Parked under the railway viaduct on the edge of Crosby Garrett at NY 72689 09296. Took the track south for about a km, then various paths and sheep-tracks up to the natural HP and trig. Returned on a path NE to rejoin outward route. 4.8km, with 185m of ascent. | Man of Kernow1 | 16/03/2024 |
Circular walk from Crosby Garrett via trig point and summit. | Winterfloodian | 09/09/2023 |
Parking just after railway viaduct in Crosby Garrett. Up the grassy bridleway. Short venture over grass to trig and unmarked summit. Damp light rain. 2/3 | N.Morters | 23/10/2022 |
Parking at NY693065. Grassy tracks NE to gate in electric fence, then turned SE on ATV to ridge then thin FP to top. | Isbjorn | 15/08/2022 |
From Newbiggin-on-Lune via Brownber and Bents. Electric fence across ridge just before summit needs to be stepped over; there was a place where the wire was low enough. | IanHHill | 06/07/2022 |
Nice easy walk from Crosby Garrett with the Boo. Wasn't entirely sure where it was until I came down and read it was were the trig point is. Must learn to read maps | Alphaville199 | 19/05/2022 |
Visited during Day 19 of our Dales Circular walk from Little Asby to the end of the road above Hartley. Crossed from Little Asby Scar visited earlier in the day; Went to both the trig and HP. With Annette, Geoff and Steve. The full day's walk was 21.7km with 660m of ascent, taking us 6h 40m. | silveracorn_alan | 05/05/2022 |
bus to Ravonstonedale, up road going NW past Brownber. Pick up going NE. Easy going and all grass. straight after gate over electric fence, turn right and follow good tractor tracks going right from where a Small path leads off this and goes direct to summit and to trig | trimarc2 | 24/03/2022 |
Parked under the railway bridge at Crosby Garrett, along past a house, and up the track before the last house. Followed ATV track to N of the summit, then across grass. Also visited trig point. | LizH | 08/08/2021 |
HP not at trig but on one of several grassy mounds on limestone. then long route back to New House campsite via restored Raisback Dame's school. | Denise | 26/06/2021 |
From Little Asby Scar via the remote feeling Potts Valley. Most SW'ly of 3 grassy rises in sheep pasture. Trig pillar ~300m to NE. | RichardM | 26/06/2021 |

Great Ewe Fell > Nettle Hill > Nettle Hill 10676 > [Begin Hill] from GR: NY 69350 06509 | ronaldo333 | 20/12/2020 |
Used Bridleway just north of Brackenber on the Little Asby road, pleasant climb up and came back over all the little subsidiary tops for fun. (Great Ewe Fell is a good viewpoint). This is a cracking viewpoint for a long look along the Pennine hills right up to Cold Fell I think. | nickywood1 | 29/08/2020 |
on to Little Asby then back to reservoir | jef | 25/08/2020 |
Parked under the bridge arches at Crosby Garrett. One hour return in very hot conditions on decent trails. Solo. | bolton | 26/06/2020 |
Trig and summits. From the west on paths and easy grass. | PGCE | 05/06/2020 |
From Crosby Garrett. Surprisingly few nettles ;) | Clach Liath | 25/05/2020 |
Glorious grassy Hill trig pillar 10676 | vegibagger | 15/03/2020 |
P Crosby Garrett viaduct, anticlockwise circuit, mostly trails to trig & other summit possibilities, then continued along higher ground over & passed Great Ewe Fell before dropping down to a grassy track near the minor road which lead back to the bridleway for the return to Crosby Garrett. Dry, mild. | agentmancuso | 14/10/2019 |
From Crosby Garrett Viaduct, good tracks most of the way. | rhalstead | 27/05/2019 |
Easy parking under Crosby Garrett Viaduct - S. along road to fingerpost & start of bridleway - A steady & fairly gentle climb up bridleway & ATV tracks before heading up over tussocky grass to trig point & summit cairn. (S) | gerrybowes | 10/10/2018 |
Pleasant walk in on quadbike tracks from the west. There is an electric fence but it can be crossed at gate on the bridleway. Pleasant view down Potts valley. | JohnW | 03/10/2018 |
Unexciting grassy hill, almost devoid of rock features. There are nettles- round the cairn and trig point. Easy walk from Crosby Garrett, tussocky off paths. To descend, I aimed for a sunken way which led down the the village, joining the ROW (bw) to the E of the hill about 500m from start. Sunny and very warm. Revisited with brother Pete on a fine, clear day in 2021. This time from the S- easier going terrain, trig, then S. Top. Bands of limestone gave lots of options both upand down. | pwheeler | 22/07/2018 |
Parked under the viaduct in Crosby Garrett. Pleasant walk up over some reasonable ground, bit tussocky in places - took a direct line up and back. The 382m spot height looked higher from the trig, felt higher when I was on it, and gave me 1m higher reading on GPS. The accepted HP is about 40m SSW from the trig pillar. | jonglew | 10/07/2018 |
Nettle Hill from GR: NY 72688 09087 | ronaldo333 | 21/03/2018 |
Approached from Crosby Garrett. Great views. | ger | 14/03/2018 |
Grassy tracks to trigpoint and rocky cairn just beyond. | cjo | 14/01/2018 |
Followed tracks from west just above 279 spot height on map. These go virtually to the summit, which does have nettles! | Fisky Boy | 17/09/2017 |
With Fisky Boy. | Brenda Cloke | 17/09/2017 |
Nice open hillside. Lots of sheep. And 360 degrees view. A nice spot. With Rick and Bryher. | jenx | 28/08/2017 |
W Jenx and Bryher, this time from good parking at Crosby Garett. End of minor road and under railway arches, park up near to houses at end of lane. Used the multiple tracks/animal trods to gain summit. Fine view of Eden valley, Howgills, etc. | nordicstar | 28/08/2017 |
With K and RM. Following bridleway from SW. More complex and further than it looks. Accidentally ascended Little Ewe Fell thinking it was summit. There is a fence not shown on the map with a gate between Little Ewe and Nettle Hill; good track on far side of gate to close to summit. | Ashley | 14/08/2017 |
From NY726092. Visited both probable HPs. | summitsup | 10/07/2017 |
With Jo, from road to south west: bridleway past reservoir via alternate summit to Nettle Hill (top and trig). Continued across Hazzler Brow Scar to Little Asby Scar, then returning along road. Weather; sunny, warm, good visibility | amblerbob | 26/11/2016 |
Nettle Hill, Little Asby Scar, Fell Head, Beacon Hill | keithouk | 20/11/2016 |
With Sail, Evan, Eire & Alfie. The SW summit (also 382m) could just as easily be the highest point. | Dangerous Dave | 30/10/2016 |
FRom the small covered reservoir next to the minor road to the SW. Easy going along excellent grassy tracks. | Campbell Singer | 10/08/2016 |
Heavy snow obliterating views. Easy parking below the viaduct ... alt 711`ft. Realistcally, there is no point driving further up the road. Bear right up the bridleway (after the last house) and then head generally upwards. A series of vehicular tracks can be followed almost to the summit. Only about 300m of rough fell before the trig. 2.6 miles return. 70 mins. No barriers or fences at all. Two other spots appear as high so visited just in case these were subsequently adopted. | moorsman | 02/03/2016 |
Walked up C2C route and then the gate to avoid electric fence. A jogging tour and the return on track took less than 10 mins with slope and wind behind! | nordicstar | 30/07/2014 |
Got flagged down on the road by a lost dutch girl who had strayed a mile off the Coast to Coast path. A good call on her part as my route was along the Coast to Coast past the point where she went wrong, so was able to escort her to less confusing terrain. Did advise her not to try to cross the North Yorks Moors with a leaflet for a map and no compass. Easy climb from Coast to Coast by the camping barn. Electric fence is low but dodgy if like me you have short legs! Easily depressed using rucksac so no problem at all. | ijpowell | 11/07/2014 |
Walked up from Newbiggin on a circular caching walk. Warm and sunny and nice to see familiar hills from a different angle. | Walker Dan | 30/06/2014 |
On superb circular walk from above Newbiggin. Good views.Nearby Trig cracked. With Bridget and Oscar. | catman | 16/02/2014 |
With Catman and Oscar. | rosiebridge | 16/02/2014 |
With Bridget and Catman. | oscarrosie | 16/02/2014 |
Easy from Newbiggin-on-Lune. Exciting down to the viaduct across Scandale Beck. | Eddie | 06/01/2014 |
Short walk from Bents Camping Barn | davidpettit84 | 29/06/2013 |
From the moor road to the SW. Track up gradual rise, summit trig inside wall with nettles, only seen at last minute. Small cairn not far away is as high. One of the least dramatic hills ever done, but view to the N is good. The electric fence not far from the summit works! | Aye Jimmy | 31/08/2012 |
From Crosby Garrett, over Nettle Hill to Smardale Bridge and back along the lovely Smardale Gill. | milimana | 08/06/2012 |
Walked with Lesley from our half term cottage at Ravenstonedale. To Smardale packhorse bridge and old railway line then a zig zag of fpaths through fields to gain height. The pillow mounds passed and marked by the OS are according to Wiki known locally as 'Giant's graves' which are thought by some to be for drying bracken, and not for rabbits. | Chris Pearson | 22/02/2012 |
