Drove past twice before deciding to park at garlic farm and have breakfast. Followed paths from garlic farm and entered from quarry road back to farm for more garlic..Buck10/07/2023
Last of three off the busy, fast road along the downland ridge. Only practicable access from this road appeared to be at reservoir compound, where we carefully avoided blocking the gate. The opposite side of the road may have been ok, by a lovely patch of downland. Simplest part was the walk- broad farm track with gates and decent views- 1.5 miles return walk. With Pete; section 42 Hump compleation on a hot sunny day.pwheeler11/06/2023
Early morning start from near reservior compound. Over Gate and followed track to summit. Cows in first field which thankfully bolted in the opposite direction when they saw us.Jephcote8321/05/2023

Bramble on slope from road to south; probably easier from SW corner of field by road junction. HP by trig which is imprisoned within secure aerial enclosure. Also investigated nearby grassy cow pasture, all level.Denise 18/12/2021
Easiest way from road is over the BWF at SW corner of field (SZ 5432,8721). Inquisitive cows in field and trig pillar inside tiny mast enclosure. Pasture W of trig may rise very slightly. Unexpectedly sunny afternoon.RichardM18/12/2021
Dropped off at junction to S, then walked over 5 Tumps to Ryde. From junction, went W until I could get into field. Onwards to Ashley Down.PGCE01/12/2021
From the track junction at 535875. Climbed over the locked gate, then follow the obvious track that starts parallel to the road then goes through 2 gates to the compound. Touched the trig point through the fence. Very easy route. No blackberry bushes involved. Return same way 1.5miles round trip.JulieB09/09/2021
Parked in entrance to bridleway 1.2k west of summit. Climbed over double-gate and walked along unobstructed track all the way to the summit and back. KeithByTheC09/09/2021
Parked next to the Southern Water compound at SZ 5359 8746; able to do so without blocking their gates - Over road & along wide grass verge on well-worn path for about 450m to a stile & pedestrian gate at 543872 - Across road & over gate hidden behind hawthorn & bramble - Across pasture to the trig point inside compound & then through gate to unmarked summit. 6th and final HuMP of day completing all 6 HuMPs on the IoW. Expected this to be an easy bag by nipping along fence after parking on roadside south of summit, but nowhere to park after driving up and down a couple of times, plus impenetrable thorn hedge at top of steep bank. Ended up squeezing van alongside of fence of water utility enclosure at SZ56521 78500. Less than a mile from here following track to summit across two grass fields. Summit is slightly to the east of a mobile mast where trig pillar has been enclosed within security fence. Walked 50m or so beyond to the east as ground very flat just to be sure walked over highest point. Returned the same way then on to Southland C&MH club site for an early finish and relaxing evening before cating midday Ferry back to Lymington from Yarmouth tomorrow.mntainman22/09/2020
Cycled from Shanklin - approached from west, lifted my bike over the gate and cycled all the way to the summit. Gave the trig point a pat through its cage. The descent on the bike to the east coast was superb.Richard12/09/2020
As others from Quarry road, two fields to trig in small compound.PeterD08/07/2020
From quarry road over gates, then barbed wire and up to trig (inside fencing). Back and off to ferry.SS30/10/2018
As last two loggers. Unbelievably busy minor road.ngthack13/09/2018
From quarry entrance, across 2 fields - easy.twg2717/06/2018
Solo trip: quick dash across 2 fields while parked in gateway by quarry road entrance.Invicta1415/03/2018
With K, first after morning ferryAshley11/03/2018
Walked from Sandown railway station along the Yar River Trail, then up Shepherd's Lane from Heasley Manor Farm. Opposite where the bridleway meets the cross island road is a gate overgrown with brambles. This gives access to the summit field. Walk continued to Ashey Down.Sprog25/08/2017

Parked across the Downland Way in the Newport Shute opposite. Just 140 ft away, but as others have reported, a busy road, a steep bank of bramble and thorn and a double stranded barbed wire fence at the top deter access.Newton Maximus06/12/2015
From the Garlic Shop then drove past it at high speed.Play2End08/06/2015
As CB - there's room for one vehicle by Water Board Compound to W then a pleasant walk up the ridge.Chris Peart30/06/2014
Parking difficult on this fast cross-island road with no verges. Stopped in the smaller side road that goes off E towards pottery centre. Walked back up road then straight up near-vertical bramble covered embankment, over b/w fence and on to hill summit. Trig pillar enclosed in high security fencing along with other solar-powered electronic kit.jonglew10/05/2014
First of day after morning ferry. Parked in gateway to East, not possible to stop on road closet to trig. QUickly up the hill to not bother the farmer. Trig inside odd fenced compound, reason?nordicstar14/04/2014
You can touch the trig through the fence.jimbloomer03/03/2014
P at gate 300m west of trig. Through field and wandered around the enclosure in which the trig now stands.chrisbien21/04/2013
Busy road so parked just off it by bridle path marked to west (to Combley Farm). There is a bridle path alongside the road and took this to the gate to the west (about level with the D of Down). Up to top. Cabe reckons top is just past the summit photo.simon and co22/02/2013
No Problem Parking at the Field Gate at SZ544872. However the trig point is now surrounded by a viscious rail fence guarding electronics and some sort of radio transmitter.GordonAdshead04/08/2012
Over locked gates onto grass with horses and two more gates to find the column 2480, surrounded by 8' iron barricade (water board). Column can be touched and FB number read through the bars.arranc13/02/2012
No need to get involved in hedgerow antics. Used the gate to the SW - opposite the bridleway from Arreton.Martin R23/08/2011
Climbed while staying in Ventnor.Man of Kernow102/05/2010

Got off lightly compared to others - pulled up in field access about 0.25 miles to the west, and made a quick dash across a grassy field (no fences) that had clearly just been used for parking for a public event. Fantastic 360 degree views.wheresthepath23/09/2009
Brave person to scramble the 20m or so from the road - THICK brambles. Park to E or W and easy fields.destaylor13/12/2008
It is behind a difficult to penetrate hedge on a busy road. The trig point is slightly concealed between two fields.clivevilla27/04/2008
Eventually found a precarious way up the slope near the road junction, but it is much better to try for a fence crossing further E or W. This unclassified road takes a lot of traffic!Smudge01/03/2008
Concur below no parking at the closest point and a nasty wide bit of scrubby slope prevent a park and dashRhayader_wander07/02/2008
Fifth HuMP of six on day off from FMD Guildford, wall to wall sunshine. Best done from west by parking next to Southern Water unit close to bridleway, then walk across 2 fields to trig point over barbed wire fence near hedge.Dugswell204/10/2007
dullish ar/pasture summit. e.g. from farm tk to E: not feasible direct from rd to S RHW09/08/2003
Day trip / adventure by hovercraft and using local buses and legs linking the 2 island Marilyns and 4 'Clems'. Nasty long narrow busy road walk /rush from west in failing light for this last hill of my day.Chris Pearson29/10/2002
