From the parking area near the church in Llanymmawddwy, a straight up and down the steep ridge, taking an Hour and Three quarters for the Two mile round trip. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 12/08/2023 |
Up and down from the chapel like others. Excellent views from the top today, and chapel open for viewing. | Moorponder | 04/07/2023 |
From Llanymawddwy via E. ridge as others. The trod was very slithery after a very rainy 12h. As some others, we were quite surprised this classic way up a hill was not more popular- we didn't see anyone tackling it this afternoon or tomorrow. With brother, Pete. | pwheeler | 30/04/2023 |
Parked in Llanymawddwy by the phone box. Usual route steeply up the east ridge via the waterworks. Back the same way. A fine and sunny morning on Pen Foel-y-ffridd. 3.5km with 380m ascent, taking me 1.5 hours there and back. | silveracorn_alan | 11/04/2023 |
From the car park in Llanymawddwy past the chapel on ROW to watwerwork, took the E ridge to the summit. Continued to Aran Fawddwy via the top of Rhaeadr Gwyn. Returned via Gwaen Lydan | Wyn | 07/04/2023 |
As others: parked by phone box. Up the E ridge. Nice hill. | PGCE | 04/02/2022 |
Sat in the car for an hour at Bwlch y Groes but by 11am it was obvious that the blanket cloud at 2000' wasn't shifting and I didn't fancy the Aran Fawddwy hills in mist for a third time so I looked for something else to do and spotted this gem on the map. I was feeling tired anyway after a restless night and twelve consecutive days walking so it worked out perfectly. Fantastic view of Pen Foel-y-ffridd as I drove down from the bwlch and all the hills this side cloud-free. 5 degrees, calm. Tourist route. | Wycombe Wanderer | 23/01/2022 |
Gorgeous clear sunny frosty day with swirling mist and brockenspectres. Very steep ascent from village via reservoir- small car park by chapel and phone box by path junction . Steep grass and dead Bracken on ridge. Grassy knoll on top. Continued to waterfall and the down valley. Excellent route. Flush bracket on church. | Denise | 13/01/2022 |
Good parking in Llanymawddwy. Up the very enjoyable E ridge in superb weather of valley mists, bright sunshine, brocken spectres and stunningly clear views.
We make a circuit of it continuing NW around the top of the valley and descending beside Pistyll Gwyn and the valley path back - recommended. Flush bracket with destroyed cut mark below on the church an added bonus. | RichardM | 13/01/2022 |

Parked opposite the chapel in Llanymawddwy. Followed PROW to left of chapel up to the water authority building. Turned to left up the start of the ridge. Path is a series of steps, some steep and eventually parallels a fence. The slope eases at the top of the last step and the fence is crossed where it starts to turn to the north. Vague track followed to summit which forms part of a short level ridge running to the south west. Return is the same although dropped of the path before the water works building and picked up the track to the village. | MikeM | 24/05/2017 |
Stunner of a hill but an absolutely punishing ascent at 8 in the evening after having already been up Aran Fawddwy, Esgeiriau Gwynion and all the other tops along the way | Alex C | 20/04/2017 |
Parking area next to phone box in Llanymawddwy at 903190 (Space for 4-5 cars) - Crossed road to chapel & then RoW to Welsh Water building on corner - Narrow path, faint in places, up ridge to unmarked summit. (S) | gerrybowes | 04/03/2017 |
So here it is. My last top in 30E. I first saw Pen Foel y Ffridd as much as 26 years ago and ever since have thought it looked a steep brute. Now I know it is. Up from Llanymawddwy as far as the resr and then up through dying bracken and then steeply up through heather, bare rock and rough grass. Its a relief when it levels off. The summit is a grassy rib, unmarked top. Headed off towards the waterfalls to find a quiet spot to spend the rest of the afternoon. A very very fine hill. | stig_nest | 14/10/2016 |
Steep. Direct. Fine hill | RobertP | 10/05/2015 |
Same way as everyone else. Amazed that there isn't a path up such a conspicuous hill. | Colin Crawford | 11/03/2015 |
As arranc and others - a terrific hill. | Chris Peart | 22/10/2014 |
From parking place at SH 90284 19004 at Llanymawddwy. Took ROW to SH 90259 19319 and then up the ridge. | Alan Moore | 16/08/2014 |
From the car park by the tel box/ chapel in Llanymawddwy cross the road and up very steeply on a concrete and later bridal lane to the water work building and follow the east ridge to the top. You can use the fence posts to haul you up the slopes and your backside to slow you down on the descent! | arranc | 10/04/2014 |
Last Welsh Hump. | andrew brown | 03/03/2013 |
Parked by church and went up the east ridge. A steep pull of 1200ft all the way to a heathery top. Good view of the waterfall. | DARRENG | 07/04/2012 |
As SH. Great hidden little gem. Fence a great help on way up and down. | destaylor | 30/11/2011 |
Climbed via Cwm Pumryd and Gwaun Lydan. | Man of Kernow1 | 12/09/2010 |
Start~ 903190. Followed RoW to NE ridge and followed this to the the summit. Cracking little peaky hill. | steve hudson | 26/04/2010 |
Parked in village at GR 903190. Track climbs very steeply from road round side of chapel and continues very steeply up ridge all the way to a peaky summit. Good views all round. With SH/RO. | wombourne | 26/04/2010 |

A hot day in February. 1st top of a superb 5 hour bagging run in shorts around Cwm Cywarch horseshoe of peaks (superb long steep slopes plummet down from the corrie edge). With Rob Small and John Mawr (w/e staying at Corris YH) doing Deweys and previously missed Nuttalls which were not published when I was doing the Bridges here. Up from the west on an excellent slanting path -pushing hard - ran all way up from valley. | Chris Pearson | 15/02/1998 |
