Pretty much Chris B’s route except parked at big lay-by at bend over river a bit further on. Used footpath shown as straight line. Easy up the hill on quad track to left of marked path. Veered off to gate in wall and then followed wall. Just a wire fence to cross. Easy. With B.jenx23/10/2023
Good parking at start of track to Shieldhill. Up track to a little before the hut. Take the grassy track heading up. It takes you to the top via one gate.chrisbien25/11/2022
Flinty Fell and Middle Fell from Nenthead. Climbed from road summit, some awkward fences/walls and a lot of long grass (luckily dry from the current hot spell). Descended to GalligillGary Heath14/08/2022
Deceptive. Large parking on bend at NY750424. Stile, early, steeply up L, is easily missed, but gives a foretaste of what is to come. No ground trail to first waymarker which is invisible until you’re at it, will get worse as new plantings grow. Next waymarker at building. Then no ground trail until 3rd waymaker, way up the hillside, again not clear until you are at it. Follow wall around through veritable forest of 5 ft thistles. Wall, topped with BWF to negotiate to reach trig – easier if follow BWF NE to its end (just enough through-stanes protruding for boot toes).Isbjorn12/08/2022
From road summit to SE, after Flinty Fell. Gate into pasture, awkward crossing of 4 way wall junction (avoidable if we'd spotted second gate) then mostly following walls. Tussocky terrain and slow going. Return to Nenthead by ROW, well signed but little used.milimana07/05/2022
Footpath from S then open ground to summit on bright frosty morningRobertP09/04/2022
Past on my way to the trig point. A couple of walls/fences to cross.Walker Dan22/09/2021
From the South. Also visited trig. Cloud down with wetting drizzle.NormanW10/06/2021

4/5 Dewey Day. A medley of 5 Deweys around Alston from nearby roads: Hard Rigg, Pike Rigg, Ayle Common, Alston Moor and Park Fell. (S)silveracorn_alan18/05/2021
Parked in layby to S. Track NE then ROW and across fields.PGCE17/02/2021
Parked in the lay by/pull in on the opposite side of the road from the track, used the Right of way to reach a wall and followed this to a gate, through the gate and round to the summit. Returned the same way, One hour for Two and half miles.WAYNE ROWLETT06/06/2020

From the lay-by near the Garrigill lead mine at NY 75018 42439. Took the RoW up to cross a track, then onwards up the fell to the summit, using gates in the walls. Returned much the same way. With AT.Man of Kernow101/06/2019
Large new pull-in on inside of bend in road (NY 7502 4242). Grassy track keeps to left of mapped RoW (wall stile at NY 7509 4265) to start of access land (around NY 7518 4331), then took a near enough direct line to hill top and trig.jonglew07/03/2019
metalled track to waterworks then quad track to summit, passing mine working on way. continued to trig pillarcjo17/02/2019
Parked just to NW of Galligill community to North, used good track to gain access land which continued almost to the trig point on pleasant pastures. Over the wall then another to high point, back past a v interesting and near complete lime kiln. Easy back down.nordicstar04/12/2018
Parked on bit of old road near Shield Hilltop. Across road and through gate to use track to access moorland. Gate and fence to negotiate to gain Dodd top then onto trig and lime kiln.Dugswell217/05/2018
Up from Galligill to northnordicstar12/04/2018
Large parking area on bend at 750424 - Up road for about 250yd & then ENE along track until shortly before a small stone building (farm gate on your right) - Up ATV track to gate in wall at NY75182 43296 & then continued to unmarked summit. (PM)gerrybowes05/04/2018
Easy parking on the bend at 750424. Walked in from 748425 and then from the ruin took a direct line to the summit. Plenty of snow but glorious blue skies. With GB in just over one hour.bolton05/04/2018
With Eire, Evan, Sail, Danu, Coel & Alfie. Large parking area on bend in road (B6277) by Garrigill Burn. We followed the public footpath running NNE (clearly never used!). Easy walk up to the summit. There's a wall to climb over if you want to visit the trig point (done with Danu, Sail & Coel). Back same way but avoided initial footpath by using Access Point down to road.Dangerous Dave29/08/2017
Approach from S (B6277) - went on to bag trig (second visit) - Cross Fell Group to SSW is very prominent.ger26/05/2017

Parked at bend on road then walked up the road until opposite the byway to Shieldhill. Then went through gate for a short trespass until reaching access land, then onto ruined building, and then tracks all the way to the summit through gates. No walls to climb.Fisky Boy09/05/2016

Started on tarmac track to newish building to south then just followed the ATV tracks to just short of the summit. Bit squelchy in last 100m before fence. Return on same line.SS12/03/2016
Parked at NY 76319 42319. Couldn't go any further road covered in ice and deep snow. Walked up road and turned off to go over Nunnery Hill. Then NW to Alston Moor. Returned SE to NY 75696 42169. Walked up road back to car. Walking on the moor difficult. Lots of snow with a crust that was not strong enough to take my weight. Where possible used snow by walls, which generally took weight.MikeM08/02/2015
With G. From Alston > Annat Walls > Newberryside mine then up fell to trigpoint & summit. Return to Alston via Garrigill & Pennine Way.RT197004/01/2015
With Jo, circular walk from Nenthead: well sign posted but invisible on ground footpaths to moor, then followed fence/wall right to Middle Fell tripillar (easier crossing fence into adjacent field at GR NY 75209 43985 and then over 2nd fence), then back to Alston Moor (Middle Fell), (easier crossing at wall corner GR NY 74944 43776) and onto Flinty Fell returning through mine areas. Weather; sunny, light breeze, warm, good visibility.amblerbob20/07/2014
From B6277, ample parking on bend. Followed footpath then access land.rhalstead20/04/2014
Plenty of parking at NY747,425. Through gate opposite parking then more or less a straight line to summit. Ground less boggy than expected. This is Access Land, but there are two stone walls to climb each way - gate through the others.Crib Goch05/03/2014

From near loop in road to S. Intermittent track through mined area, then wall. Long grass at summit. Visited TP some distance away; looked higher.Aye Jimmy04/08/2013
Start ~ 742428. Followed Waterworks track then a faint path to summit.steve hudson11/06/2013
Also from the bend in the road. If you follow the approximate line of the footpath there is a gate so no climbing equipment needed. Marked it on GPS but it failed to save.destaylor05/05/2013
Climbed up from bend in the road (where there is parking spot) to old lime kiln & reached cairn at 4.15pm. Then on to trig point (watched carefully by some Highland cattle) and back to car as the rain set in!signyred24/08/2011
Bagged on same day as Flinty Fell from minor Rd NY 76567 42383. Access via fenced gap in wall near quarry. Walked north to meet wall/fence. Followed this to NY 75455 43797 then beeline to summit. Try and ignore the fact that the trig & 578m sh look higherDavid Gradwell10/10/2010

From SE -with Darren. Waited in car for rain to (mostly stop) then as quickly as possible before rain came back in again- whilst we spent a good few hours at the National Lead Mining Museum at Kilhope - in an area classified as Britain's first GEOPARK in 2003 for its geological heritage.Chris Pearson02/08/2006
