From the school house at Ettrick where there is parking.BLACKHILL02/10/2023
Car park south of Ramseycleuch Bridge. Walked west down road almost to the old school and then took gate and track onto hillside. Steep climb on short grass up to Ramseycleuch Kip (405m) then grassy slopes to summit. Ladder stile over deer fence gives access to very large cairn and high point. Solo.Dangerous Dave04/07/2023
1 of 2: Parked just south of Ramseycleuch at 27359 14283. Went to the right of the bracken. Very hot and calm day. With Karen.ChrisR11/08/2022
Solo. From parking S of Ramseycleuch Bridge. Went over gate at west end of triangular road junction (271145) and over Ramseycleuch Kip direct to summit. Initial part not so good at this time of year due to bracken but it’s only a short stretch. Descended SW and easily got across Kirk Burn not far from a sheep fold. Followed RoW to Ettrick Church. A beautiful day.pwbellarby11/07/2022
From Law India with Bob and Brian. Poor descent east to Hopehouse through new plantation. Excellent views.Play2End01/05/2022
Parked in parking spot just south of Ramseycleuch Bridge (274144). Through gate opposite west end of triangular junction (272145), and then steeply up to Ramseycleuch Kip. Easy slopes up to Ward Law. Returned over Craig Hill to Ettrick Church. Thick hill fog.vuirich14/01/2022
From Hopehouse, parked by phone box (NT 2954 1648). Took Captain's Road for ~700m then peeled off across rough and wet ground. Lot of unmapped conifer plantations round here now; found a good break at NT 2803 1641 heading almost due S which meets an unmapped logging road after ~200m. Followed that to NT 2724 1608, after which a good break goes NW to come out on to open fell side after 300m. On to Cowan's Croft -> Fall Law -> Shepherdscleuch Rig -> Tuishielaw, dropping down to re-join Captain's Road at the fords.jonglew30/10/2021
With J on a windy & overcast day from Ettrick. Parked at the church & stepped out of the car on to dog mess. Nice. Took old RoW up hillside & aimed for Craig Hill on an ATV track for a good view along the Ettrick valley. Continued N then E on good ATV & sheep tracks via Rig Head to Ward Law. Cairn on other side of deer fence accessible by a stile. Best descent would be to prominent cairn S of the summit & then SW to cross the burn before it becomes a ravine. However, we crossed burn higher up for a trudge through a bog before regaining RoW back to the church.NotReallyABagger08/10/2021
Up from the forest track to the east which runs round the flank of Thirlestane hill. Very easy going - up to big bend, just beyond is a clear firebreak in the new plantings with a path up it. A kink in the middle, otherwise straight up. Easy going after through mostly grass to the big cairn on the skyline (E cairn) then just beyond is the fence line and the summit big cairn. Return the same way. Make a note of the forest entry/exit but otherwise completely uncomplicated.Belfarm 27/06/2021
Time includes 15mins looking for Uncle Sandy’s grave, unsuccessfully. Lovely still day – sunny at first but clouded over on way up. Up from kirk, down via Ramseycleuch Kip. Rounsfell01/05/2021
Parked opposite the ex-school (14:20) and climbed up steeply from gate about 100m east. Easy going on short grass initially then various ATV tracks through short heather. Huge tower cairn by a deer fence at summit, slightly beyond a smaller one visible from below. Rain threatened but never came. Returned through school house gate (15:50). Pleasant hill.dbb26/04/2021
Used Quad track behind houses and then straight up - very steep.m0jla20/09/2020
Solo trip. Up from the old quarry by Ramsey Cleuch. Down skirting the north side of Ramseycleauch Hill, then along the west side of the Thirlestane woods down to the road. This is a longer but easy route and avoids all the bracken.Invicta1416/07/2020
From Ettrick church. Crossed Kirk Burn low down, before the last house (the fence is very low and the burn is fairly easy to cross). Then up to first cairn over short grass, and slightly rougher going to the summit.PGCE27/02/2020
Climbed from the school in Ettrick. Simple walk up with fine views. 1 hour up and downSimon Winton06/02/2020
A very large cairn for a relatively wee hill.summitter15/08/2019
From start of track SW of Hopehouse. Followed track to NT 27232 16085, then up fire break in trees on buggy track to large cairn and then to bigger cairn on summit.Lionel Bidwell07/07/2019
Up from Ettrick church; more direct line down to Ettrick. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/05/wednesday-1-may-ward-law-nt262159-594m.htmlGayle01/05/2019
Parked at Ettrick Church. Up path to gate then small path along side of Kirk Burn to good crossing point. Directly up short grass to first cairn then on to summit cairn. Being a traditionalist, had to use my limited climbing skills to touch top of tall cairn. Back same way, 73 minutesCoinneach01/04/2019
I went up from the triangle road junction at 271145. Bad route, no grass for the most part, a rough land climb. I came down to the sheepfold at 262152 ending at the back of waht looks like social housing - no exit there near sheepfolds - came out on to road at bridge for burn 2645 1443. Wish I had gone up from there and come back the same way on grass rather than moor. Plentiful parking at former school or memorial hall near to where I came down to the road. Operated ham radio on summit for SOTA on short wave using Morse (GM4OBK/P).G4OBK (Phil)03/01/2019
From turning place at end of road near Potburn. Potburn, Pot Law, Bodesbeck Law, Nowtrig Head, Mid Rig, Bell Craig, Andrewhinney Hill, Trowgrain Middle, Herman Law, Peniestone Knowe, Ward Law, Tushielaw Inn. 1/8 cloud, light breeze, 21C. With PM.CJM10/10/2018
From Peniestone with CM. 10th and last of day. Good underfoot most of the way. Made big mistake by heading directly east to Hopehouse on south side of deer fence. Had to climb over to reach forest road that is not on maps and then head directly down Thirlestone Hill to the farm at Thirlestanehope. Headed back to Tushielaw Inn.bolton10/10/2018
Loch of the Lowes car park at 238204 & up Fall Law, Shepherdscleuch Rig & Cowan’s Croft. From Cowan’s Croft, followed intermittent faint path alongside deer fence to the summit cairn. To descend, over ladder stile & picked up a well-used ATV track which headed over to Rig Head & down to col - SUW & then good track down to Loch of the Lowes & along shoreline back to car. (S)gerrybowes21/06/2018
From Glen Cafe south of loch and up track to Peniestone Knowe. Dropped to col and up by fence then deer fence to Ward Law's large cairn. Back along fence line to Cowan's Croft then down to col and up to Shepherdscleugh Rig. Back to Captains Road (horrid) then up firebreak to Fall Law in its haven surrounded by trees. Back down to track to end of forest then up The Wiss coming down by west ridge to Tibbie Shiels Inn. Sun shone all day - great walk.SS21/04/2018
From Honey Cottage Campsite, up the forest road from 290161, 2k to hairpin bend, then down to the col, over the deer fence gate and straight up to the summit. Sleety and very cold NE wind.NormanW31/03/2018
Took a direct line from Cowans Croft. This was rough going. The whole area round Shepherdscleugh has had a lot of tree planting which is not shown on the map. Went easily down NE to the cairn and then down to a new forest road.Alan Moore30/11/2017
From Ettrick Kirk. Get across the Kirk Burn and onto good ground as soon as possible to avoid steep and rough reascent. Then ascend the south face to the 500m cairn and up the SW ridge. HP is on north side of a deer fence but there is a stile.Topographer5704/11/2017
Parked Hopehouse caravan park yard, with permission. Up Captains path, very poor condition. Left on forest road to 450m. Then path through trees up to cairn. Sunny on top, then rained off. Mild but cold wind, good views.iangalbraith30/09/2017
Parked opposite Glen Café on side of Loch of Lownes - Southern Uplands Way (SUW)- Wester Rig - The Wiss (& trig) - Longmoor End - Captains Road to Cown Croft - crossed Murt Grain and Yoke Burn to Ward Law (with its deer fence and squared stone cairn) - Ramsey Knowe - Rigg Head - SUW - Track down to Riskenhope and then along shore of Loch of Lownes.briandavies29/04/2017
Intended to this earlier in the day, but Ettrick Church road was heaving with cars. They have a service 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, and it was Easter Sunday. Came back later in the afternoon. Crossed Kirk Burn about 50 metres from the last enclosed area. Grazed my shin. On the way down I found a much better path fording the stream only about 50 metres further on. Apart from that, straightforward slog up initially steep grassy slopes.Owen B16/04/2017
Very soft ground on the way from Cowans Croft to Ward Law. Soft but not sodden. Good summit with commanding views.cumbria mammoth05/03/2017
From Ettrick Church...easy track up to shieling then cross burn and slope to summit. Topped by huge carn and fence. Damp and cloudy summitN.Morters18/02/2017
From Hopehouse, via Thirlestane Hill. The OS map is horribly out of date: this approach runs through a huge young forest not on the map. It's still possible to follow an old ATV track through the christmas trees all the way to Ward Law, but it's hard going through lush vegetables. Onwards via Ramsey Knowe and Cowan's Croft is a lovely easy stroll, and on via the Captain's path to the Wiss. Returning via the Captain's path is awful through the forest (quagmire), but new forest roads in the Hopehouse glen give a fast descent via Thirlestanehope.Gill04/12/2016
Parked in small layby on east bound side of road near Scabcleuch Farm at NT 24707 14407. Set off in pouring rain which changed to driving snow above 500m but a worthy cairn at the summit.mntainman03/12/2015
from lay by 400m west of ettrick up over steep ground to the massive cairn, nice views.robertphillips21/02/2015
Up path by Thirlestane Burn past grouse butts and on to summitAndrewFinnimore02/09/2014
Took new forest track on S flank of Thirlestane Hill, which goes up to the 450m bealach. Thence via nascent firebreak to cairn on NE ridge and easily to the top.Chris Peart25/03/2014
from newish forestry rd at 293 163 which I could see from Cacra Hill. simple and obvious route to top. Fine viewpoint, though cloudy to NE. Next Law KneissThearlaichdubh13/10/2013
From Ettrick Church up right of way track heading initially towards Craig Hill. Crossed Kirk Burn at NT25435 15131 at annoyingly deep and steep ravine. Ascended via large cairn half way up looking initially like summit. Huge cairn at summit. Ground just to SW of cairn looks higher than base of cairn. Descended, crossing burn further uphill at 25267 15361. Not much easier. Probably better to cross much lower. Direct ascent crossing burn immediately above church may be best - but would involve negotiating private land and walls and fences.silverhow08/09/2013
From Tibbie Shiels w Jenx, cold crisp morning, -4C. Up Southern Upland Way, cut left to gain ridge and Wiss summit. On to Turner Cleugh then ridge to Ward Law. Over Shepherdscleugh Rig, detour to Fall Law then onto Cowan's Croft. Topped out on Ward Law and then back by SUW to Tibbie Shiels.nordicstar01/12/2012
Parked near George V post box of old post office which shut in 1990 to SE of summit. Relatively easy ascent up tract and longish grass + bracken at times. Summit fence has been upgraded to what appears on current photo. Will send the current one to Des.!!Dugswell211/08/2012
From Tibbie Shiels via SUW, Captain's Road & over Cowan's Croft.agentmancuso14/07/2012
Started ascent on track from church - then headed uphill. Good summit views.JohnW01/05/2012
Hill run.Man of Kernow128/11/2009
From Ettrick Church, path NW until slopes on R have to be climbed. Huge well-built cairn on top. Couple of other smaller but well built cairns on this hill.Aye Jimmy07/06/2008
Part of a circular route involving Ward Law, Turner Cleuch Law and The Wiss from starting point of Tibbie Shiels Inn. Only difficulty was double barbed wire crossing a wall next to Tushielaw Burn.Jhimmy16/07/2005

From farm. On tarred access road and good bridal path above the upper farm buildings by side of stream to rough pasture with sheep and cattle and final fence to moor. Trudge through swamp and tall grasses to a prominent stone man and 1/2 m further to top at 10.00. Massive 4' square 12' tall stone man.arranc22/09/2002
