusion of large ripe bilberries!Crib Goch12/08/2015

A short, but annoying, detour on way from Black Mixen to Bache Hill. Have to climb a fence and wade though thick heather, with no sign of path, to a flat and uninteresting top. If it hadn't been a hill on this site I wouldn't have bothered! At least virtually no ascent required. Definitely would never do it again.Hillsidenick07/08/2013
Rough trek through deep heather.bolton25/07/2012
Third of an anticlockwise circuit from New Radnor and a deviation from the route to Black Mixen. Horrible lumpy heather and hard work for little reward.milimana25/02/2012

Bagged with Sarah. Cracking views of the scarred hillside surrounding the path, due to the ammunition testing. Nice weather and good paths early on.wee mac30/03/2008

A quick hop over the fence and within a few minutes this top was reached.garyhoney16/02/2002
Start ~ 213607, New Radnor. Took the track by Haines Mill and then climbed up on to the fell above the Three Riggles. Contined over pathless heather until we found the trigg point of Great Rhos. Then took track into woods and swung E to pass the head of Harley Dingle to emerge onto a path to Black Mixen. Continued to Great Creigiau and Bache Hill before following a track down through the woods to return to New Radnor. With Chris Wilkes.steve hudson10/01/1996
