The closest tump to Stonehenge ( 2 miles to the north) which is not lit up at night ( big debate in the past) or I would have seen it glowing in the distance on my dark pre-dawn ascent from east. I had planned to continue to walk the 4 miles there and back to arrive at the recommended golden hour ( dawn or dusk) to try to experience the monument with no other people there at sunrise in January which would be special. However a strong cold N wind and cold spitting rain and gloom hinted at a different adjective to golden awaiting me there, so plans shelved. Rox Hill is itself within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and has two well documented Bronze Age barrow cemeteries on the north flank ( The Lake Down Group and the Wilsford Group). Seems there are different types of barrows - pond, bell, disc, bowl). There is also a Celtic field system here the reports say - how they coped in those far off days with the same sticky chalk mud without wellies the reports do not say. | Chris Pearson | 27/01/2019 |
Parked at start of FP, but then through woods following field edge and tractor tracks to the clump and then to HP and top of reservoir for good measure. | PeterD | 11/11/2018 |
Parked at start of footpath to E - along to gate - easily through woods to corner - tramlines to Clump & reservoir. Wiltshire done at last! | Chris Peart | 30/01/2018 |
