Parked in car park at Crwt y-cadno. Nice walk up bridleway to 724449, then route around outside of boggy bit following various animal tracks. Returned same way. 6.50 miles. Nice walk. | JulieB | 02/01/2024 |
From the chapel, then up zig-zag track to path along rocky ridge to cairn and trig. | JGC | 17/10/2023 |
From the chapel to NE, two gates around the cottage and then up good track to start. Then ATV and sheep tracks to Cairn and then trig. | PeterD | 17/07/2023 |
Parked the car at Cwm Rhaeadr and enjoyed a two day and one night backpack mooching over this wonderful hill. Approached the summit via the bog that guarded it to the east. Very dry and easy to navigate and fine views from the summit to the west. Lovely to see that the lichen was undisturbed on many of the Bronze Aged hollowed out burial cairn. | morgs4mountains | 13/10/2022 |
Unusually for first time in 17 days climbing remaining Welsh Marilyns, I woke early, knew there was rain forecast sometime and got off early to drive to northerly start point and was walking by 6am. Up into thin mist for first time this month. Back to car by 7.20 and rains started ten mins later. Heavily for an hour or so while driving south to next one. Five Welsh ones left!! | vegibagger | 18/06/2022 |
From GR 720462. Reasonable parking in huge passing place, walled sides. Up via wood then grassy field. Top of which picks up diagonal track almost to plateau. Grass then a few boggy tussocks to summit. 1/4 Marilyn short pre breakfast walk. Cloudless Sky. | N.Morters | 30/05/2021 |
From the car park at Cwrt y cadno west of the hill. Followed right of way SE onto the grassy high plateau and on to the fine cairns at the top. Whilst in the area, drive east up the valley to a walk around the RSPB nature reserve at GR 782484. More people but fine scenery. | mindlessflogger | 06/05/2021 |
park by chapel knock on cottage door for courtesy old lady helpful showed me the way gate to right of garrage route as others 2 cairns and TP at top great views today 40 mins up down and take in views | underhill | 27/03/2021 |
Fell run up from the footpath by the cottage just northwest of the Towy Bridge Inn. Overgrown at first but then better tracks until close to the summit. Down via ATV tracks to Chapel then back via road. | Vertigo | 10/07/2020 |
From the chapel up a muddy atv track then path along rocky ridge and eventually to cairn and trig. | NormanW | 25/02/2020 |
From NE starting from nice little chapel. Hill access via gate behind cottage. Rough track up to ridge, then sheep trails to summit. | Topographer57 | 06/09/2019 |
Crugiau Merched from the Chapel. Just made it out after heavy shower. Good track up through the dense bracken. 3.6km with 250m of ascent in 1h 20m. | silveracorn_alan | 06/08/2019 |
With: hb; We parked on road above the chapel. We knocked at cottage but nobody was home so used the track by the garages anyway. We followed this well graded track until we reached the deep bracken then found the shortest route through it to the open rocky ridge above, which we followed to the summit. We explored the trigpoint and both rocky cairns before descending. The descent was much delayed by bilberries! | Ian Baines | 28/07/2019 |
With: ib; Parked on road above chapel. Used the track by the garrages & followed this until the deep bracken started then made the shortest route through it to open rocky ridge above which we followed to summit. Descent was much delayed by bilberries! | Helen Baines | 28/07/2019 |
walked over mynydd mallaen plateau with sam from rhandirmwyn surprisingly dry and good ground until half mile to summit. sunny and windy and feels so remote | richardrosser | 25/11/2018 |
From Cwm y Rhaiadr forest car park at SN 765422, on forest tracks and a path to open hillside at SN 766435. Then a long trek on a good path, most of the way to SN 725449, then N over pathless rough ground to summit. | Isbjorn | 15/11/2018 |
Road closed to the west due to landslide but we got thro at weekend. Parked on road, down track to old chapel thro gate to left of cottage & up path. Nice hill. | rogreeves | 29/09/2018 |
From the Chapel. Old lady in cottage happy for us to park and to use landrover track (starts beside garages). Dry up, rained back, great views, high cloud, and warm | iangalbraith | 20/07/2018 |
Glorious day, walking up from Capel Bwlch y Rhiw. Good views to the western Beacons. | huwthomas | 08/07/2018 |
With Ikuko, we made a walk of it by taking the slanting path NW of Nant-y-Bai bridge, going up through the trees and along the bridleway across the moor. Very dry. We descended to the chapel and then back along the road. Very pleasant 8 miles. Pint after at the Towy Bridge Inn. Very welcoming. | GWR Chris | 29/06/2018 |
The white painted chapel is 1/4 mile down the road from Bwlch Y Rhiw. Had help from shepherd who said ok to use his track going up from behind cottage by chapel-lay by on road above. Track takes you a fair way up from where it's sheep trods to reach the impressive summit. feels very remote. | Mark Sims | 01/06/2018 |
Start from Rhandirmwyn across Mynydd Mallaen to TP 459, Crugiau Merched, TP 429m, Cwm-Y-Rhaeadr Forest, back to rhandirmwyn. 15.6 miles. | stephenbuda | 31/03/2018 |
A really lovely walk from the chapel. An easy, steep, grassy track, then, when it heads into the swamp, just leave it and head up towards the ridge on easy, dry grass. Along the mossy ridge, a very short bog trot, then you're heading up a nice dry summit climb on short heather. The summit has two massive, ancient cairns and a trig, and amazing views. Gaze in wonder at the massive area of bog to the SW, and feel smug that you've avoided almost all of it. | Gill | 12/01/2018 |
1of 3 Marilyns today with a lot of driving in between.
Parked on road above chapel and up what is probably the most obvious route. Theres a decent track up to about a third of the way but this eventually peters out to sheep trods. I'd suggest staying Right to avoid the worst of the wet (in hindsight).
Summit area has two large cairns of some antiquity. Views were somewhat muted by the early morning mist. Unlike my next hill (Carn Gafallt) I think its very likely I will come back here. It's miles from anywhere!! | stig_nest | 06/08/2017 |

Tried parking at chapel but it seemed tight to parked up on the road between farm and chapel near gravel pile. Then took same route as pwheeler up past chapel onto feint frack up this fine hill on a fine day to beg hill trig and grab a cache. | Father Ted | 28/11/2016 |
Parked outside gate entrance to Bwlch-y-rhiw chapel (SN 72982 46430) asked permission at house and granted. Ascended steep quad bike track up west side of Gogyrnant accessed via two gates to north and east of cottage. At top of steep descent track tends to continue south but needed to head SW towards summit. Track did re-appear occasionally but mostly across heather. Visited tumulus and shelter first to the east then on to trig and summit. Returned by same route. | mntainman | 23/11/2016 |

From Bwlch-y-rhiw chapel up landrover track on W side of Gogyrnant gorge. When the track headed into boggy ground, I struck up the dryer slopes nearer steep ground, a more or less direct line to the top. Very fine short (only ca 2 mile) walk. The chapel and the board explaining its history is well worth a look. It explains why there isn't necessarily a church building associated with every Mynydd yr Eglwys. | pwheeler | 27/04/2016 |
From the bwlch. Easy walk. Impressive cairns. Shame it was misty. | jenx | 21/02/2016 |
Parked at Bwylch-y-rhiw farm. Asked for permission and ok. Up direct beyond barn, through enclosure and a steep travwrse to gain main ridge. Lovely SSSI summit with two burial cairns and trig. Up and down in 40 mins. | nordicstar | 21/02/2016 |
From Bwlch-y-rhiw - parking OK | jimbloomer | 20/01/2016 |
Lovely walk up the track that goes around the back of the cottage and chapel. Go throught he gate to the left of the cottage fromt garden to access a quad track. Crugiau Merched in Welsh means two sisters. This relates to the two very large piles of stones on the summit. Operated SOTA from the top on VHF. | G4OBK (Phil) | 08/12/2015 |
5/5 Fifth of day (Mynydd Cronos/Cefn Bach/Banc y Graig/Cefn Branddu/Crugiau Merched) | Fergalh | 01/11/2015 |

On a Mynydd Mallaen circuit from Cilycwm. Pleasant top with Trig and two large cairns. Great views of Cothi Valley. Beware bog if approaching from South follow high ground to SE to reach col where a there's a small path across. | MattM | 02/11/2014 |
SN7222545541.Parked at church/cottage, then took track at the rear of the cottages to the highest point and then went right on trods towards top. | Anton | 08/09/2014 |
Parked at chapel after speaking with owner of Ty Capel. Pleasant walk up sheep track, then out onto heather-clad hillside to summit. Buzzard perched on trig as we approached, didn't want to leave, seemed to resent our intrusion! Lovely panoramic views on sunny morning. | jonglew | 07/09/2014 |
From SN 728 464. | summitsup | 18/02/2013 |
Three parking places on road of various safety, biggest one is nearer the farm. Took little side road passed Chapel and house to use good track up NE ridge. Return by same route. Lovely afternoon. Met Helen (400Mas) leading blind walker. | Dugswell2 | 16/05/2011 |
Up the spurr from E of Bwlch-y-rhiw through crags. | Eddie | 23/02/2011 |
My last Welsh Marilyn. A nice rocky little hill. Climbed steeply up east side of stream and returned down west side which farmer told me was the preferred route. Quite a lot of people climb it. | chriswatson | 09/11/2010 |
From NE | Dusty | 31/07/2010 |
