Same route as others from start of track to Upper Bwlch. Through farm and woods then stile to top. | PeterD | 14/02/2023 |
Same route as others. The stile is in the far left corner of the field after the woods. Lovely hill. | Rob Rees | 08/02/2023 |
Easy parking by start of lane to Upper Bwlch at SN 9988 6936 - RoW through farmyard & Bwlch Wood - On exiting Bwlch Wood, headed up across pasture to top corner of Berth-abley Wood where there is a stile (SO 00811 68652) - Over stile & a short climb to remains of cairn in bracken. No barbed wire! Had an enjoyable chat with farmer on ascent & again after walk. (S) | gerrybowes | 17/09/2021 |
As others: parked at start of lane to Upper Bwlch. Up via Upper Bwlch and Bwlch Wood. | PGCE | 24/07/2021 |
From SN997692 via Upper Bwlch and Bwlch Wood | Jim.Fothergill | 30/08/2019 |
Easy route from NW (SN 998 693 - track to Upper Bwlch - very friendly). Summit cairn dismantled | carole engel | 09/10/2018 |
Accessed via Upper Bwlch Farm track ( RoW), then through lovely oakwoods to grassy domed summit. HP is a shattered cairn next to bracken, which covers a small depresion. Nice views, as promised by the friendly farmer we met on the way up. Easy parking by farm gate. | Denise | 31/08/2018 |
Good roadside parking at start of track to Upper Bwlch. Meet friendly farmer who say's there's a fine view from the top of Castle Hill. Through the farm and then open oak woods to summit field of pasture with islands of bracken. Cairn levelled. | RichardM | 31/08/2018 |
From SN 998693, where ~3 cars could be parked. The tarmacked farm road to Upper Bwlch is a ROW on foot and the path through Bwlch Wood is easily found. No problems finding ROWs on this approach. Continuing along the path looked appealing, but hills must be bagged so over the BWF to get to a pleasant enough summit. With Pete on a sunny and warm day. | pwheeler | 06/05/2018 |
Parked in the lay-by on the A44 by the telephone box in Gaufron, at SN 99881 68148. Took the RoW past Yr Allt, but failed to find the RoW to Bwlch with the diversions, ending up on the lane west of the hill. Then took the lane south to Bwlch from SN 99867 69381,past the farm and up into the wood. Left the RoW to climb steeply up to the summit - one barbed wire fence to negotiate - easiest in north corner. Returned to RoW to head on RoW round north-east flank of the hill, crossing river and marsh to reach the lane at a bridge at SO 01544 69430 - not a good route at all! Then took lane round north side of the hill to access my outward route. Best route is to park on the lane at the beginning of the route to Bwlch - plenty of space north of the junction. 1/8 First of Eight on very wet and windy day(Castle Hill/Cefn Nantmel/Pen Yr Onnen/Wennallt/Garn/Cefn-Crin/llywy/Crungoed Bank) | Fergalh | 31/01/2016 |
As clivevilla. | Chris Peart | 09/07/2014 |
Frpm phone box: Not too keen on the way the folks in the big house have bypassed the old track. met a very pleasant farmer on the top, who arrived up the grass in a landrover. | GordonAdshead | 06/07/2013 |
Parked bu phone box to SW. Followed track to 2nd farm (idyllic collection of animals including a friendly and vocal pig) then up diagonally through wood as per map. | clivevilla | 08/12/2012 |
Sixth HuMP of the day with Phil Cooper from a NE direction. Parked near gateway at SO 018690, entered field via gate, crossed stream belowwhere the 2 branches join, across wet ground then up through wood on overgrown path. So it becomes easier to get into nearby field. Then reasonably easy to locate summit cairn. | Dugswell2 | 16/11/2012 |
Parked in lay by of busy A44. Across fields on a signed path. This ended at a keep out sign! Uphill in general direction of the top, loose bracken under trees. Uphill over a BWF onto topmost grassy dome. 8.55. No cairn. | arranc | 25/07/2012 |
Started SO 017691. 'Interesting' navigation (with only a 1:50000 map)on missing path until you get to the top of the woods. heap of stones on the top. | Martin R | 06/08/2011 |
Started from bwlch farm to the west.Followed footpath to near summit through lovely little wood. Hopped over fence by old tree and onto the summit. | DARRENG | 10/07/2011 |
Parked 999 682. Paths tricky to follow - obstructed and ploughed in places it seems. | destaylor | 15/04/2011 |
