Thrashed up through pines from west breaking off lower branches of pines . Walked from Blewog. Felt hard work in rain. | Denise | 30/07/2023 |
From forest road to W. At SN8362,3738 we head into the Spruce forest along a line of partially trimmed lower branches. Pick our way slowly up to the summit area of mossy ground in lines of trees. High point unmarked. No view. All very messy in the rain. | RichardM | 30/07/2023 |
Grass verges by Penywaun very soft so drove up forest track & easy parking on inside of sharp bend at 846369 - Forest tracks until due W. and about 90m from summit - Put on gardening gloves & used secateurs to cut away the lower spindly branches, many of them now dead, to create a decent enough pathway up to the summit ridge; took about 45 minutes - Gained the ridge a few metres S. of top so a bit more pruning to reach the summit GR. This one takes time and patience, and a almost fanatical devotion to sitkas. Started from the lane near Craigyrwyddon, where there is a wide area to park at SN 84632 36466. The going up on the forest roads and tracks is no problem but, as described by others, the last 90m is not a pleasant experience. We entered from the west. A machete would be helpful to hack a route through the lower dead branches. There is a clear summit though, on a mound, where the trees are slightly thinner and a little daylight filters in - at SN 83721 37386, according to my GPS. The descent east was no better, and there is still no path where the RoW is shown on the map. We worked our way north along its line till eventually we reached a bit of a firebreak. Taking it west, the forest finally released us from its twiggy grasp onto the forest road. We then did a big circuit of Halfway Forest back to the car. With MP and AW. | Man of Kernow1 | 30/12/2019 |
As described, a bit of a fir-ry battle. Going east from the summit quickly leads to more open ground, but it is pretty rough underfoot getting back south to the track. | PGCE | 08/04/2019 |
Parked close to the end of the drive to Penywaun and got stuck but borrowed a bristly door mat from a holiday cottage and freed the car. The top is in thick Sitka but no fallen trees, brambles or bog so by no means the worst ever. Top has some grass in an otherwise dark treescape and is at 83720 37384. | clivevilla | 06/02/2019 |
With K, M and RM. Forestry track from near Penywaun. | Ashley | 30/05/2016 |
Nightmare on Sitka Street. Got to 90ms from summit without difficulty and then my troubles started. GPS was unreliable and having reached the top I then had great problems fighting my way back out of the forest. Took over an hour to get back to where I. Had left my poles. My worst ever hill! | Campbell Singer | 03/01/2016 |

Final hump in this area - leaving the best till last... As previous logs, an easy stroll up from Penywaun farm, then a slightly more diffcult final 70m. It is quite feasible to push through the plantation, just takes a little time - shorts not advised though! | jonglew | 26/06/2015 |
It's in there somewhere! | Chris Peart | 26/06/2015 |
Same experience as everyone else but rather perversely relished. Part of that broad spectrum in bagging such ridiculous hills. Chris and I forced our way through on hands and knees, sometimes on our bellies. No way to be absolutely certain of the high point but we can't have been far away | Colin Crawford | 26/06/2015 |
one thinks one had the summit... | dicky | 01/02/2015 |
Within 100m of grid ref. Tree density prevented further progress. | arranc | 26/07/2014 |
Summit not easy to locate, the ROW to E can no longer be followed and dense spruce from track to W make this a difficult one! | chalky1953 | 30/09/2013 |
SN8373037380 | Anton | 02/08/2013 |
As MR. Lovely walk on tracks until within 60m of summit. Then nightmare. Closely planted 8' high spruce. Semi impenetrable. Not even a weakness on the return. Advise take full body armour. | destaylor | 15/03/2012 |
A hill that starts benignly from Penwaun farm. Ends in a desperate struggle. Don't attempt when it is hot, humid, flies abound and you are not in the mood for closely planted spruce. There is no ROW to the east of the summit. | Martin R | 02/08/2011 |
