| The highest point is part of a working farm with no public access. I went up from the Wettonmill side and though the NT have provided lots of stiles they don't give access to the highest point. I went down the Ladyside Farm side and spoke to the farmer. He was perfectly pleasant but did point out that I was trespassing. | Started from Weag's Bridge after a fine porridge and tea camper van brekky. Along to Thor's Cave (v.impressive) then rejoined Manifold Way to Wettonmill. Up through NT Ossoms Hill woodland and onto grazing fields. Slight detour to the summit then into Grindon for 2nd breakfast. ROW to Saucefield Farm and Lee House footbridge. Muddy, narrow, indistinct in places climb to Farwell Lane then much easier trek along Soles Hollow ROW, incorporating an up and down to Soles Hill. returned back to camper via Manifold Way. | Parked near church at Grindon and followed footpath to bottom of hill. The obvious track on the ground has 'Farm Access Only' written at its entrance but slightly further north the track that can be seen on the OS map has a permissive access map at the start. | IMPORTANT. The whole of the hill is owned by the National Trust and has dedicated public access. No need to seek permission from anyone. All walls have stiles or gates and many locals use it regularly. Walk from Wetton Mill (tea shop and cafe) has stiles over every wall and presents no problems. | moorsman | 09/03/2018 |

| 2nd hill of the day on a circular Walk with my daughter Katherine from Wetton village. We Climbed past the Wetton hills to get to Ecton hill and then dropped down to Wetton mill tearoom for sustenance before climbing the footpath that climbs up the flanks of Ossom hill. Once past a herd of cows We Followed the wall up to the wall that then goes All the way to the top. I Climbed over the gate to check both sides. | From Grindon church then straight up the obvious track with fingers crossed not to be challenged(no ROW) for 2 fields passing a St George flag half way(?). Nobody in sight at the farm. The same dustbin lorry that had blocked the road an hour ago now forced me off the track as it accelerated up the steep track behind me whilst walking back to Grindon.The severe winter of 1947 brought particular hardship for moorlands villages like Grindon. | Parked on grass verge on minor road to SW at SK 08677 54789. This Tump looks private on the map but the hill is actually on National Trust land. The required track at the end of the minor road has a sign saying FARM ACCESS ONLY but the farmer was nearby on his tractor and we were granted permission to use the track and visit the summit with strict orders not to go into the field on the other side of the wall where there were lambs and sheep. It was fortunate the highest ground is on the west of the wall so we didn't to to climb over, not that we would after promising the farmer! | David Gradwell | 31/03/2015 |
