From Mathew's Linn car park on the shores of Kielder water (Toilets were open even though the website say they are closed) £5 all day up to Nine at night. A Twenty four mile walk to the summits of Glendu hill & Sighty crag taking Nine and half hours. For Sighty crag after returning to High Long house after summiting Glendu I continued on the road past Adder's crags and up by Yett burn at the end of the hard road I branched Left across open ground to find and follow a line of old fence posts to the currick and on to the summit of Sighty crag returning to the road the same way.WAYNE ROWLETT15/10/2023
Heavy showers. Wet to my pants.Stickman27/08/2023
Parked near Cuddy Hall, tracks through forestry, then there and back via indistinct flooded paths and the peathag drag. Driving rain from Christianbury Crags onwards.PhilipChaston12/08/2023
Fairly hard going once the atv track disappears. Stuck with the wall and fence. Back same way.jef02/04/2023
From ample parking at The Loan (nr The Flatt). Same way as many. Forest roads to the ATV track which was easier to find than expected, it's almost paved and straight, then becomes like a drainage channel but a trod can be followed to the foot of Round Crag-- then rough, even by the wall, but the trods either side soon appear. On the dry S ridge of pt 506 a clear path emerges but then it's thin trods and 2 peat-hagged cols in the last 1 km. Mercifully just 2h 10 min, as thunderstorms blotting out the Pennines finally engulfed me on the return on the roughest section (4 lightning strikes within a mile).pwheeler06/09/2022
Sighty Crag from The Flatt. A revisit to bag it as a Dewey this time; first done from the east as a Marilyn in 2018. Verge parking below the farm. Cycled up the forest road to below round Crag, then across rough ground to the wall / fence where a small track could be followed most of the way to the trig. Return the same way. A round trip of 14km with 420m ascent in 3h40m.silverwolf_alan14/05/2022
From the parking area near the forestry entrance as others. On forestry roads until it started descending near Long Crag then Atv track then energy sapping heather until I found the fence. Tried a different way back. Just as energy sapping and longer. Hard work but done. Weather was cold and windy but despite threatening the snow didn't arriveLongwojo09/04/2022
My penultimate English Marilyn. Parked just before start of forest track near The Loan. Up the forest track until it levels off and a felled area. An ATV track heads up to Round Crag, but then disappears. Cross rough terrain towards wall. followed this and then fence all the way to top. Faint tracks either side of fence. Going made much easier as it was dry underfoot. Good views all around from top. Went back same way.PeterD23/07/2021
A felled tree is now across forest road just past first quarry but is passable. A larger felled tree deliberately blocks access to the hairpin from which others have accessed the moor -everything beyond it is obliterated by felling. I picked my way between brash and forest to climb over fence after which it is unpleasant hard workup over Long Bar then pathless heather moor to the top. Returned following faint path by the fence to Pt 476(with lone tree)from where I headed across heather to low pt between Slaty Crag and Round Crag to pick up a faint track which is easily followed back to forest road. This is now probably easiest ascent route.Ben Rinnes27/06/2021
Did not reach summit. Forestry work prevented access via tracks. We turned back from public footpath due to rifle discharge very close to our position.Ashley28/05/2021
As KeithbytheC. Just needed to get onto that track ASAP to avoid anymore horrible ground.conanharrod02/05/2021
Started from Cuddyshall Bridge to include Glendhu Hill. Follow forest tracks along PROW past Blacklyne House then turn right at NY54589 81581 then right again before Bewcastle Fells at NY56124 81361. Bit of a bogfest following fence to Christianbury Crag which can be avoided for most of the way after 300/400m by stepping a couple of rows into the plantation. Follow faint track near fence, through the heather to Burnt Tom Crags but from there I chose to head direct to Sighty Crag. Quite difficult Hags and Groughs at the beginning but then OK. Reaching summit at 3pm in December any idea of including Glenghu Hill had long past so heathery descent aiming for Christianbury Crags before crossing Gate Grain at NY58460 81435 then up the other side, over low barb wire fence to pick up firebreak then forest track past a quarry and Long Crag before picking up the ascent route near Bewcastle Fells. A long way for just one tick but a good day out. Start from The Flatt like most others.mntainman07/12/2020
Parked near Flatt, walked via forest and edge of Black Stantling, followed wall/fence to summit. Mist and horrible underfoot conditions persuaded me to try a different return route, heading WNW for stream junction at forest edge, but I was on wrong side of unfordable streams - torrents - and had to reascend northwards to cross into that forest block and though eventually finding a good track, couldn't find the R o W which crossed the main stream so had a long detour, adding several hours to the day. Not recommended unless you want an adventure!IanHHill05/08/2020
From Christianbury Crag via Burnt Tom Crag following fence line to 599817. Then direct ascent across boggy ground. Little in the way of paths. Decended rough ground to Round Crag and picked easy through trees to forestry track at 584796. KeithByTheC11/07/2020

If I was superstitious, I might not have set out on this walk to climb Sighty Crag and Black Knowe. I forgot the maps and lost an hour and £30 getting some more in Carlisle. I only had one glove but remember seeing one on the ground at the services and thinking how remarkably like mine it looked. I missed a turning and ended up at an army base and made a minor navigation error at the start, losing twenty minutes. So what else could go wrong? Midday, 5 degrees, cloud base 1200', light south-westerlies. From Churnsike Lodge via forest tracks to Gait Burn, followed new path north that was like quicksand then west; finding the trig by baggers' sixth sense. On to Black Knowe.Wycombe Wanderer17/12/2019
From the Flatt via RoW and Christianbury Crag. Up to summit along fence lines with trod paths mostly, some peat hags needed more effort. Descent to SW along fence then west from fence jct 594797. This was laborious and time consuming over tussocks, mature heather, and much old felling with gullies filled with rotted brash. Plain sailing from forestry track at 584796.Moorponder07/10/2019
From Caldslope cycled to 584800 edge of forest/ felled area followed a muddy teack which soon disappeared. Bit of a boggy path beside fence near summit. Tough going on heather & tussock. Nothing good to say about my route.rogreeves06/09/2019
Easy walk from The Flatt. Plenty of parking space ( Saturday) as no forestry activity. Solo.Dangerous Dave01/06/2019
Parked at Kielder Castle car park, cycled as far as I could then swore and cursed the rest of way in a navigational exercise and a right pain surface to walk on. Should be called Unsighty Crag. Rather root canal surgery than ever clapping eyes on this hideous peak again. Company: Soloiandesbottes19/05/2019
Would have been last English Marilyn but now need to do Hensbarrow Downs as only Hensbarrow Beacon was on list when I did it!davefh11/05/2019
From car park at top end of Kielder Water, bike up to top edge of forest then on foot. Expected hideous bogs, tussocks and heather; reality was significantly easier (save for one 0.3 mile section). Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/04/tuesday-23-april-sighty-crag-ny601809.htmlGayle23/04/2019
From the Flatt, forest tracks muddy some closed due to logging, with Ellie dog.BLACKHILL06/04/2019
My last English & Welsh Marilyn - 52 Scottish ones left. Route as Nordicstar: up forest tracks to high point, then to wall/fence (which is the toughest bit). Follow it north to a wooden gate. Over gate and follow fence to summit (as on 1:25k map). There is a faint soggy path on west side of fence for most of the way. 1h40 up, 1h20 down.PGCE26/12/2018
via normal from The Flatt. Forestry works going on but easily ignored me... after quarry up to wall then followed as it turned into fence to summit. Cold early morning.N.Morters13/12/2018
From the Flatt. There is plenty of parking just down the gravel track at 56148 78514. The forest tracks were clear and easy going up to Slaty Crag. A quick didge up through the trees to the open moorland and then the fun starts. Almost completely pathless about 2 miles each way to the top. There is a faint path by the fence on the final ascent to the top which helps a bit but it is slow going. A great feeling of wilderness however. 2h 40m round trip 11.76km.clivevilla06/11/2018
From The Loan to Twolads Crag via forest tracks, then across moor to summit.Winterfloodian18/10/2018
Plenty of parking at forest entrance 562785.Saturday so no timber workings. Exited forest at 58843 81035 then 1.2k of heather and tussocks to top. Returned same way, 3 hours for 11.8k.NormanW22/09/2018
From The Flatt, parking at NY 5597 7842. Forestry work going on so avoided the main logging track. Took RoW towards Crew, then cross country to Long Crag trig - mainly sheep ground with good going underfoot. Long Crag to Sighty Crag started OK, but soon deteriorated into heather and rubbish, fortunately boggy sections largely dry. 1hr 30 up and 1hr 10 down.jonglew12/06/2018
Marilyn Walk 75. The ascent of Sighty Crag from Kielder Water. A long walk in along the forest roads, then a tough heather covered moor to cross. A glorious day with wall to wall sunshine. Very dry underfoot for the Cheviots. 22km there and back in 5h30m.silveracorn_alan27/05/2018
From The Loan up forestry track to the firebreak just beyond the quarry (hard going due to fallen trees). Then just a slog out to the summit and back taking in trig on Long Crag on way back.SS18/02/2018
From the Loan using Nordicstar's route, and with the luxury of Jonathan's GPS in the rain and mist. A better name under such conditions would be Unsighty Crag.Gill07/10/2017
Parked up at the Loan. Kettle on . Stalkers arrive..advised The forestry was off limits..talked for 10mins by which time they decided i could go so far in. Walked up tracks to digger driver. Chatted to him for a bit then out onto rough open fell. Superb summit eventually reached. In terms of wilderness surely the number one in England.stig_nest14/09/2017
With Bassy. From the Flatt via Christianbury Crag and Burnt Tom Crags. Desperate peat hags on top.robba_wag27/08/2017
Was very hard going, not one to repeat for me.G0HIO13/08/2017
From forest carpark by Lewis Burn at NY 63549 89605. Poor hills.Alan Moore27/10/2016
A very long walk through forest tracks & then across open moorland. Don't be tempted to drive along forest tracks through gate as it was locked when we returned! A joint SOTA activation with Dave G3TQQ & M0HQO.G4OOE15/09/2016
Parked on verge of minor road close to the Flatt. Up on moorland to E of trees: some faint quad bike tracks. Thus to Long Crag. Then N to Sighty Crag by fences: rough heather. On through rougher heather round to Christianbury Crag q.v.david.carreg01/08/2016
Parked the car at the Loan on the legal side of the gate. Loads of space. Followed right hand path through the forest. The path eventually levels out with a couple of rises and falls. A quarry comes into view at NY 58713E 80568. Follow the far rim of the quarry and there is an overgrown track. Follow this through the forest and make for Long Bar. There is a barbed wire fence to get over and there is no path so it's a case of picking the easiest way through the heather etc. From the top of Long Bar I made a route directly to Sighty Crag. No path again, just rough heather moor but not as bad as some people have made out. From the summit followed Rough Grain aiming for the forest edge at NY 58852E 81027. Barbed wire fence again. There is a ride through the forest here coming out on the track at NY 58722E 80867N, Turn right here and follow the track back to the LoanMikeM21/04/2016
I took the advice in previous logs and parked at NY 56155 78518 and then made the straightforward walk up the forest track to the sharp bend at the top before taking the short section of feint path and exiting the forest at NY 58843 81035. I then took a right for a short steep section alongside the fence before hacking it across the moorland to the trig point. Mixed weather, some sun, some rain, some wind but a pleasant day. It feels very isolated at the top.Father Ted18/04/2016

With a group of 7 during our A.G.M. weekend at Greenhead. Crumblie2 also in group. Misty, very wet under foot and over head.Thorny07/11/2015
parked near cottage at locked gate, good track then open moorland to the top.robertphillips25/10/2015

Parked at the entrance to the forestry roads, near The Flatt, at NY560784. I followed the southern edge up, and then north to the firebreak at NY587809, then onto the top. Returned by heading more SW from the firebreak, to make a 'circle' of my route. Why, I don't know. It's all trees or even denuded of trees.aul-fogie20/07/2015

Despite the low cloud and constant rain Mrs Mindlessflogger wanted to get this one ticked. From the Forest entrance 562785, followed the forest tracks up to their highest point where a smaller track lead up to the open moor. This was rough slow going following the compass with the wind, rain and poor visibility making it an excellent test of waterproofs and navigation. After passing over a few craggy bits, picked up a fence that seemed to be going in the right direction and mercifully this made the walking both psychologically and physically easier. After a few seconds at the trig, returned the same way and arrived at car thankful for GPS (used to check compass work) and a dry set of clothes. An Enjoyable experience (but only once in a while).mindlessflogger25/01/2015
First top this year. Hard slog after leaving forest track. Route as per nordicstar [previous entry] but returned same way.Crib Goch04/01/2015
W Jenx, penultimate English Marilyn - Peel Fell next w/end God willing. Parked at The Loan nr Caldslope, lots of space after short track section. A drag hunt had assembled so we just got in! Followed track, many felled trees tho. The final section of wood after zig zag sectn still standing. At high point of track obvious ride with ATV track goes up to open fell. Track continues with increasingly difficulty for 500m, then it's heather bashing time. Bit rough but not as bad as had been believed to be, and it had been wet. Aim for the wall / fence to East, through Black Stantling area - not shown on 1:25000, fairly new. Sheep/deer/people track good enough to follow, over Pt 506 its good going, then a bit of bog trot to final slopes in 1.5hrs. Nice views inc Kielder. Back same way out to Long Crag Trig. Descended to Watch Rigg where ride leads to track at 571787, we descended through the Linns though, lovely larches, and came out on track to Crew where its a short stroll to CP.nordicstar01/11/2014
