Parked at reservoir car park Tramp up via Upper Menherion Farm. Ascent via east side, descent via north side where we met some friendly cows. | harrytww | 07/04/2024 |
SOTA | mike.hartley | 23/02/2024 |
Parked in gateway of Calvadnack Farm. This though only possible as second driver stayed in case needed to move it. Footpath NE through fields to open access land marked as giants grave. Go to top right hand corner of field to enter access land at best spot as fairly boggy behind wall. Wide uninterupted view looking westwards. | Pete West | 19/02/2024 |
From the lay-by and along the lane signed Polgear Beacon. Past the rusting Sierra and through the open gate. Our route to the right took us past piles of rubbish and rubble but then the approach was very wet and the gorse probably impenetrable in the summer. | Newton Maximus | 06/02/2024 |
Parked at the Stithians Reservoir Adventure Centre (£2.50/2 hours). Walked up the SW/W/S running fence line on the access land from the fp heading SE from Upper Menherion Farm. Faint path but gorsey/brambley and hard work initially. Descended N into pasture and cows before climbing a gate onto the bw. The fp from Little Polegear doesn't seem to exist on the ground, at least in the pasture/access land. With Gillian. | richard69 | 28/08/2023 |
Parked in the layby at Penhalveor. Took ROW to Upper Menherion Farm. East along track to gate into access land then easy up to summit. From summit towards masts fence is broken so went over fence and down track to ROW below Channel View Farm. Followed ROWs back SE then N to Upper Menherion Farm and back to car. Last section 40 Marilyn. | JulieB | 26/02/2023 |
From Yellow-wort, where I got into conversation with an old boy. He was proud of the hill, making me aware that it was special, being the highest mountain in Cornwall and a Marilyn to boot. Pretty straightforward ascent via ROW then vehicle track to just SE of the summit. around a wire security fence then to the Trig. | summitter | 17/01/2023 |
From lay-by N of Phillpots Farm. Up track to access land. Plenty cattle, all very placid. Up thro gorse, brambles, heather and bracken to slabs just N of trig point where fence is damaged. | CJM | 30/06/2022 |
From layby near Philpotts Farm. Access to and is from far side. Walked via paths to far side until the barb wire ceased along with the private land signs. Tracks up to trig. Returned same way. About an hour. | Longwojo | 25/05/2022 |
While staying at Trellissick. Parked at the large layby by Philpott's Farm, down the road, through the gate, cows inquisitive by harmless, paths appear through the latchen, easily to the top. No interference by locals | climbingkershaw | 07/04/2022 |
Good views in the sun. Gorse precludes running up... | davechaffey | 16/03/2022 |
Out of Redruth - Carn Brea - Penventon Hill - Carnmenellis | PhilipChaston | 05/02/2022 |
Redruth station - Carn Brea - Penventon Hill - Hangman's Barrow - Carnmenellis - Carn Marth - Redruth. | Mark Jackson | 24/01/2022 |
Same route as Idris, with Jamie and Charlotte. Met the farmer on the way down - she was friendly but informed me that there was no public access that way. I asked how to get to the top and she said there was a public footpath on the E side (which there is, though it doesn't seem to go to the top). | paulhilder | 23/01/2022 |
Same as Idris. Best to do this route in winter when no cows in field and gate is left open. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 11/01/2022 |
As with others Parked in llay-by near Phillpots farm and walked up lane signed Polgear Beacon then up track to gate which was open. Through gap in fence by the large slabs near the summit. | Idris | 16/12/2021 |
Parked in lay-by near Phillpots farm and walked along road then up lane signed Polgear Beacon. Before the house we turned to the left up track to gate which has signs saying no public access and beware of cattle. We completely ignored these signs as it is access land and walked through the herd of non-scary cattle following easy tracks up by fence missing most of the gorse and bog to trig on summit. There is a one strand barbed wire fence before trig but if you walk just past the trig into a rocky outcrop the barb wire is gone. Returned the same way. Foggy with limited views. Later that day we bagged Carn Brea and St Agnes Beacon. | DanTrig | 17/10/2021 |

Trig is on open access land, however the approach is not. Spent a while driving round the block in the rain looking for a parking space as I'd read a number of GOML logs for this. Ended up at Stithians reservior and walked back along the road to the PROW. I then followed the PROW and once the mast was in sight headed more or less for the mast. Tough wet, holey, jaggy ground, I was soaked. On the way back I found a 'path' down to the ruined cottage with the caravan which met up with a path that led back to the PROW. A much better route. Treated my self to a Wild Vibes Cafe Special at Stithians, recommend it, soup of the day and 1/2 a sarnie, yummy and really warmed me up! | thejackrustles | 21/06/2021 |
From the lay-by near the bend in the road to the W others have used. Short and quick; with K. | IanHHill | 18/04/2021 |
with Evelyn | jd16 | 29/12/2020 |
Solo during a week in Cornwall. An early morning ascent via the Polgear Beacon path mentioned by others. Followed the boundary fence to the summit with no BWF, bracken, gorse or bramble issues. Scruffy sort of hill - constantly felt that I was being watched although sign of anybody else. | NotReallyABagger | 29/09/2020 |
3/4 Marilyn for the day in Cornwall. Carmenellis from the west. Low mist throughout, wet. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 01/11/2019 |
Same route in as Norman which does not seem to have the GOML issues the other route has. Even exchanged waves with a JCB worker after turning up onto the hillside then straight up to the trig. | Father Ted | 04/05/2019 |
As other from the large lay-by near the sharp bend into Carnmenellis. As others Polgear Beacon track then following barb wire fence between gorse to top. 4/5 Marilyn | N.Morters | 28/04/2019 |
From the big layby to the SW then up the road Polgear Beacon. Over some rough ground and duck under a single strand bwf. | NormanW | 30/03/2019 |
Approached over access land from (a little south of) west. Which was as unpleasant as other folk below say it is. | lenman | 03/01/2019 |
Just possible to park very carefully at beginning of track to the West, SW 690364. A bit of a path is starting to form in the low level gorse, close to the BWF. No need to tackle any BWF - there is a clear passage between the big rocks at the top corner of the meeting BWFs. | Isbjorn | 03/11/2018 |
From corner of road to the west via public footpath and access land. Once through gate turn right as far as the wall. Follow traces of path through gorse alongside wall. Near the top duck under single stand barbed wire to access trig point.
Gorse not a major problem. | Winterfloodian | 19/09/2018 |
2nd Marilyn of Cornwall hols, from road bend/track to W as prev described. Good views towards coast although legs scratched to bits from gorse. Shorts not recommended!! | steve_a | 25/08/2018 |
From the west, short track from the road bend then east up the heath, and, higher up, some rather uncomfortable gorse. | Topographer57 | 09/08/2018 |
Parked in lay by to west then walked round bends in road to track with sign for Polgear Beacon. along ROW past house then up left hand of wall to trig. with elizyanne. wet and overcast | GmacT | 04/07/2018 |
No view - could have been anywhere! :( | elizyanne | 04/07/2018 |
easy enough from right angle on road. followed cattle tracks to summit pillar. certainly easier than Trink Hill. Soaking wet legs from vegetation. | cjo | 20/06/2018 |
second attempt after walking up the hill to tv mast and only later realising I had the wrong hill.
Equally hard work scrambling through gorse from the West side. There must be an easier way! | gettingonabit | 18/05/2018 |
Bridle way to Polgear, up past old car and found tracks through gorse to trig. | PeterD | 23/04/2018 |
As with others, parked at layby at 687364, then short walk along road to a track titled Polgear Beacon. Follow the track through open gate (with abandoned car) onto the moor. Increasing quantity of gorse and briars made progress tricky - I ended up carrying my puppy! Ended up following close to wall topped with barbed wire. Gap in wall gives access to trig point alongside transmitter mast. Sunny with good visibility. With Sue and Nutmeg. | Dartmoorman | 20/04/2018 |
From layby up through small tip and up by fence/gorse. Bit wet underfoot but at least gorse was still recovering from winter. | SS | 13/04/2018 |
A scruffy sort of hill. I took the bridleway from Polgear Farm, and continued all the way to the gate onto the moor. Short cuts not possible due to people in the fields. Various tracks through the bogs made easy going up to the tors, then hopped the wall for a nasty knee deep wade through gorse and heather. Paths are visible on the way down. | Gill | 25/01/2018 |
Parked in lay by to west then walked round bends in road to track with sign for Polgear Beacon. After reaching scruffy area I worked my way through rough stuff to find a bit of a path following a fence to the top- couldn't even see the mast mind as the clag was down. | Mark Sims | 22/12/2017 |
7/8M parked in layby road, track, then up through gorse brambles to the top. | robertphillips | 07/11/2017 |
I managed to lose a pair of expensive glasses on this hill. If anybody finds them, please get in touch | bwm | 31/08/2017 |
Both of us | Tonyandsue | 12/04/2017 |
From layby, track past Sierra to access land. | rhalstead | 04/03/2017 |
Parked in layby 687 364. Took farm track towards Polgear Beacon. Tricky walk over brambles and gorse bush as no clear path once you leave farm track. Jeans / long trousers necessary. | Hippy77 | 05/11/2016 |
TD, C & H. | This Dog | 22/10/2016 |
Parked in the lay-by, up Polgear Beacon track through gate detoured around cattle through gorse to trig point. In mist, a not very nice hill on a not very nice day. | rogreeves | 27/09/2016 |
As G Bowers. No issues except the gorse. | mart0797 | 22/09/2016 |
Access issues described below are all true, very little evidence of ROWs shown on map. Was very glad to be wearing jeans when pushing across access land. Is a nice hill if you sit with your back to the antenna compound and look out to the N and W. | Danmawr | 29/07/2016 |
Walk up from the Polgear Beacon track. This place was a right mess visited the trig and headed back the way I came. The Slag heap above Hensbarrow was far more preferable. | isabelle | 06/04/2016 |
Solo. From Parked in lay-by to the west. Track signed Polgear beacon then headed straight for TP on faint path through gorse. No problems. Drizzle. | mike.hoult | 04/04/2016 |
