7.9 mile circular from parking space in road corner at Cwm Banw. Followed good path not marked on the map from road corner straight up through field across road and up by woodland to access land. We followed the access land boundary along until meeting the Beacons Way. We then ascended easy paths up to Pen Cerrig-Calch and then followed gentle ridge up to Pen Allt-Mawr. First time I have seen the trig toppled over. It was standing when I was up here last in 2016. From here we followed easy paths onto Pen Twyn Glas descending the Tal Trwynau ridge down to fields and just before reaching farm we followed a signed path (not marked on maps) heading down to the road bend where we parked. All hills bagged for the 5th time. 588m ascent. Saw only 3 people all day as I think the 34c forecast put most people off. Clear and sunny with a surprisingly stiff breeze. I left the A479 at Waun Fach hamlet and parked near Blaunea-Fry, just short the bridleway approaching Waun Fach mountain from the south-west. The place to park is on a corner near a cattle grid, but not please obstructing the adjacent heavy machinery gate which the farmer needs to use. Waun Fach took me about an hour and 45 mins without rushing, plenty of photos. The top is unremarkable but gave stunning panoramic views. I would love to know what distant mountains I could see. Revived I rundled back down to the cairn I passed at the top of bridleway and on to path up Mynydd Llysiau and on to bag Pen Allt-mawr. At the boundary stones before Pen Twyn Glas stand two grave 19c grave stones. I couldn’t make out the inscription, but imagine they may have been a loving couple. On nearing the summit of Pen Allt-mawr follow the less steep path to the right, as this is easier than blundering straight up the crags adding to the erosion. Again more great views, especially of Mynydd Troed and the | Pete West | 21/06/2019 |

A fifteen-mile horseshoe which took in the best of the Black Mountains. There is parking for half a dozen cars in a lay-by on a country lane near Blaenau – mine was the only car when I parked, though by late afternoon there were several others. I think I could do this walk time and again and still enjoy it – yet the Black Mountains remain a secret. After Waun Fach, all the time I was aware of the steep slope of Pen Allt-mawr getting closer. After passing several boundary stones, some of which could be mistaken for gravestones, I arrived at the foot of the slope, which duly turned out to be the hardest of the day. | peter4lc | 23/07/2004 |

In the early 1990s before I had even heard of Simms I did my own personal challenge of all the 600m peaks in Wales. I have a record of the summits but not the dates so I have selected this arbitrary date within the period for them all. Some I missed but this was one I did. | dickscroop | 01/07/1994 |

In the Black Mountains, this is my favourite mountain walk above 2000 ft and my favourite summit: Penhoelmeirch- Table Mountain- Pen cerrig-calch- Pen Allt-mawr- Mynydd Llysiau- Pen Twyn Glas- Penhoelmeirch. Lots of interest on the way- a well named table mountain, limestone high up on Pen cerrig-calch, then I love the way the two scarps meet right at the summit of Pen Allt-mawr, a narrow airy wedge. Bit different to Waun Fach! Snow showers, but the rest of the time crystal clear visibility. | pwheeler | 04/01/1991 |
