Logged Descriptions  (logged by 49 users)ByDate of Ascent
In heavy rain as darkness fell. Tracks most of way then final short but very unpleasant thrash through adolescent pines with bushy low branches and deep mossy pools between tussocks. Unmarked and all very level. Parked to NE at road end Cwmcerwyn.Denise 17/02/2024
First attempt was from the firebreak to the N and I was about to write but 'much easier', when deciding a more accurate description is 'less difficult / possible' from the firebreak to the E. Water filled holes, brambles and brash not helped by darkness, heavy rain and a mutinous companion. There's not even much to show for the struggle when you make it, though it is quite quiet there alone.RichardM17/02/2024
11 mile solo run loop from lay-by next to Margam lake .. Mynydd Y Castell and Mynydd Margam plus visit to the trigmilejunkie26/02/2023
As others, easy parking on bend to E. at SS 8451 8833 - Along RoW to join forest track at 829882 - N. up track to wide ride at SH 8305 8882 - Headed W. along ride for about 100m, keeping close to edge of mature trees - Turned left & SSW along another wide ride for about 130m; tough going - Turned right & WSW across cleared area for about 80m to the summit GR; very tough going with ruts, old stumps, long grass, lots of bramble, etc. Lots of brash in summit area so did a bit of sculpting! Parked at SS845871. A nice Christmas walk on forestry roads with a little bit of off road walking at the end.Ramblingpaul25/12/2020
From bend in road to ESE following path W up hill then NW to corner of forest. Then along tussocky ground before heading into new plantings to summit.PGCE11/07/2019
Once leave track at SS 8305 8882 on a deep trod between tussocks, the going deteriorates. The trod continues on the break SW - no trees, just open really rough ground. Once off the trod its deep tussocks/reeds/brambles/deep water filled holes and all for a flat top.carole engel08/10/2018
Parked at 84514 88317, up track then veered off right towards forest corner, along edge of forest before a left turn along a treeless routs and then a shortish but awful off piste to summit of Mynydd Margam. Back to forest corner and easy forest tracks to Mynydd Bach then retraced steps back to car.clivevilla23/09/2018
From bend in road to ESE following path W up hill then NW to corner of forest. Approach through felled forest; initially it seemed better than previous reports, but managed to plunge up to knee in hidden icy pools of water by tree stumps on 3 occasions, so not the most pleasant ordeal. Visited the 10-fig reference and wandered / staggered around other potential high points before descending in gathering darkness.RobertP25/11/2017
Space for 1 car in Cwm Sychbant, up path and then forest track. Ended up approaching from SW which was good until the last 300m, then horrible and much thrashing around. Tumulus seemed slightly higher than spot height. Then on to Mynydd Bach.PeterD19/08/2017

With Colin and Doug.Chris Peart02/07/2015
Good parking on bend of minor road and good tracks to the forest, now felled. Some very rough tracks lead through to the approximate summit area but the high point is hard to establishColin Crawford02/07/2015
From estate above Maesteg station, easy walk on forest tracks until last 300yrds then plod through roots/bog stumps...rhalstead06/04/2015
2/5 parked below hill and followed track not easy top to find !Fergalh15/01/2015
walk up from 844884. trees felled on the hill. Top is just north of a small pond. trig still clear of trees at 819888. very wet on old forest ride.arranc07/10/2013
Parked at forest car park to SE, walked a 9mile roughly circular route mainly on forest tracks to take in trigs at Moel Ton-mawr and Mynydd Margam before doing the HuMP. Each of these features involves negotiating rough forest ground, either old felled conifer plantations with associated boggy ground, or new conifer plantations - either way you will hate conifers with a passion after doing these trigs and HuMP! Interesting stone post with a cut benchmark just E of track near summit - the 6th C. Bodvoc Stone. Only a copy though, original is in Margam Stones Museum, Port Talbot.jonglew29/06/2013
Port Talbot to Maesteg. The boggy approach to the 344m trig was a delight compared to flailing around the felled ground about the 349m spot height. Found a firm patch beside Llyndwr Fawr then retreated to the track.Smudge08/12/2012
Last 300 meters is ankle breaking stuff. Came in from NE and exited to SW. Took in a couple of trig points and some caches on a pleasant days walking with friend. Forestry Commission vehicle out even on a Sunday - guarding agains thieves apparently.Father Ted15/01/2012
What an adventure! Rescued two sheep stuck up to their haunches in mud, fell in stream, told off by tree-feller fellah for ignoring H&S sign and puzzled by which tree stump could be it. Wouldn't it be so much easier if every hill had a trig at true summitMartin R28/07/2011
As per Des. Highest point seems to be near the tumulus not the spot height.chrisbien10/05/2011
Started at the right angle bend in the road to East. Excellent walk until last 300m. Then forestry clearance - all gone. Top could be anywhere.destaylor14/05/2010
Started from the B4282 at the golf club and walked along the heol-y-moch, this hill is designed largely for mountain bikers. Their has been some forestry clerance work close to the summit.Went on to visit the trig point which lies next to a very damp foothodder12/09/2009
Circular walk including TP. Parked in Margam Park.Dusty08/01/2009
