From parking at 325957. Track up Glen Girnock to Camlet, then on to Sgor an h-Iolaire, followed by Creag nam Ban and Creag Ghiubhais. Difficult descent to east, would have been better returning by route of ascent and taking path back to start.clashcityrocker03/02/2024
Parked by the track gate. After being quizzed by 2 policemen in a patrol car as to what I was doing there (think the King and Queen are in residence up the road so they were being cautious) and explaining to them I was bagging a hill, they drove away happy. Up the track a little way then left through the trees on a bit of a path. Found the path through the heather most of the way. Returned the same way. 1.6 miles. My final section 7 Marilyn.JulieB02/10/2023
Interesting little hill with exceptional views on the way up, and the sort of obscure place you'd never ever dream of visiting if it wasn't for Marilyn/Hump bagging.Alex C01/10/2023
Parked by gate in deer fence. Followed track for about 100m then up through conifers to join ridge. Lovely summit apart from the deer keds! With Alex C.Dangerous Dave01/10/2023
Stumbled on the path through the heather after a short distance thankfully. As noted by Pete N below the path is just to the right of a direct line. From the high point of the tree line aim for the tree just to the right of the direct line and you should hit it.ARM04/03/2023
As Willy Ross. Path just to the right of the ridge (looking up) easily followed once found. Need to pay attention to keep to it on the way down. Can go straight up from wicket gate - no need to follow track.PeteN28/02/2023
Parked at track end at NW end of hill. Walked 100-200m on track then struck left through wood. Vague path most of way along NW ridge from 100m beyond wood edge. Cairn but no views from summit.willyross24/01/2023
Parked NO 30402 95793. Followed track to edge of woodland, then staying within the tree line to avoid the heather walked up to the start of the NW ridge. Ridge then followed - rough through heather but with traces of a path to the summit.PeteF16/10/2022
Up the NW route on the path,,,it definitely exists,Adrian14/08/2022
Sunny evening, stiff breeze. Flies bothering me almost all the way up and down. Rough but lovely hill. Traces of path. Followed cart track a bit on way up but down directly through woods to car – better. Rounsfell08/08/2022
Followed NW ridge from kissing gate straight up, no sign of cairned path except one solitary cairn before the start of the bouldersgary198116/01/2022
Similar story as Gill, really good animal trods through the heather but very faint. Worth looking for them. Rocks are, however, a bit unstable. Very windy but sheltered by the trees.iangalbraith21/09/2021
With Big J, not much of a view from the summit but a good walk on a hot dayNozzer25/08/2021
Knee high heather, airless heat, relentless black flies. Says it all. With Nozzer.BigJ25/08/2021
I took a direct line up from the footpath and came down the easier west ridge..Peterb04/11/2020
Was Gill writing about the same hill?! The way I found was more like a Royal Marines before breakfast training drill -short but intense. NW slope - of lower pine forest is lovely but then wade through the heather asap onto sanctuary of steep but mostly stable boulder fields and 'suck it up' at a good pace. Road to top in a 30 min blast. Descent same way felt wobbly on boulder fields -so preferred open heather -good romp possible but ill advised due to leg grabbing hidden dead trees - which wrenched out a boot eyelet. 25 mins down to surprisingly find a police patrol checking on my parked car.Chris Pearson26/08/2020
From track to W (quarry dis on map) - good parking. Direct thru' easy open wood. Feint path from NO 30683 95766 to stony band, then intermittent path thru' open wood and calf high bilberry/heathercarole engel05/07/2020

Purgatory in the wet - slippery heather shoots and lichenous rocks abound. From tiny parking spot next to gate at NO304957, on green lane to where emerged from trees. Up within edge of trees to avoid heather, to apex of trees on ridge. Then straight up the ridge, deep heather, against the nap, no path initially, but a very faint one becomes clearer with height until a band of rocks is met at a 5-stone cairn on a rock. Slipped and slid up the rocks, picking the easiest looking line, until back onto vegetation. A tad easier to make out the bits of thin path, in descent, but the 5-stone cairn, which marks the 'path' in the heather, is hard to spot.Isbjorn30/05/2019
Solo trip by NW ridge as others have described. Forest cover obscures all views from top.Invicta1430/04/2019

Parked by the gate on the B976 at NO304957, then along the track and up the heathery slopes to the summit. Very pleasant in the warm sunshine.martin_hall08/04/2019
A really good and unusual walk. Parked by the gate, along the track a few yards, then easily up through the trees on nice mossy bilberry and pine needles, with bits of path. Kept in the trees as long as possible, then found a good path on the NW ridge. There are even cairns at the first small boulder field. No knee deep heather, few boulders, not slippy in dry conditions. Continues with easy going up through ancient gnarly pines to the top. Fine views along the Dee in both directions. A much maligned hill.Gill04/11/2018
Ascended from the north west, but descended south east for Creag nam Ban through thick heather, boulders and small boulder fields.JohnW24/10/2018
From small pedestrian gate through woodland and up steep broad ridge, very pleasant woodland at summit.cjo15/09/2018
As others from small pull off near path start NW of hill. Lovely old pine woodland then broke off up the steep heather/heavy screw slops to dwarf pine dummy area. Fine view to LochnagarN.Morters08/08/2018
Date Uncertain. Clear memorable day - parked at Littlemill. Ascended NW from track through boulders and trees, scrambling places. Easier descent roughly SE with clear open views. Return by track to Littlemill.sarahk01/07/2018
From gate, straight up through open forest to NW ridge, pick up faint path through heather and old woodland to summit. GPS track can help picking up path and gate on return! Good parking 200 m W of gate.henryfm19/05/2018
I found this tough going although I did it in good timetrimarc217/05/2018
Up NW ridge, down SW ridge and back round path to start. Would go up and back down NW ridge next time, seems the best way.Dave McG25/03/2018

A fine little hill with pleasant views. With ElizyanneGmacT12/10/2017
approached along path marked on OS from west and then climbed southern slopes. Returned along western ridge, swiping at ticks trying to attack me en-route (take full body armour)raffemeister02/08/2016
Parked at same gate as mentioned by others and made way through heather and over slippery rocks in the rain. (Route shown at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/creag-ghiubhais-no313955-486m.html)Gayle21/05/2016
I parked at the gate - 304957 and headed SE along the path before deciding to 'go for it'. Not as bad as I thought it would be and much easier higher up. 1 hour and a quarter in decent late afternoon weather. Solo.bolton16/11/2015
With Jen from parking at side gate. Up though forest to ridge and then a battle uo through heathery slopes.nordicstar23/10/2015
from kissing gate follow path, then up through wood to the top, nice views, snow on top.robertphillips07/12/2014
You can fit 1 car beside the gate at 303958. Then the key is to stay just inside the edge if the mature trees and follow the crest of the ridge SE. The W face is impenetrable bracken and scree. Good views to EThearlaichdubh10/09/2014
On Day 10 of my TGO Challenge walk, on a day from Braemar to Ballater. Quite rough with deep heather, deep holes, and rock bands to the north east - hard work with a 15kg load!Phreerunner18/05/2014
Path and heathery slopes from the west. Not too hard.AndrewFinnimore26/10/2013
It started with a kiss. Alison is right about the trees, problem is the heather. Minimise that by ambling to NO 30683 95766 and then go directly uphill. Nice gnarled pines up top.Martin R25/11/2012
From track near roadside memorial over top to Littlemill. Superb ancient pines on north ridge, boulder scree on south side.neimcv16/09/2012
With IS ans MS. Knee-deep heather all the way but great views over deeside.amswanston08/09/2012
With AS. Part Carried. With IS ans MS. Knee-deep heather all the way but great views over deeside. iks08/09/2012
I found some sketchy tracks up from due south of the summit - at this time of year , the marked path around the hill does exist steep ascent from this path but no problem with the treesAlisonFox66 02/04/2012
Started at kissing gate at 304957. Only a ditch remains of the path shown around the south of the hill, and there are no paths through the heather and scree. Best may be to stay on the NW ridge. The tree density is well below problem level.Topographer5714/07/2011

Fight trees and clamber boulders from the road.Eddie21/08/2004
On road to padlocked gate in deer fence. On track through wood to get a view of RP. Very deep unpleasant heather and boulders on uneven ground. To ridge. Gunshots and dogs in distance. Gradient eased and bits of path appeared through crags to shelving top. 14.45.arranc16/06/2004
