I had planned a circular walk from Old Lodge to the north, but then it occurred to me there may be access restrictions. So I changed the start point to the Bridleway at Keepers Cottage and Three Legged Cross. On arrival I saw the bridleway was a tarmac road, albeit in a bit of a poor state. So applying Spanish bagging rules that if the road is drivable and no signs saying private - 'go for it', I decided to see how far I could get. Quite a way in the end though the road did turn to a muddy stony path, I managed to get as far as SU 44367 57041 at a track junction to nearby reservoir. Good call, the track was not suitable for a road vehicle, especially after the reservoir. Summit is not easily distinguishable though there was the very pleasant surprise to find Heavens Gate. If you get this far you have likely crossed the summit. Going back I plumped for high ground near large beech tree just off the track.mntainman17/02/2024
Because Gordon mentions a further 300m to the folly, when I think he meant 30m, it came as a surprise to find myself at the H Gate and realised I had already walked over the summit. Good advice about the parking spot, though. Just don't think you can get on the byway from the north.Martin R27/06/2023

Drove along the extremely muddy and rutted lane to the south , parked and then walked round side of field and past reservoir to indeterminate summit. Great views from Heavens Gate. Not sure if I was meant to be there but there are permissive path signs up.Campbell Singer05/01/2022
Drove along rough lane from West 233. Met Hichclere Ranger at cottage 600m along, who agreed thre was no problem parking at track start 300m S of high point Also walked another 300m NE to Heaven's Gate - a great viewpoint down to Highchere Castle.GordonAdshead16/08/2021

Fourth and final of the day. Walked over from Beacon Hill to the East. No obvious route there made for quite a detour and a much longer trip than the straight line distance between the two would suggest! Much less popular than its neighbour, but Heaven's Gate and its views made it worthwhile!lerritt16/08/2020
Walked from 3 Legs X, lay bys on lane to Crux Easton. Used the permissive access to get to HP, it was worthwhile continuing to its finish at Heaven's Gate, a remarkable folly with a fabulous view of Highclere Castle. Leisurely finish to a very good day on the downs and hills to the S of Newbury/Kingsclere.pwheeler22/07/2020
Run: Cottington's Hill -> Caveley Hill -> Beacon Hill -> Sidown Hill -> Ladle Hill -> Watership Down. Path through woods from E after dropping down off Beacon.maclrc01/03/2020

Parked in layby near Three Legged Cross and walked east along track to permissive track through Highclere Castle estate to summit area. Lovely Bluebells. The OS SH location appears lower and teh natural HP appears to be at the SW corner of the enclosed covered reservoir, although the reservoir top itself is the unnatural HP. The views of Highclere, through the nearby but lower 18th C brick gateway (Heaven's Gate) are impressive. A sign says the track is only open Easter to August but there is no gate or fence.Denise 27/04/2019
E along track from Three Legged Cross past Beech wood with superb Bluebells. Summer Walk to the impressive Heaven's Gate crosses summit area. Ground at SW corner of reservoir enclosure (SU 44427, 57495) is higher than the OS spot height.RichardM27/04/2019

From grotto. Highest point seemed nearer to Heaven's Gate to me. Had intended walking to Beacon Hill, which looked impressive through the trees but running out of daylight and the walk far from peaceful, decided to drive round.Wycombe Wanderer27/12/2016
From west, same route as Jon.PeterD13/11/2016
Just time during last hour of daylight until 6.30 pm. From west long mile each way all on tracks to brick folly (heaven's gate)with top set back a bit in wood.Radio reporting commuter traffic gridlock with M4 closed due to overturned lorry. Good plan to now go 'dark hill bagging' to delay return drive towards London as late as possible.Chris Pearson12/10/2016
Little safe parking room at Three Leg Cross, although it may be possible to do so a short way up the estate track. Muddy walk despite dry week. Estate have opened final part of path to top but only from Easter to August Bank Holidaytrimarc208/07/2016

Three Legged Cross to Kingsclere. SW cnr of reservoir gets my vote.Smudge19/06/2015
From Grotto Lodge on RoW then permissive path. Unsure where precise HP lies. I had it at SW corner of reservoir compound, near the entrance, but that's approx 150m NNW of the OS spot height, which I walked over also before visiting the arch folly, which is definitely at a lower elevation, but gives excllent views over the Highclere Castle.jonglew05/04/2015

Made a small detour from an Amesbury Walkers Series Walk, parked in Ashmansworth village, but there is some parking at 3 Legged Cross. Followed the permissible path (Easter Bank Holiday to August Bank Holiday, Heaven's Gate Walk http://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/about-us/walks-within--near-the-estate.html) to the summit and then the gate.Jacqdaw28/07/2013
Well worth the detour to Heaven's Gate, impressive brick folly with great views, including Highclere Castle (aka Downtown Abbey)Hillsidenick28/07/2013
