Second visit. The summit itself is inside a walled garden making access difficut on non-opening days. The only reachable point is on the outside of the wall, itself very difficult to access unseen. However, those in a hurry can access the gardens on one of the open days for a small sum. This leads you directly to the summit point inside the wall. If you are not in a hurry, take, like I did, the house tour. The volunteers leading them are excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. Polish this off with tea in the cafe. It really is a shame, as the house is so wonderful, to do an in and out of just the walled garden. Good view from the ramparts.moorsman14/06/2023
Drove up and parked on the grass in front of Hoghton Tower, along with the many other visitors. Nobody in the ticket office, but equally no access to the gardens which were closed. So went up to the top courtyard, which must be just as high as the lawn on the other side of the buildingsilveracorn_alan03/12/2022

The Tower and gardens reopened today after 4:5 months of lockdown. Welcomed in person by the very charming owner, Sir Bernard de Hoghton , as all the staff smiled at the return of customers. We cautiously only visited the gardens but will return in better times for a look round the very interesting Hall.Campbell Singer30/07/2020
Impressive hall and surroundings. Worth a further visit. Met Sir Bernard de Hoghton as we made our entrance to the courtyard.Barbara Singer30/07/2020

At the end of an interesting 8 mile circuit of the hill. £2.20 for grounds admission, but I arrived about 4pm (shuts at 5pm) and there was nobody to take my money.Nick Caunt10/09/2018

Roadside parking (SD 6194 2681). Easy wall at SD 6202 2658, then up through woodland, round W and S sides of property to access gardens at SD 6235 2640. Although closed at least 2 properties are lived in and were occupied, so stealth mode required. HP seemed to be far NE corner of lawns. With Carole Engel on a Christmas day round of 13 hills and a pile of pillars.jonglew25/12/2017
Over wall at path junction to NW with stile and fencing to help SD 620 265. Careful walk round front of walled area to south of top to climb low wall at SD 623 263 and up thru' woods to gate into garden areacarole engel25/12/2017
With Jo, whilst visiting Hoghton Tower on a dull, wet day. Take the word of others that the summit is where indicated.amblerbob19/10/2017
2nd hill of 5 on a route from Mill hill station to Chorley climbing to Bog Bank 1st continuing via Broken stone rd, Witton Weavers way climbing steeply up near viaduct through Rhododendron jungle to High Wall with Yew trees. Was contemplating climbing over but walked around and wall height lower enough to haul myself over to explore summit on lawn. Climbed steps past Private sign to parapet withg great views too! Closed today. Walked around tower and walked down long drive to take fp to Ridley green where I had soup and a cappuccino.Dazingdale16/09/2017

house and gardens closed today so we walked round the back, not sure if we should be there, I think there was some filming going on insidebardolph05/02/2017
The grounds were open so I walked up to the house by the long main drive. Quite an impressive abode and well worth a look around.Jake99427/11/2016

Visit to Hoghton Tower, and took in Wilderness Garden to rear via path to north of house: summit somewhere there! Impressive view down from the house along the drive towards Southport, used by the Luftwaffe in WW2 as a guide for their bombers to hit Liverpool Docks (yes I took in the tour)!JOHNS01/08/2016
Beautiful Good Friday walk from Riley Green. Met the Lord of the Manor as we left down the drive (which you're not supposed to do!). He was very friendly though, and I will go back to have a look round when it opens for the summer season. The Royal Oak in Riley Green is a great place to eat afterwards.Lazylizzie25/03/2016
From nnw, late Fri eve a bit of an adventure. Folks may be intrigued to find set of footprints in snow around NE corner of lawnRHW04/03/2016
Paid £2 to visit the grounds. Impossible to say which is the highest point of the Wilderness Garden.ngthack04/10/2015
Open for Farmers' Market Day, only £1 to park. Tours of grounds not taking place but ways can be found to the snowy summit lawn... 'Bleak House' might have been a better name today.Aye Jimmy18/01/2015
From the large visitor car park. Normally £2.20 to visit the gardens (only way of reaching the highest point) but today there was a falconry display and it cost £4 each for me and my dear wife. The summit is the lawn on the first walled garden you enter (Wilderness Garden). The lawn is quite big and very flat so settled for visiting the 179m 10k geograph spot height at the southeast corner of the lawn at SD 62356 26419. Maybe higher ground somewhere on the lawn but it would need some finding especially as you are requested to keep to the walkways and not wander onto the grass. Also payed for a tour of the house for my wife's benefit but actually quite enjoyed it.David Gradwell06/07/2014

Parked near the ruined chapel over the railway bridge then through the woods and around to the front approach to Hoghton Tower and a good explore around what is not private property including gardens. It was the Motorcycle Sprint Event today. An eighth of a mile in around 7 seconds. Will book a Hoghton Tower tour on a rainy day.Dugswell214/07/2013
