Good views all round from here. | summitsup | 30/10/2021 |
short walk from road to the N | JK | 04/06/2021 |
Grassy pasture under fizzing electrical pylon. Lumpy levelish area with various possible HPs to east of Delamere Way, from which it is easily accessible. | Denise | 29/11/2020 |
From path to W. Horse pasture. Visited all 3 potential high points, unable to differentiate by Abney but I slightly favored the grassed over outcropping rock to E of the pylon. | RichardM | 29/11/2020 |
Parked on grass verge by crossroads to N. at SJ 5226 7411 - Along road to fingerpost & then S. along narrow RoW for about 150m - Easily over wire fence alongside metal field gate & then up to unmarked summit. Also visited area by pylon & area to W. which looked as high. (S) | gerrybowes | 21/11/2020 |
Parked at road junction to the north. No animals in the field! Solo. | bolton | 07/11/2020 |
Parking possible on Bushells Road to the north. Very difficult summit access from this track from the west. Instead go through the first fieldgate and head directly upwards across the field to the open summit. | moorsman | 05/03/2020 |
Walked up from the crossroads where we parked in drizzle and mist on a Friday evening after swimming at Hatchmere. Strangely, there was no-one about. The overhead pylon was very noisy. With Mart. | John Eley | 07/06/2019 |
No embarrassing drama thankfully unlike tumpawumpa two months ago. Same short route from N along fp (Delamere Way) to gain pasture. I did have a drama way back on my first orienteering event as a 13 yr old schoolboy in Delamere Forest which this hill abuts. I can remember not being able to find the flags, losing all sense of where I was and having my first taste of the impossibility of trying to push through small dense Christmas trees. A great adventure! | Chris Pearson | 29/03/2019 |
A true tumping disaster with Nwormgage. Found our route to the highpoint, whilst in muddy field considering how we would navigate through 6 inquisitive horses, I became aware of a herd of cows in the road about to be directed into our (not ROW) field! We ran back but the cows just beat us, the farmer advised us to stay put. Quite embarrassing being caught with your pants down like this by 4 disgruntled farmers. It seems the cows weren't even meant to be going into that field, but had followed us in... We quickly got out of there and went for lunch at Travellers Rest in Frodsham, where the food and booze were a bit poor, but the barmaid was nice and enquired as to what we were doing in the area. It was hard to explain. | tumpawumpa | 03/01/2019 |
From Bushells Lane. RoW due S initially then across a rough, partially gorsey, hillside paddock to base of a pylon. | jonglew | 23/11/2018 |
From north like others. | Moorponder | 18/06/2018 |
Along narrow path from North, then easily over fence.Didn't stay long at top,as a horse took a shine to me! | catman | 02/02/2018 |
Parked at start of footpath in fairly wide driveway at 52046 73632, up driveway, left along path then over a couple of easy fences the final short distance to the top. | clivevilla | 30/11/2017 |
I parked on the road to the north then used the very narrow RoW. Summit area unexciting, marked by pylon line and horse jumps | Colin Crawford | 06/10/2017 |
Another forgettable one.. parked at entrance to Birch Hill Cottages and ran up. Says it all if i managed to run it!
Pylons dominate the view. | stig_nest | 23/07/2017 |

4th hill of 6 today on a route from Tarporley to Helsby station via Summerhouse Bank, High Billinge and Pale Heights, dropping down from track heading North to join Sandstone trail near Eddisbury lodge and followed this through Delamere forest (stopping for lunch on a bench)branching off on a forest track at SJ534722 heading NW past Eddisbury Way onto New Pale road, also hosting the Delamere Way, East and then North on a bridleway but climbed over fence to explore summit, used for horseriding, 158m on Gps, woods to South explored but nothing higher 65 m South however it did look just as high if not higher at SJ525733 but I didn't have time to explore, the landowner has dropped some large rocks nearby so climbed those too before dropping onto bridleway to continue to Woodhouse hill. | Dazingdale | 04/03/2017 |
Parked: Junction of start of P/F and New Pale Road SJ 52046 73632. The summit field is a horses playground, luckily none out in the fog. | David Evans | 07/01/2017 |
Up short cul de sac to no.1 Birch cottages, left along r.o.w over fence under pylons to high point. | vegibagger | 27/07/2016 |
Short walk up footpath then off-piste to bag mound near pylon. | Dugswell2 | 22/02/2016 |
Verge parking in road to SW, lane past houses to sharp left turn through new gate, f/p then up field. Bump under overhead cables but field to S may be as high. | Aye Jimmy | 08/01/2016 |
Parked in crown green bowling club c/p on Manley Road. Up the Birch Hill houses drive. Along footpath for 100m to end of new fence. Then straight up. | ngthack | 16/12/2015 |
Made the ascent from Manley Road walking along footpath and then New Pale Road before turning up the lane below the summit - the final footpath was blocked by a local residents horse wagon but easily skirted around to access the stile - a well trodden trail lead up to the summit - despite the wet weather the views in all directions were superb - the remaing part of the trail off the hill is becoming overgrown but passable | Littleowl1 | 08/07/2015 |
Run from Helsby to Birch Hill. Access is up what looks like someones drive but there is a small fence to pop over and the summit is at top of hill. No marking to say its there. Great spot all the same. Views over Cheshire countryside. | Chris920 | 04/10/2014 |
Most unsatisfactory top under power lines. | PeteF | 27/10/2013 |
P start of lane SW of hill. | chrisbien | 08/10/2013 |
From Helsby via Helsby Hill. Met some friendly cows atop. The roads around here are unpleasant to walk along, some people drive far to fast for comfort. | Jake994 | 11/12/2010 |
This is one of many visits. Pity about the pylons but worth it for the view. Easily accessible from Manley FP 11 that runs just below the summit to the west. I would estimate the summit as SJ 5219 7380. | mikh43 | 28/10/2007 |
pleasant view. from stile at 522737 | RHW | 19/01/2002 |
In days around Frodsham, walked/ran/cycled the area and hill tops | nordicstar | 10/06/2001 |
I became very ill, the day I came here, with pleurisy and meningitis (that lead to permanent deafness of my left ear). So, no fond remembrances about Birch Hill | Martin R | 01/05/1975 |
