The path to Broad Cairn doesn't go out to this cairned top. I have logged this previously in my paper log book but don't remember visiting this cairn - not convinced. Never mind, I've done it again to be sure!Dangerous Dave17/09/2017

With friend. From Spittal of Glenmuick on bikes to Glas-allt-Shiel. Objective: all Munro tops of Broad Cairn and Cairn Bannoch. After Broad Cairn, Craig of Gowal, Crow Craigies, Fafernie, Cairn Bannoch. Continued SE aiming for the Munro top called Cairn of Gowal. We came to a point where there was higher ground on our left but a cairn on a summit point SE of where we were, which we decided to go to. However, when we turned round and faced the way we had come we realised that the high ground we had by-passed was higher than where we were. Subsequent examination of various editions of Munro’s tables and maps showed that the top where we were was where the Munro top called Cairn of Gowal height 983m stood as listed in editions of Munro’s tables from 1974 to 1990. However, the 1997 edition gives a relocated position at height of 991m on the high ground we had bypassed. So we went back to the summit of the 991m top. We finished with Creag an Dubh-loch.pwbellarby06/09/2013

Solo walk. From Auchallater. I walked to Lochcallater Lodge and then on footpath that goes across SW slopes of Carn an t-Sagairt Mòr, then to the summit of Cairn Bannoch. I continued over the Munro Top called Cairn of Gowal (991m) and Cairn of Gowal (983m) to Craig of Gowal. I returned to Cairn of Gowal and Cairn Bannoch and went round to the summit of Fafernie. Returned to join the outward route back to Auchallater. The first two hours were dry. Then there was torrential rain and much mist and a little snow. There was much flooding on the road making driving hazardous.pwbellarby14/10/2001

Alone. From Spittal of Glenmuick I walked via Glas-allt-Shiel and then up the ESE ridge of Creag a’ Ghlas-uillt (using a path which is a continuation of one skirting under Little Pap) to this summit. I went on to Top of Eagle’s Rock, Carn a’ Choire Bhoidheach, Carn an t- Sagairt Beag, Carn an t-Sagairt Mòr, Cairn Bannoch, Cairn of Gowal, Broad Cairn followed by descent to Dubh Loch and Spittal of Glen Muick. It was clear with no rain. There were good views of Creag an Dubh-loch, Loch Kander and long distance. Many dear and ptarmigan were seen.pwbellarby31/07/1983
Cairngorm Club meet. With Geraldine Guest, Robin Howie. From Spittle of Glenmuick. After reaching Creag an Dubh-loch and Broad Cairn we went on to Cairn of Gowal, Carn Bannoch, and Craig of Gowal. At the latter there are 3 cairns with much the same height - middle one highest point. We descended down the slope to Loch Esk, and then across to the south of Bachnagairn. We went down the glen to the quarry near Braedownie. There is no bridge where the track crosses the river near Moulzie. We got wet. Mist was continuous from the start to coming off Craig of Gowal when it gradually lifted. There was soft snow on the ground, but not deep, from the start to Bachnagairn. There was falling snow while on the tops.pwbellarby24/04/1983

Cairngorm Club meet with Jonathan Bellarby, David Moseley. From Auchallater. After ascending Carn an t-Sagairt Mór and Fafernie continued to Cairn Bannoch, the top at NO226821*, and Cairn of Gowal - it was warm and sunny. Continued to Craig of Gowal, Creag an Dubh-loch, Broad Cairn and Spittal of Glenmuick. Bright with clear weather all day. There was some mist seen on Carn an Tuirc etc but it did not reach us. There were snow patches and it was icy on the ground. * Note subsequently added: This top has been found to be higher than the summit of Craig of Gowal, as defined in 1981, and so is now the summit of Craig of Gowal.pwbellarby25/10/1981
