From the car park at 476942. South past Starr and to end of forest roads to NE of Cairnmawhannel. Tough going from there until easy climb over Hoodens Hill and then easy enough walk to Mullwharchar. Great views on a fine day. Return same way in bright conditions although very wet through through long grass. 7.5 hours and 12.6 miles solo. | bolton | 27/08/2022 |
Parked at Bruce's Stone car park in Glen Trool, walked up to Loch Valley, around the west side of Loch Neldricken then stopped at a sandy beach on Loch Enoch for lunch. Up Mullwharchar first, then south to Dungeon Hill and on to Craignaw. Rough descent over lots of grass tussocks, to join a path on east side of Loch Neldricken, then rejoined the outward route at Loch Valley, when I was caught in a heavy shower, dry for rest of day, 09:50hrs all in. | chillyman8 | 19/08/2022 |
Up from Loch Trool via the Gairland Burn Route, to the NE of Loch Enoch and straight up Mullwharchar, 4.5 hrs. Returned by the west side of Loch Enoch then SW along by the Buchan burn to Culsharg and down the Merrick path. 7.5 hrs. Last Donald. | Alan | 18/07/2022 |
From Bruce's stone car park on a Two day walk wild camping on the shores of Loch Enoch. Following the Gairland burn route up to Loch Neldricken from here the route took in Craig Neldricken, Craignaw, Craignairny and Dungeon hill before descending to Loch Enoch to pitch the tent. Day Two involved climbing Mullwarchar and Hoodens hill returning via the West side of Loch Enoch where I was able to follow a faint path to the Buchan burn and onto the ruin of Culsharg Bothy finally heading south to the car park. Seventeen mile with 4350ft of ascent. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 14/07/2022 |
From Carrick Lane CP, along the forest track past Starr, taking the right branch leading to the NE flank of Craigmawhannal. Over the summit and two westerly tops, through a thin strip of forestry to the trod leading up the ridge of Hoodens Hill and down to two lochans in the col N of Mullwharchar. Up bouldery slopes to the summit, returning the same way, except that I took an ATV track over the NE shoulder of Craigmawhannal. Magnificent surroundings, but not easy walking. | Nick Down1 | 09/04/2022 |
Parked NX477941 locked gate to forest drive. Along forest track to almost S end of Loch Doon where another forest track (not on 1/50k) heads up SW, left fork at junction leads to N ridge of Mullwharchar. 9 hour day. | rogreeves | 31/03/2022 |
From Dungeon Hill then back down around the E side of Loch Enoch with its idyllic white beaches looking positively tropical in the sunshine - and up Creag Neldricken. Rough country. | sclater | 20/03/2022 |
Came up from Backhill of Bush via the Nick of the Dungeon. There used to be access through the woods and across the moor from the bothy but all has changed due to forest felling and replanting. There may be newer routes but lacking local knowledge, I struggled indeed | Colin Crawford | 25/08/2021 |
Solo. Parked at Craigencallie. Track walk in to southern end of Craignaw (645m), up onto ridge and along to summit. Loch Enoch. Then up Mullwarchar (692m). Late decision to then summit Craignairny (595m) and Dungeon Hill (620m) due to beautiful evening sun, then a tricky descent and across to Back Hill of Bush. Track return. | meltdiceburg | 24/08/2021 |
Parked at Craigencallie mid afternoon. Biked to Backhill o Bush and climbed Craignaw direct. Then onto Craignairny, down to Loch Enoch and up to Mullwharchar. Bivvied out at the summit - what a place. Early start the next day. Took in Dungeon Hill before descending to Backhill o Bush and thenbike back to Craigencallie. | jigglybones | 10/07/2021 |
A circuit of Merrick, Kirriereoch Hill, Mullwharchar and Craignaw from Bruce's Stone Car Park. Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2021/06/a-circuit-of-four-tops-on-range-of.html | Gayle | 12/06/2021 |

Merrick Ridge from Carrick Forest to Glen Trool 31km/ 1660m ascent, 10hrs 10min | Huwel | 26/02/2021 |
Parked in pull-in about 170m SE of track junction at NX 4578 9342 & up Hoodens Hill. From Hoodens Hill, S. down trod but this disappeared in long grass before reaching col - On climb to the summit rock just an occasional trod; nevertheless, terrain is pretty decent with little heather or tussock so long grass not too much of a problem. Returned same way. (S) | gerrybowes | 15/07/2020 |
As part of overnighter from Glentrool. Showers, windy. Stashed rucksack at bottom. | Rounsfell | 10/07/2020 |
A tough walk for January, even after driving along the logging road starting at the end of Carrick Lane to park at 478 903. No gates. W on the logging road over a bridge, then soggy ATV track to bridge over Gala Lane. ATV track continues wetly and expires at a cross fire break. Disgusting wet path through tussocks S along this then head uphill on an equally vile path which wanders up towards Hoodens Hill. Leave your water wings at the base of the ridge and climb Hoodens on a steep but good path. The summit ridge goes on for ever over various bumps. Down on tussocky grass to the lochans at the col then up Mullwharchar, first onto a wide shelf, then hacking up to the top on nice snow, soooo easy after the struggles below. Back the same way. Unsure if the bogs are any better when frozen (as on the way out) than thawed (on the way back). | Gill | 19/01/2020 |
Start from Grid 424916 small parking area, follow the track to the bothy Tunskeen. cross rough ground to Mullwharchar, return roughly the same route, last Donald. | smocks and denims | 09/11/2019 |
From Bruce's Stone up Merrick usual route then down to Loch Enoch (difficult burn crossing) and up Mulwharchar through long clinging grass. Over to Dungeon Hill in similar wet conditions then to Craignairny. Descended to south shore of Loch Enoch where we found the remains of the Whitley bomber from 1940 then down 'path' to track and back via bothy to the car. Hardest day I've had on the hill since my early Munro bagging (pre paths). | SS | 07/09/2019 |
3/6 Buchan Hill, Craig Neldricken, Mullwharchar, Dungeon Hill, Craignairny and Craignaw on Donald Completion Day with Ian, Caroline and Barry. Great 10 hour day, and successful project. | nickywood1 | 14/07/2019 |
From Bruces Stone CP via Lochs Valley, Neldricken and Enoch. Afterwards to Dungeon Hill and Craignaw. Long, hard day. | IanHHill | 17/05/2019 |
3rd hill of 11 on an epic traverse from the forest drive near Loch Riecawr to the minor lane leading from Caldons near Glen Trool, climbing Macaterick and Hoodens Hill continuing onto Mullwharchar, again exploring the rocky tops in the high winds. Continuing to Hooden's Hill... | Dazingdale | 11/10/2018 |
From P on Forest Drive, along track, turning L and onto second firebreak (last before track end) running SE to bridge over Elgin Lane. FK started with me but bowel problems caused him to stop at 11:05 and return to car. I continued over rough ground, traces of path, onto ridge, down after Hoodens Hill and up directly to summit of M for lunch, 13:00. Returned N but had difficulty in climbing up to HH, due to extremely high T and lightheadedness: paused on rock for five mins till head cleared. Continued along ridge and found path to descend to FK's resting cairn low down. Caught path to bridge and retraced outward route to car. Weather was too hot for exertion of hill-walking; this was one of my most demanding single Donalds. First visit, also by this route, was on 10/10/2009 with J, MB and JS. | jacobus | 25/07/2018 |
From the north part of the way on my bike. Warm and sunny with storm clouds gathering. 4hr round trip from the wee bridge. | Play2End | 09/06/2018 |
From Glentrool via Buchan Hill. | Winterfloodian | 06/06/2018 |

Camped at Loch Enoch and went up this peak seeing red deer on the way. More arduous than expected because of the boggy terrain but awesome views of the area. | John Eley | 26/08/2017 |
my last Donald | hornet | 03/06/2017 |
From Kirriereoch Hill. Descended to Loch Twachtan in fog, rain and a headwind. Weather then cleared. Contoured round to below Loch Enoch outflow, then up easy grassy / slabby slopes. | Owen B | 20/05/2017 |
From Wild Camp on Loch Enoch, Mullwharchar is fairly easy, but couldn't find a path. | Jhimmy | 07/05/2017 |
Wild camp at Loch Valley, North to Mullwharchar, on to Dungeon Hill, Craignaw and out to Glen Trool | Flatfield | 15/04/2017 |
5th of 8 hills on a 16 mile round from Bruce's Stone CP with Alex C. Initially plumped for cairn as HP, but clear enough it wasn't, just a case of picking a suitable rock from the group 30+m W. From Kirriereoch Hill (bdy), on to a fine looking Dungeon Hill. | jonglew | 09/04/2017 |
From Bruce's Stone (8:50) took good path over Benyellary to Merrick summit (in cloud, 10:55). Descended ESE to L Enoch; crossed stream at outflow; up over grass and granite slabs to Mullwharcar (12:30). Hills all clear now. Descended back to obvious crossing lower down stream; followed wall across valley bottom towards Kirriereoch. Climbed to col and then to summit boulder (14:30). Returned to col, up ridge to Merrick and down path back to car (17:20). Dry day, good views after midday. | dbb | 30/09/2016 |
Bagged on a solo backpack from Glen Trool. Camped by Loch Enoch. | Sprog | 05/06/2016 |
From Bruce's Stone cp. Over Buchan Hill & Rig of Loch Enoch. | ngthack | 20/10/2015 |
A wet and windy day in a pretty poor summer of weather was no surprise. I set off from Glen Trool and took in Craignaw, Mullwharchar, Merrick and Benyellary. I did get a bit of a view from Craignaw. The other summits well!!! This area was wild and pathless apart from the descent from Merrick. Distance 22k in 6 hours 40 minutes. | isabelle | 02/08/2015 |
Alone, from Glen Trool. | Grinner | 18/07/2015 |
From Glen Trool by the Buchan Burn, using the forest road near Culsharg to its end, fording the burn to then follow the tottering boundary wall past the Old Man of Merrick to get to Loch Enoch. Evening ascent of Mullwharcar from camp (poor ground). Reurned via Merrick and Benyellary in the mist next day. | neimcv | 03/06/2015 |
From Bruces stone CP over Merrick then down Redstone Rig to (sth) Loch Enoch. Up SW side to top. Exit via Loch Neldricken, Murder hole and Gairland Burn path. | GmacT | 17/04/2015 |

From Merrick via Loch Twachtan across Rig of Munshalloch. The 5 miles from Mullwharchar to Glen Trool was as wet and arduous as anywhere in this country! | peebs | 22/08/2012 |
W Jenx from Glen Trool CP. Grand tour of Marilyns and lesser tops to east of Merrick to finish on Craiglee. Merrick path to 255m then cross burn & over Buchan Hill > along Rig of Loch Enoch on a good path! High pt at base of Merrick East ridge and rnd Loch Enoch to climb soggy Mullwharcher, same in descent. Dissaptd as thought this would be a rocky hill. Grand spot tho. | nordicstar | 21/07/2012 |
