From Wasdale Head, we walked up Mosedale and ascended the path to the top of Black Sail Pass. In poor visibility Pillar has a lot of false summits and we crossed them all. Scramble down Dore Head, then did the round of Red Pike, Scoat Fell, a detour up to Steeple, then back round to Pillar, before a gentle stroll down to the wadale Head Inn for a pint! Starting from Bowness Knott, I took the long route up Pillar but was surprised by the time it took. Having walked the length of Ennerdale Water and crossed the River Liza, I walked on its south bank before turning steeply uphill and taking longer than expected to emerge from the woods. I crossed High Beck as it became a stream, but never found a path from this point and struggled up the steep stony hillside to Wind Gap. It was an easy stroll to the summit of Pillar on a fine, cloudless day, but it had taken about three and a half hours since I set out.peter4lc15/09/2011

From Red Pike followed path around the top of Black Comb down to Wind Gap and a steep climb to top, virtually flat for 50 yards all round and a little disappointing. Pillar rock 400' below and magnificent views across the valley and to Great Gable. To Shamrock Traverse and Robinson's Cairn. Track down to tree line onto forest road and 5 miles back to car in teeming rain. 3980'; 15 1/4 hours.arranc02/06/1968
