| We followed the Cateran mini-trail marked footpath from Kirkmichael to Ashintully Castle and about another 1/2 km beyond. Once past the last plantation there was an easy line SE up to and through the woods skirting Creag nam Brataichean, a handy small gate allowing relatively easy passage through an initial top-wired stone wall. Once at the top we reversed back through the pleasant woodland and over to the south flank of Cnoc an Daimh, where intermittent grass tracks led to the summit. Cnoc a' Chaorainn and Cnoc Meadhon swiftly followed, then it was a pretty easy traverse over good ground to Barr Salachaidh. Going due south took us to a stone track, which enabled easy ascents of both Menachban and Whitefield Hill, the former having some ancient fort-like walls now under turf across its summit. A visit to the ruins of Whitefield Castle was a bonus on our route home, which was a 5 hour round in total. | summitter | 28/02/2021 |
