Nice fort. Short stroll from parking at junction to SE. | RobertP | 19/02/2024 |
Parked near trig which I wasn’t expecting to see. Short way along BW then up FP to hill fort, went to HP on ramparts and nearby natural HP. Back and then down road and up Butterdon Hill. | PeterD | 09/02/2023 |
From 7420 8881 through a long grass field then over a wall into the area of the castle. The earthworks are quite substantial and are higher than the GR which is presumably the highest natural point. | clivevilla | 22/06/2020 |
I walked to Cranbrook Castle on Uppacott Down with MAE, starting at an easy parking space at SX 7420 8881. We went on to Butterdon Hill: MAE summitted, but I was defeated by the bracken, brambles and gorse! | David Purchase | 04/10/2019 |
Walk up from Fingle Bridge on a warm overcast day. Saw plenty of Grey Squirrels, Woodpigeon’s and Pipits. There were lots of Bluebells in flower and Linnets on the summit. I visited the rampart and the area that contained the highest natural ground. Good views the scaffolding was still on Castle Drogo. | isabelle | 30/05/2019 |
Sunny walk around this summit and higher ramparts after bagging Cransbrook Castle trig point. | Dugswell2 | 29/03/2019 |
From cp at 742888. Bridleway to the top. | Moorponder | 29/06/2018 |
Path up from SE now a wide, grassy, well-maintained path. Good parking SX 7419 8881. Due to narrow lanes and parking difficulties, combined with Butterdon Hill to SE | carole engel | 27/06/2018 |
Impressive iron age earth embankments in rings. HP on grass, gorse and bracken covered embankment. Relocated trig at nearby road junction. | Denise | 21/12/2017 |
Walk up byway from Fingle Bridge then path to the large iron age hill fort. Grass with hint of gorse enclosed by ring mounds and ditches slopes gently northwards. High point on ring mound. | RichardM | 21/12/2017 |
10/11 (South Hessary Tor/Bellever Tor/Laughter Tor/Sharp Tor/Hayne Down/Pepperdon Down/Blackingstone Rock/Nattadown Common/Meldon Hill/Uppacot Down/Piddledown Common) | Fergalh | 07/10/2017 |
Apparently one of the 3840 Iron Age hill forts in Britain.(284 of them in Devon & Cornwall). Is anyone bagging them? Nice wide mown path up on day walk from Chagford with Lesley and Flook the dog.Surprised by trig in car park as had not read logs. Moved in 1993 by council from fort. Why. How much did they spend on moving it? | Chris Pearson | 08/08/2016 |
On circular walk with Butterdon Hill | Poolton123 | 14/11/2015 |
Small off-road parking area to SE at start of path. Then a traceable path through the bracken (August) which leads to an indistinguishable summit area. From here the high point could be anywhere. You can pick between the artificial ramparts or the slightly lower enclosed area. | moorsman | 19/08/2014 |
Revisited: hill fort: highest point is gorsy southern rampart. The trig pillar which used to stand there is now to the SE, near the start of the path. | RHW | 12/04/2014 |
Parking by trig point | jimbloomer | 24/02/2014 |
Here for the trig pillar which has been moved from the HP. Walked up onto Cranbrook Castle IA hillfort where the trig once stood and is the HP for the hill. | jonglew | 13/01/2014 |
