| 7th time around the fabulous Fairfield Horseshoe, on a glorious sunny clear, calm autumn day, with low mist in the valleys to start. A beautiful day to be on the Lakeland Fells, with L. Overnight frost on the grass but warm in the sun then inevitably chilly in a breeze on top. Saw a lonesome foxhoud looking for its pack -peering into the corries, but ignoring us people. | AW covered High Pike in his 1st guide to the Lakeland Fells in 1953 at the time of Everest's first conquest and 'tongue in cheek' fancifully likens the narrow rocky rises of Low and High Pike as seen from Ambleside to that of the 1st and 2nd step on Everest's NE ridge - although he admits that the likeness stops there as the continuation of the ridge to Dove Crag becomes broad and grassy. Pity the ridge orientation is not more N and E rather than S or we might have another Striding Edge to sharpen up the onward adventure -rather than grass and a wall to follow. However this section in reverse from Dove Crag does lend itself to easy exhilarating fell running in descent on the homeward leg of the famous Fairfield Horseshoe -and the wall is a reassuring guide. | Chris Pearson | 03/09/2021 |
