Across from Little Whernside. Not as bad as others described most of the way but became more of a heather bash the nearer one got. The top is very flat.clivevilla19/03/2024
Either LIDAR readings are being measured incorrectly or interpreted incorrectly.Matt10/08/2023
Parked by church in Horsehouse, along road to Arkleside, then followed good track uphill. Kept on track to shooting hut then across moor and one fence to top. Hp seemed to be closer to Spot height than GR given here, south of post and east of white marker. Did not see Matt or anyone else today not as bad as was expecting.. Onto Little Whernside. My 100th English Dodd.PeterD10/08/2023
After Little Whernside. After crossing the byway at the col its basically an excerise in slogging through heather and avoiding deep holes filled with water. Even though the hill top is parched and everything crunchy and dusty under foot still ended up way past ankle deep in grotty water! The hill is the most boring, featureless hump I've ever encountered. So broad you can't really ever say you are on the summit - and means there is zero view of the surrounding country. The only variation is whether the heather is burnt or not. Really is the hill that proves you'll trudge anywhere if it has a green triangle on Hill Bagging you need to turn red!MrChris198014/06/2023
After Little Whernside, straightforward descent and reascent to what looks like the top then a descent and reascent to the featureless moor, the hill name seemingly fitting the landscape. Descent to Scar House reservoir but stopped on an appropriately sited rock for a coffee and sustenance. Continuation to Woodale Moss...Dazingdale28/05/2023
From the Scar House Resr parking area, up to revisit Little Whernside first for the trig buried block, then along a boggy ridge to here. Who knows where the high point is, all flat and wet moorland, and seems flatter and is wetter with the cloud down and pelting with rain... a bit bleak. On to Great Haw and back for a 14.6km round of wetness!jonglew01/03/2023
From Arkleside. With B and Rjenx21/01/2023
From Scar House reservoir car park then onto Great Hawmatty1971b26/08/2022
Scar House dam along track past ruined village of Lodge and onto ancient footpath that contours below Little Whernside to the coll at SE012768. After ascending Great Whernside and back over Little Whernside followed the path across the track on the coll and up to the crest of Dead Man's. Through the gate by ruined building and along fence to fence leading SE at SE055785. Followed this to plateau and crossed to summit. SE058784 looked higher than SE056783. Descended SE to Gladstones and traversed them eastwards to pick up track down through disused quarry to the dam.Flatfield09/05/2022
Parked at reservoir car park for a circuit of Dead Man's Hill (summit and alternative) and Great Haugh.PGCE16/03/2022
Visited Dead Man's Hill, Little Whernside and Great Whernside during the fourth day of our circular walk around the Yorkshire Dales National Park from Braidley to Kettlewell. A stunning day, with superb visibility extending from the North York Moors to the Lake District. With Annette, Christine, Geoff and Steve. 17km with 630m ascent in 6 hours.silveracorn_alan04/11/2021
Parking on grass just to the S of the dwellings of Arkleside. Up good track, L fork after roofed sheep fank for Deadmans Hill. A wasteland of grey slime lichen and standing water. Sheep skeleton in MEB (SEB in this case) just E of bridleway crossing point at pt 482. Fair path on S side of fence, changing to plastic sheet lined ATV track on N side when bogs encountered, up to Little WhernsideIsbjorn23/08/2021
19 miles 3483ft walk. Start at Kettlewell, to Great Whernside, Little Whernside, Dead Mans Hill, Scar House Reservoir and Angram Reservoir, back over Great Whernside to Kettlewell.stephenbuda20/08/2021
After Woodale Moss, crossed top of reservoir, took track westwards and turned north at track marked Arkleside. At crest of this track, turned east, then after a short climb followed fence NE to come up against wire fence leading S which was difficult to cross. Eventually found gate and crossed rough grass and heather to reach unmarked summit.peter4lc18/08/2021
3/4 Woodale Moss from reservoir cp then back and cross reservoir bridge and up to col then turn left along fence line for easy climb to Little Whernside. Back to col. fence line East to Dead Mans Hill and Great Haw. Then descend five mi utes tough to SW to pick up tracks and roads of the shooting complex to return to reservoir head. Good route. Four hours.nickywood118/08/2021

From Little Whernside. The summit is hard to pinpoint.rfoster13/04/2021
A high level traverse of the Top of Nidderdale from Scar House Reservoir, visiting Great Haw, Dead Man's Hill, Little Whernside and Great Whernside. Return direct down to Angram Reservoir. A clear sunny day to the east, but low cloud to the west. Splendid remote lockdown hike! 25km with 720m ascent in 6h45m. (S)silveracorn_alan20/03/2021
From Arkleside where I accidentally parked in a loading/turning area for the farm sorry, followed the track up to the Gamekeepers hut and a line of grouse butts over to the fence where there is a style, bog trot over to grid ref and back to the fence this time due south following this to the fence I originally climbed over via the style. Continued west by the side of fence until I met the ROW leading up to Little Whernside, returning to the track at grid ref 04373 78240 for the trek back to Arkleside. A little under Seven and a half miles in Three and half hours.WAYNE ROWLETT07/07/2020
From Great Haw. Had been waiting for a spell of dry weather for this walk and about ten weeks without rain did the trick. On to Little Whernside.Wycombe Wanderer27/05/2020
A bit of hard work heather, but I didn't suffer a demise prophetic to its name.vegibagger21/11/2019
From Little Whernside I returned to the col between that hill and Dead Man's Hill and took the right of way towards the latter. When the RoW turned away from the hill, I ascended heathery terrain to the unmarked summit. In descent, I headed towards the Gladstones and followed the track through the disused quarry, over the reservoir dam and back to the car park by Scar House Reservoir.Sprog09/11/2019
Parked in Pateley Bridge and followed Nidderdale Way to Nabs. Bivvied overnight on Wig Stones then this was sixth of eight hills. Seemed a long way from Little Whernside due to tired legs!Wheelsy25/05/2019

Start ~ Arkleside. Followed good tracks up to shooters hut then crossed the heather to summit. It was reasonably dry under foot so we continued to Little Whernside by following ridge fence. Returned via main track to Arkleside. With Wombourne.steve hudson14/01/2019
From Arkleside followed the shooters track up to their hut then took to the heather to the summit. We followed the fence along the ridge through very boggy heather to Little Whernside then returned to a good track back to car. With SH.wombourne14/01/2019

Parked on a bend close to Arkleside House at 044805. The track to the Keepers Hut at 055788 is very good. From the Hut the 'going' is not too bad underfoot. Solo walk of 1.75 hours return.bolton24/04/2018

From Arkleside up bridleway. At last footpath sign(the one after the sign saying Dead Man's Hill 3/4 mile)continue on shooters' track for about 20 yards, then there is a dry, grassy track to the right up to the ridge wall/fence.This seemed much better than the path.Good luck after that!catman29/02/2016

From car park at reservoir (access via water works road running up west side of R Nidd) Little Whernside, Dead Man's Hill (easiest route is to take NE side of fence heading SE from boundary which is not shown on map, then at crest head for solitary post and summit is just beyond) Great Haw, car park, Woodale Moss.ijpowell03/09/2015
Small roadside parking area just above Thwaite Arms in Horsehouse - Arkleside- S up track to col - Little Whernside - Back to col & on to Dead Man's Hill (last 600m or so through heather & tussock grass) - Dropped down to shooting hut at 055788 - Down track to Arkleside. (S)gerrybowes25/08/2015

A circular walk from Scar House car park including the true summit of Dead Man's Hill and then onto Little Whernside. Weather fine and clear, good views all round include 2 fairly low reservoirs.higlett28/09/2014
from Horsehouse, with Dead Man's Hill. sunny, cold wind.joseph mitchell24/03/2014
Continuation of walk from Little Whernside. Avoided the worst of the peat hags by traversing round the north flank of the fell to a fence junction. Then south following fence, and then about 100m east to 'summit'. Descended SSE to a ruined building, picking up the track down back to the Scar House Reservoir dam.Man of Kernow104/01/2014
Easy parking at reservoir. 2800 3619 7725. Track then 1km heather, path then same again. 3619 - 7725 no paths - slog as other logs. Then took good track back.destaylor23/07/2013
Walked from Scar House car park up to the ridge between Little Whernside and Dead Mans Hill then on to summit of Dead Mans Hill then along the ridge to Great Haw and then headed back to the car park. Beautiful summers evening and amazingly dry underfoot. Walked with Graham and Ruben. Amazing cotton grass.karencooke09/07/2013
From Scarhouse carpark, diagonally past Carle Side quarry, then heather to 'summit'. Continued to Gt Haw and Little South Haw. Perfect Spring day.Aye Jimmy11/03/2012
From Scar House reservoir car Park. Bridleway to Whernside col, Little Whernside, Dead Man's Hill, Great Haw, down to Nidderdale way for return to car. Clear and sunny. Rough heather/tussock grass over all of this area.PaulH27/04/2011
A lovely solo run on a nice autumnal morning. Up from Scar House reservoir onto these wonderfully lonely vast moors. Over Dead Man's Hill first (I took extra care esp as on my own given the name!) and a good peaty run to Little Whernside and down through broken walls to lower level route back. Had just started new job near York.Chris Pearson20/10/2010
