Solo. From car park at Old Kirkland. Signposted route to Vennel going round E of plantation and then via Lambing Slack to summit. | pwbellarby | 21/05/2023 |
Very quick and straightforward up and down from the cattle grid. | Owen B | 09/04/2023 |
Parked at cattlegrid opposite track on hard coarse stones. Simple walk up to summit on tussock grass once through gate and over stream. Back same way. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 19/11/2022 |
As per G0HIO. | willyross | 29/09/2022 |
Parked at the cattle grid. Stoney track leaves from here and disappears further up. Through the long grass picking up ATV track here and there. | G0HIO | 15/09/2022 |
A lovely walk from the cattle grid. One hour. With Janice. | Play2End | 19/04/2022 |
Parked near the cattle grid 1 mile before Fingland. Followed gravel track to gate and then straight up fairly near the fence - there is a path through the bracken but we kept losing it. Easy going to summit from col. Returned same route but found paths this time. | m0jla | 15/09/2021 |
Parked at end off track NE of cattle grid (NS 745 164), but on advice of visitor moved to SW side to avoid risking obstruction. Straightforward climb as described. Then headed towards Fingland to climb 13150 Knockenshag and 5056 Kirklea. Made mistake of going up to the gate attracting GOML attention. Road may be public, but land to the side is private so you can't park off the road or we will get the Police. Others have probably successfully parked before the No Parking signs, under the radar. | henryfm | 06/08/2021 |
1 of 3: From the small CP at Kirkland. Signed to the site of the old church then a clear path up Little Kirkland Hill. ATV track to the top. Hot and sunny. With Karen. | ChrisR | 22/07/2021 |
Parked just beyond the junction at 745164 (13:50) and folowed the track SW till it bent sharp right about 100m before a fence. Followed the track uphill till it swung rightwards near the crest and then made for a gate in the fence and followed a faint track to the summit. Descended more directly towards the bend in the track; no path. Back to car 15:00. Cloudy but dry. | dbb | 08/07/2021 |
Parked SW side cattle grid (NS 7454 1644). Good track half of the way, then over rough pasture. | jonglew | 13/03/2021 |
Parked by cattle grid in upper Nithsdale NS745165. Moorland uphill trudge to gate at NS736166, not too steep. Onward to trig on summit. Came down sooner and steeper on return to walk the full length of track back to car. Operated ham radio for SOTA on summit using HF Morse / Voice. | G4OBK (Phil) | 09/09/2020 |
Parked at Kirkland Farm and walked on track to Glenwharrie then through wet fields and onto ridge at sheep pens, then followed fence to minor summit and onto trig and main summit. Back same way.105 mins | Coinneach | 28/08/2020 |
A quick and easy tick from the Fingland Road. Along the grassy valley track then up a very clear grassy, partly stone-surfaced track starting just before the fence. This gives a quick climb to the ridge before it veers off towards High Knypes. A short crossing of the col towards Kirkland Hill, first through easy, well-spaced tussocks (hard ground in between them) then impressive mossy bogs with large islands to give a dry-ish crossing to arrive at a gate in the fence. An ATV track then leads to the top. The ATV track gives an equally easy route down, following the W side of the fence to a strange dip with multiple gates and fences to rejoin the outward track. | Gill | 21/01/2020 |
From the C class road at NS745164, a single track road, grass-in-the-middle, with no 'engineered' passing places - informal places to pass were few and far between. Limited parking on a rare wide bit of grass verge, just E of cattle grid. Along track, WSW, almost to fence/stream, then NNW up wide track made by a TLV, to crest of ridge. There is a wicket gate in the fence, with a sophisticated rotational mechanism for keeping the chain held in place. | Isbjorn | 28/06/2019 |
From small car park by Kirkland taking good track up to Little Kirkland Hill then ATV track to ridge. Came back by ridge and the interesting feature 'The Can'. A really pleasant ninety minutes. | SS | 27/05/2019 |
Solo trip. Drove up the lane NW from Crawick to tackle the hill from the east, rather than walking from Kirkland. | Invicta14 | 22/05/2019 |
Easy verge parking about 75 yards NE of bend at 745167. Sw to a gate, followed the fence along distinct track then directly to the summit. Solo under one hour. | bolton | 09/05/2019 |
From Kirkland, using small car park by start of wood near end of road. Track/path most of the way, climbed to top at SW end of summit ridge then along to the summit. Another bright day. | RobertP | 10/12/2018 |
Parked tight against side of track at 745164 - Along track for about 700m to metal kissing gate - Sheep trod & then ATV track up E. side of rivulet to gate/wooden fence - Over fence & along ATV track to unmarked summit & trig point. (S) | gerrybowes | 21/11/2018 |
From the E, Fingland road, just space to park at start of track. Went along this for a few 100m, then diagonally up to meet track along fence. Over a hurdle, and track continues to the summit. | Minto | 27/10/2018 |
Train from Dumfries to Kirkconnel then walk via minor road to Kirkland and Vennel. Very straightforward despite the mist. Enjoyable too. | trimarc2 | 21/08/2018 |

From cattle grid on road to Fingland (744164), along track to SW to stream, then up stream directly to summit. Easy going. Back along ridge to High Knype, then direct descent to cattle grid. Sunny with good views. | Winterfloodian | 01/05/2017 |
Signed FP from NS746165. Stay on ATV track for 90m after KG where it turns uphill to fence corner. From here it turns left to trig | carole engel | 12/09/2016 |

From south, parking at Old Kirkland. Mild, windy, intermittent showers, flooded everywhere, good views. | iangalbraith | 06/12/2015 |

Profusion of gin-traps by walls and becks in this area. Hill not very inspiring, nor were the morning midges. In fact the most exciting thing was seeing a meadow pipit chase and catch a moth then eat it. Didn't realise they were carnivores! | Aye Jimmy | 23/07/2011 |
Gloaming ascent and descent in darkness. | Man of Kernow1 | 25/09/2010 |
