From Eskdale YH, a circuit of Crook Crag, Green Crag, White How, Great Worm Crag, Gate Crag and 5 sundry others.PGCE14/08/2023
From the Esk. The ladder stile is well to the right (west) of the RoW shown on the map. The path then leads to a squeeze stile. Above this is an old mine. This goes in quite steeply and it is noticeable for all the sticky red clay on the bottom. Then there is an easy gully and a narrower groove to the top.Alan Moore31/01/2023
4/16 Beautiful spring morning with blue skies, no wind and temps to head to 18 degrees. Grateful for the morning shade as I ascended steeply alongside Birker Force -glad of the studs on my fell shoes for the grip. Lots of lesser know minor humps, bumps and rocky tops jumbled across this high sloping plateau - many on various lists which I've linked on previous outings -enjoying the navigation and route choice. Lesser travelled route now to reach Smithy Mire via lonely Whincop farm and over Green Knott picking up sheep trods where possible and trying to avoid the scratchy dead bracken -sore on my bare legs.Chris Pearson26/03/2022
Revisit via Great Arming HowDave Geere11/02/2022
Came across Foxbield Moss from Crook Crag. I first visited the crag to the west, Great Arming How. Wind, Sun, Rain & Rainbows. Waded the narrow but calf-deep beck to rejoin the path back to Low Birker. Solo.Dangerous Dave19/09/2021
From Dalegarth Carpark. Nice once you get above the boggy sectionconanharrod21/02/2021
4/4 Parked Dalegarth Station, down to the Church and along riverside path picking up Doctor Bridge Path. A footpath heads off North over the shoulder of Dalegarth How from which easy access to summit. Back to riverside path same way then along to Hodge How, again a path signed to Eel Tarn takes you onto shoulder of this easy hill. Back down and over Doctor Bridge then turn immediate right continue over cattle grid to find opening into the woods of Crag Coppice and wind up to summit of here. From here we excited bottom SE corner of woods and headed East for two fields then South West over last field to find stile in wall onto open fell to join the footpath rising up using old pony sled mining track (great path). As soon as it levels head due West along the cliffs to arrive at Gate Crag, crossing the Birker Force beck using stepping stones. Then we came largely west, contouring to reach bridleway through Whincop farm and worked round to descend through Stanley Gill Waterfall. A lonickywood113/10/2020
From Great Whinscale. Avoided most of the bog of despair by using path to east. Some map-reading confusion led to a tedious and dangerous descent to the north in fading light then a couple of hundred horrible metres west along the wall to hit the footpath and straightforward from then on. Excellent and deserved pint at the Hard Knott Bar. A good day apart from the descent but all's well that ends well.Wycombe Wanderer30/11/2019
From small car park at end of lane at NY 17113 00303. Dalegarth How > Hodge How > Crag Coppice > Gate Crag.David Gradwell09/06/2019
The footpath starting from behind the small lake does exist but the ladder stile is slightly in variance to the OS map .position .. it is a short distance further west. A small path heads up to a squeezer stile. After this, either follow the intermittent RoW or, as I did, after crossing the wall, look for the wall which follows the gully straight up to the summit. A steep climb but with a path most of the way and leading almost directly to the summit.moorsman08/05/2019
Green lichenous cairn in tussocky bog and outcropping rock in low cloud and rain- First hill of group walk from Eskdale YH.Others not impressed!Denise 28/12/2018
Cloudy/wet walk over tumps and the wainwright, Green Crag. Cloud lifted as we came down the valleyJoel45128/12/2018
From Doctor Bridge, path then wet moorland in mist and rain. Summit has 2 lichenous rock outcrops ~50m apart and of similar height, but too misty to differentiate by Abney. The most SE outcrop is topped by small cairn. With Denise, Graham, Sarah, Tony M, Joel, Fran, Jenny, Tamsin & Jess.RichardM28/12/2018
From Trough House Bridge CP (free), via bridge at NY 173002, then little used path to stile at SD 1782099427. Then open country via Hartley Crag - the wall between Hartley Crag and Great Ctrag is delapidated, providing many crossing points.Isbjorn09/12/2018
On a round of 6 hills from Woolpack car park. Impressive looking hill from the approach from the WSW after bit of a circuitous track to cross the Esk, on a new bridge not marked on my map. On to Kepple Crag.jonglew18/12/2017
From parking nr Beckfoot station, last of the day in last of the light. Up the track to gain height then rising contour to collect peak, back same way with headtorch.nordicstar05/12/2017
Hodge How > Dalegarth How > Crag Coppice > Gate Crag from GR: NY 18870 00916ronaldo33329/10/2017
From Doctor Bridge. Mining track weaves uphill from Low Birker and then levels out above the stepping stones above Birker Force. Splendid Hill. Parking at Dr Br.jimbloomer14/03/2016
Accent from Trough house bridge, up a rather indistinct and little used path to the east of Stanley Gyll. Gets boggy on the level to the step stile, but once beyond it rises steeply on good dry turf. A terrific scramble is available after the gap between Hartley Crag and Gate Crag. Descent via the Green Crag peat track.Karmakarl12/02/2016
Returning to Eskdale from Great Whinscale, the boggy section no problem in the dry weather. Twin summits. Fine views from above of the Gate Crag cliffs and waterfall on the way back to the valley.Aye Jimmy10/06/2015
