A long hard climb from Wasdale on a very hot day - 6 hours up, 3 hours down. Pillar has three plateaus before you hit the top. Then a long drive back to Borrowdale.Nick06/09/2023
A repeat of the Mosedale Horseshoe from the NT Car Park. Visiting Looking Stead, Pillar, Black Crag, Scoat Fell (all 3 summits), Steeple, Red Pike (Wasdale), Black Crag, and Yewbarrow (both summits) which is proving an increasing challenge for me at the end of a big day. A glorious day in the Lakes, with extensive views across the whole LDNP. 20km with 1330m ascent in 8h 30m.silverwolf_alan24/08/2023

Solo from Wasdale Head. Wife and friend following an hour after after train issues. Took in Looking Stead and Pillar. Met the others at 750m on my return journey, but had to get back to pick up kids. Quiet. Counted only 20 or so souls, but weather amazing and views complete.nukeboy120/04/2023

3rd visit and the 1st time I have had a view, and what a view, just stunning. Came up from Wasdale Head up the Black Sail Pass. Returned pretty much the same way, but just before Black Sail Crag a faint path contours down the hillside to rejoin the BSP at an old ruined half a circle sheepfold. From Wasdale Head via Black Sail Pass and return by the same route. Conditions excellent but very windy at times. Took around 4 hours 30 minutes.Cicatrice26/09/2014
Parked up at Overbeck Bridge, walk up to Yewbarrow, easy scramble up the eastern side, then bite to eat on the summit. Scramble down Dore Head, then did the round of Red Pike, Scoat Fell, a detour up to Steeple, then back round to Pillar, before a gentle stroll down to the wadale Head Inn for a pint! Lot of people around in the Lakes due to the interest of the 2 Lancaster bombers flying over. Great weather for it as well.GaryG07/09/2014

On the Saturday Carol, Ella, Ryan, Lee and I walked the 'high level route' through the coves from Black Sail Pass. Shamrock Terrace was too icy to safely traverse so we went up (Great Doup?) gully to Pillar's summit trig. Bitter wind at the summit and light snow cover on the plateau. Starting from Bowness Knott, I took the long route up Pillar but was surprised by the time it took. Having walked the length of Ennerdale Water and crossed the River Liza, I walked on its south bank before turning steeply uphill and taking longer than expected to emerge from the woods. I crossed High Beck as it became a stream, but never found a path from this point and struggled up the steep stony hillside to Wind Gap. It was an easy stroll to the summit of Pillar on a fine, cloudless day, but it had taken about three and a half hours since I set out.peter4lc15/09/2011

Objective, Mosedale Horseshoe. Hot, muggy, midgy day. Up to Black Sail Pass and along climbers traverse, past Robinson's cairn and up Shamrock traverse. Looked at slab and notch route up on to Pillar but decided against it. Up onto Pillar Fell and to Steeple. Ran to Hayc0ck and back, over Red Pike and down the knee crunching Dore Head scree shoot. Cracking day out.Mark T30/06/1994

Then over Kirk Fell, down to Black Sail Pass & on to Pillar, down to Wind Gap. Joan, Peter, Ian & dogs. Camped on island on Sprinkling Tarn. A cold but calm night. Sun shone over the rim of Glaramara at 6.40am - A GLORIOUS MORNING - wonderful to be around. Set off 8.15am. On top of Great Gable 9 45am could see the Isle on Man very clearly and north of the Solway and nobody else in sight. An early lunch on Kirkfell. Ian rested and sunbathed at Black Sail Pass whilst the rest went up to the top of Pillar and back in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Then took traverse routes to Windy Gap. Peter & Joans legs weary. Troubles feet worn off. Arrived back at out island home at 5.15pm. Revived by hot chocolate and explored another tarn hidden above Aaron Crags. Some more sketching.PeteF05/08/1987

Black Sail YH Pillar Honister YH 9th April 1982 Set out Black sail YH 10.15am. Mist lifted to give a clear day, but cold and windy in places. Did Climbers Traverse. Path narrow, loose, up and down traversing above steep drop to Ennerdale. Beyond Pillar Rock the path was covered in snow. I crawled across it onto some loose scree in middle of snow which gave way, I slid down and thought I would die, but my foot caught on a rock. I bust my lip and scrapped my knee. I managed to get off the snow field by using a sharp stone to make hand holds in the snow to climb up on. Grateful to be alive once on top of Pillar. Got to Honister YH 5.12pmVictor09/04/1982

Black Sail to Honister YH via Pillar, Scoat Fell Haycock and Red Pike 3rd July 1981 Left YH 9:30. drizzling, cloulds on top but suddenly cleared as I got to top of pillar 11:18. Rained again and back in clouds. Did not do Steeple in case got lost in mist. Scoat Fell 12:39. Out of cloulds on way down but back into clouds at top of Haycock1:23. Struggled to find path down to Ennerdale made my own way to start with then found a path. Had to wade across river in Ennerdale as no bridge. Top of Red Pike 4:30. On way down went wrong way for a while, so had to go back up. Only saw one person all way up and down Red Pike. Iwas planning to do all ridge High Stile and High Crag but realised I would not have time to get to Youth Hostel for tea, so tried to hitch a lift along road. First time I had hitched. 11 cars went past then one picked me up and took me to YH just in time for tea!Victor03/07/1981
