Parked at the road entrance towards Glenmanna. Walked up the road to Glenwhargen, from where a grass track heads up the glen above Glenwhargen Burn. Up a grassy flank to Whiteside once SE of Glenwhargen Craig, finding an ATV track close to the summit, which thankfully continues over the tussocky ground on to Shiel Hill. Similar ground over to Wether Hill and the aptly named Heathery Hill then E to Jarney Knowes to get onto a turbine road which helps ascend Black Rig. Something of a slog to Dunduff and back before the final summit of Cairnkinna Hill. Back to the car via the grassy slopes above Hallscaur Craig, which seems the easiest terrain when descending into Scaur Glen. 4.5hrs total. | summitter | 04/08/2023 |
Parked on the narrow grassy verge just north of Carlinstane Bridge. Took one look at the SW ridge, didn't fancy it, it looked steep, stony, heathery, possibly some difficult to avoid loose stuff. So went up the grassy slope on the west side of Carlinstane Burn to about 350m, found a sheep trod contouring to the burn, then up the other side on tussocky grass to the ridge line and easy from there. Retraced steps. | Owen B | 09/04/2023 |
Parked at the cattle grid under Hallscaur Craig at NS 769 014. Over two wooden gates to open fell. Climbed up Hallscaur Craig and then across rough ground up to the summit. Impressive summit cairn. Visited Black Rig, Jarney Knowes and Heathery Hill before returning to the cattle grid. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 24/10/2022 |
From Carlinstane Bridge via Carlinstane Burn. | Winterfloodian | 21/10/2021 |
Small paths / tracks weave up from Woodend making for a reasonably easy ascent - in October at least, perhaps rougher terrain in summer | 49pp | 12/10/2021 |
New wind farm road used from north. No turbines yet and gave quick progress. Heathery Hill out and back then over Black Rig to large cairn of Cairnkinna Hill (summit few metres away on nondescript bump). Returned same way (gift horse on wf road). | SS | 28/02/2021 |
From Glenwhargen: Whiteside -> Welltrees Tappin (for the trig pillar) -> Shiel Hill -> Heathery Hill -> Black Rig -> Cairnkinna Hill -> Dunduff -> Breconside Hill -> Cleuchead Hill -> Merkland Hill. Adrian's car waiting for us at the road by Woodend. Pleasant 19.6k round of 9 tumps. | jonglew | 28/11/2020 |
Parked opposite Woodend track. Up track passed house, over gate and followed line of woodend burn and on to ridge, hard go-ing at times or was I tired as this was day 5.Big cairn with good views. Tried to come back by ridge to Woodend, a mistake, should have reversed my outward route. 100 mins | Coinneach | 30/08/2020 |
Parked opposite track to Woodend. Detour around Woodend and then generally followed sometimes indistinct ATV track to the summit. Great views but very hot on way up. Onwards to Black Rig. Solo. | bolton | 13/08/2020 |
Climbed from just NW of Chanlockfoot, below Riddings Bank where there is parking. Then a steep climb North onto the ridge and then around the ridge to the top. | Simon Winton | 08/03/2020 |
From start of track up past Woodend to gate then in mist followed buggy track, which we occasionally lost, to Pt 359, then to gate and Pt 468. Reasonable track now to summit. | Lionel Bidwell | 24/11/2019 |
Snow and sunshine made this a great walk. Parking is not easy for the Woodend track with logging in progress and too snowy for direct ascents from Chanlockfoot, so I parked on a perfectly fine grass verge by a gate W of Carlinstane bridge. Through the gate, across the field, then over a rickety wooden gate. Straight up the W side of the burn on steep easy ground, meeting an ATV track briefly then keeping to high ground above the burn. At a feeder, cut across the hillside along a drain which contours nicely around the head of the burn to a stile, then off piste to the 475m col and up the hill. The fence along the ridge looks electric but isn't. Fine snowy views from the massive cairn. Fast descent on good snow. The ATV track goes down to a gate into the field E of Hallscaur and a gate next to the house entrance brings you to the road. | Gill | 01/02/2019 |
An awkward climb through brash and bramble from small old quarry at NS787005 to where the wall was down and so breached it at NS 7893 0044. Once there steady slow progress NNE by fence to corner gate at NS 7922 0069. Then easier NNW pver Black Hill and Burn Head to the trig pointwhivh took us 84 minutes. Operate ham radio for Summits On The Air on top on VHF. | G4OBK (Phil) | 11/12/2018 |
Parked on grass verge by Chanlockfoot at 791001 - Up Woodend track to gate N. of house - Up ridge following ATV track which passes through gate by fence junction at 392007 - From close to 488 spot height, followed another ATV track which heads NE to unmarked summit. Continued to Black Rig & Heathery Hill. (S) | gerrybowes | 01/11/2018 |
1 of 7 today. | PGCE | 25/09/2018 |
Early morning just after dawn. From small quarry/dug our layby just beyond Chanlockfoot. Easier going if cross BWF at start the very steep up to ridge on mostly grass (could be difficult if wet) to huge cairn and trigooint. About 90min round trip, no cloud and fine views. | N.Morters | 24/05/2018 |
Parked at track end leading to Woodend. Cloud came in so no visibility. Big cairn could do with AD improving. | NormanW | 19/04/2018 |
Tacked on to Merkland Hill and Dunduff. A beautiful day but I was deterred from continuing north to Shiel Hill by the deep snow filling the gaps in the tussocks | Colin Crawford | 11/12/2017 |
From parking in small quarry at 787005 went directly up behind to reach ridge - along to P488 then SW ridge to summit. | Chris Peart | 16/12/2016 |
Park 799995 at cottage. Andy invites all walkers to park in cottage grounds rather than let an accident happen outside in parking space. Just knock and ask. From there, track to Woodend and onto ridge. Partly sunny, warm, slight breeze on top, good views. | iangalbraith | 27/07/2016 |
From below Riddings Cleuch, starting at 7867 0051, up NW side of fence and directly up onto ridge. A bright and sunny morning with a cold north wind. | Topographer57 | 22/11/2015 |
Low cloud and mist made route finding interesting. The straight up route works ok. | jenx | 02/11/2015 |
With Jenx, followed recent route recorded by GmacT. Not a great line, direct as you like bit steep and lots of vegetation lower down. The fence is encountered at 380m and then turning left follow the fence posts to subsidiary top at 488m. Direct line then by compass to top through mist. Using the Holm Wood track approach and then the long ridge may well be the best option for this hill unless you like sporting routes! | nordicstar | 02/11/2015 |
Parked at NS786005 (Timber loading area)proceeded up right side of fence until style, crossed over then up to fence corner. Direct up right side of Riddings Cleuch.Pushed through fence (top electric) at 400mtr contour strainer pole. Then followed quad tracks to the summit. returned by same route. | GmacT | 20/10/2015 |
From road by Scar Water at NX 79402 99831. Then east to Druidhill Burn. | Alan Moore | 29/09/2015 |

Parked opposite new house at NX 79927 99483. Recommended parking spot opposite track to Woodend obstructs a field gate. Walked NW up lane and then took track up to Woodend. Gate into field is east of house. Then through another gate in wall to take SE ridge over Woodend Crag, then NE to summit. Onwards to Merkland Hill. With AT and JT. | Man of Kernow1 | 16/11/2013 |
Start: minor road to south west. Notes: very steep ascent directly up Carlinstane Bank. Sizeable cairn on top. | raffemeister | 18/08/2013 |
From Scaur Water at Glenmanna, descended via Carlinstane Burn gorge. | neimcv | 07/05/2013 |
Up initially steep SW ridge, 40 mins to trig. Windy & overcast but mild. On to Welltrees Tappin via Black Rig & Heathery Hill. | agentmancuso | 10/03/2012 |
From SW up a rather pleasing gill (sorry, burn) with waterfalls, then up steep hillside. Summit has a trig and enormous cairn. | Aye Jimmy | 31/03/2011 |
Revisit. Trig 10m SW of and slightly below massive partially collapsed ancient summit cairn. From SW, up fine steep spur, then snowy traverse over the 2 Donald Deweys, returning along the road. | RHW | 27/02/2010 |
Start at the path up to Woodend Farm. You can follow the ridge round to include Mote Hill and an old earthwork/fort. Stunning views of the Scaur Valley on the way up providing you walk along the SW side of Woodend Hill/Black hill ridge, rather than the Wo | borderterrier | 06/12/2009 |
Farm lane for 1 mile through 2 gates in electric fences to moor and steady plod over sheep grass to gate and rough tussock to top at 10.40. Clambered to top of massive ancient cairn. | arranc | 28/10/2002 |
