Park just North of Churnsike Lodge on the forestry road. Now the journey starts. A long ride in on the forestry roads. some good others have not been used for a while. Make sure you stop at each junction to check your route. as lot of the junctions are not on the map. Bike to the end of the extended road at 6492-8103. This is where the going gets tough and confusing, compass bearings needed, but in some cases detours are unavoidable. The so called firebreaks are all overgrown, with a lot of determination battle your way to the edge of the forest. A faint path goes to Humble Hill then back along the forest edge to Black Knowe. Return back to the so called fire break and battle back through the mire to the bikes. Heaven. Good Night.smocks and denims07/03/2024
From Churnsike Lodge, using my bike on the forest roads. The stretch from the quarry to the trig was every bit as awful as I'd anticipated, a slow flounder through heather and spongy moss tussocks. The summit gave me the satisfaction of having completed the Solway watershed but any elation was completely quashed by the thought of the return journeyColin Crawford09/01/2024
With Jo, from Churnsike Lodge. On a hot, sunny day got as far as The Knares and called it a day. Might try again if the moor has been set alight or an ATV track appears.amblerbob10/07/2022
Cycled from Calvert NY663-859 to Story`s Gairs. Firebreak out onto open moorland. Then just a case of head down and keep going. Pleased to get back to the bike for quick cycle down to CalvertAndrew Simmons20/04/2022
Room for a car at Churnsike Lodge to SSE. Easy forest roads to quarry SSE of top. Then a long, energy sapping trudge across a km+ of thick heather and grass, first to corner of forest, then followed forest edge then > Black Knowe. On the plus side, it hasn't been ploughed for forestry and dry underfoot despite a wet month. Peat hags S of TP so stick to forest edge to avoid them. Returned to forest roads and continued E to Chirdon Hope, then S > Muckle Samuel's Crags. Continued along forest roads to Churnsike Lodge.JohnR30/05/2021
From Sighty Crag. Followed the wrong line of fence posts (unmarked on 1:25000 map) and ended up at Gill Pike in the most challenging terrain imaginable. Slowly retraced my steps and followed the right fence but ascended Black Knowe in mist and darkness, virtually feeling my way to the summit in energy sapping heather and bog. Hardly ever been so glad to fing a trig. Quick snack then more tedious descent than expected to old quarry (glad of that 1:25000 map). Very hard day.Wycombe Wanderer17/12/2019
Entered the forest road system at NY 6614 8645 (no gate). Drove down to NY 6266 8253. Walked the 500m curving fire break, then took a direct line over rough heather moorland. Wandered over to Humble Hill on the way back as OS give it as only 1m lower. Just under 2 hr round trip.jonglew02/11/2019
From Churnsike. Final mile pathless after leaving track a little west of the quarry. First 800m hard going, then not too bad. Return same way.mae08/07/2017
Good parking by bridge at Churnsike. Bike to quarry then 1.5km over the tall heather.jimbloomer03/07/2017
Forest road from Calvert Trust, parked at NY 6305.8312. Three firebreaks due S reach moor at 6307.8200 then diagonally SE to trig, grough going!Aye Jimmy30/09/2016
From the south in the mist. Glad to have dog for company.peebs24/11/2014
Parked at Churnsike Lodge, verge side parking available at the end of the public road. Fast walk along well maintained forest tracks to the old quarry at 649798 then the fun starts. No semblance of any tracks whatsoever to the summit. Just grit your teeth and head north. In a way it makes sense to take in Sighty Crags as well. Although a 2.5 mile further slog through virgin, strength sapping heather and bog, you can return to Churnsike on a good forestry road if you head south east to the firebreak just west of Jamie's Lodge (623798). A 12 mile round trip .... 7 miles on tracks, 5 miles of hell!moorsman19/08/2013
Probably the hardest work I've ever expended to climb a sub 500m hill. Cycled from Calvert Trust car park through fresh snow to firebreak north of trig. Followed break straight up hill (second half not shown on map and headed for Long Sal currick which is visible well before trig appears. Hard work through peat hagscovered in drfiting snow. With my dad.andy13/03/2013
