More or less the same route as @clivevilla. Footpath is directly opposite the layby so it's quite handy to get up onto the open ground reasonably quick.

Parked in the layby at 00978 11912, up the fp opposite which soon becomes a track before emerging onto higher ground where there are various paths going the right direction to the top of Garn Ddu.
