A lovely lunch in the Brown Horse Inn at Winster worked off with a walk up to Cat Crag and Scott Howe. Initially up the minor road towards Knipe Tarn, heading off-road to Cat Crag once a field gate NW of the summit is reached. Lots of bracken over to Bow Mabble Breast, but much easier once on the ROW and track towards Scott Howe. Returned via the A5074. | summitter | 08/10/2023 |
Parked and walked as suggested by moorsman.Magnificent views today-amazing for such a low hill. | catman | 24/05/2023 |
From FP to south. Quite rough country. Saw 2 roe deer meet top | trimarc2 | 01/02/2023 |
Parking in the roadside layby 300m SE of the pub at Winster. There is a public footpath signposted through a gate off the layby. DO NOT TAKE IT. You require the bridleway a short distance further along the road. From here a good track leads NE across rough fell. After a short distance an obvious track leads upwards, almost up to the summit. The top is the closest bump to the wall, not the obvious one a short distance away. | moorsman | 22/09/2022 |
After Cat Crag. Nice summit then straight back down to road | Alan Caine | 03/06/2022 |
Parked in lay-by then BW up to track which led almost to the top, came back down more directly to road on path. | PeterD | 23/12/2021 |
From the layby north of the junction gate up past bird feeders to the top. | robertphillips | 08/10/2020 |
Parked at the large layby/ old bus stop on the A5074 and walked up the lane to the gate. Field track leads the way. Was expecting to have to scale a wall or go through a gate out of the OAL but found the boundary wall was completely ruined so no trouble getting to the summit. | RowanP | 18/03/2020 |
From Brown Horse in Winster Valley, Cat Crag then down to rhs of house with its own Lake!!, to minor road, along the BOAT, turn up into field when it levels via barbed wire duck under, then Undermill Beck Common, Easy down and across to Capple Barrow from this side, no need to get into conflict with the Golf course, then back via Gilpin Farm to pick up footpaths and bridleways up to Hart Howe, direct across with open gates onto Lords Lot. Then directly down into the Gilpin Valley, to pick up the footpath from Foxhole Bank (house) to reach Scott Howe, then back over directly west to pick up bridleway almost back to the pub. A nice route with do'able off piste bits! | nickywood1 | 23/03/2019 |
Field gate at SD 4233 9266, room for a car. Quad track leads off to near the top. | jonglew | 25/10/2018 |
Straightforward from SW. | Wycombe Wanderer | 07/10/2018 |
Parked by the start of the footpath at a wall style, walked up through the Open Access land and crossed to the high point over a wire hurdle. Descent back to a gate on the lane is unimpeded. This would be the best way of ascent. | JohnW | 23/03/2018 |
Approached from SE via bridleway from Foxhole Bank. Just over the crest crossed the wall through a wired gate. Easy ascent, through gorse at first but latterly grass. Summit wall crossed easily at hurdle. Easy grass descent in access land. | Moorponder | 04/04/2017 |

Final one of the day, the mud in the lane near finished me off. Nice grassy top but limited view in the gloom | nordicstar | 28/09/2016 |
Parked on very rough verge near gate to SE at SD 42297 92682 then as Aye Jimmy. | David Gradwell | 25/04/2016 |
2 of 6 Tumps on a circular 3hr run from Bowness before 10.00 am. Paths. short grass and gates up from Winster-all very easy -although waterlogged mushy / slippery ground, - my innovate trail shoes just about getting a grip. Proper fell running shoes (eg Walshes) with studs would have been better-esp. on downhills. Wet feet as expected but wool socks kept feet warm. | Chris Pearson | 08/01/2016 |
From NW, with Cat Crag | RHW | 18/04/2015 |
Gate and track from just NW of Brackenrigg. Track very wet at start, churned up by cattle. Delightful summit. | Aye Jimmy | 27/02/2015 |
