7th time around the fabulous Fairfield Horseshoe, on a glorious sunny clear, calm autumn day, with low mist in the valleys to start. A beautiful day to be on the Lakeland Fells, with L. Overnight frost on the grass but warm in the sun then inevitably chilly in a breeze on top. Saw a lonesome foxhoud looking for its pack -peering into the corries, but ignoring us people. We heard a horn in the far distance.Chris Pearson12/10/2023

Around the Fairfield Horseshoe with L sandwiched between freecycle collections - a mirror from the wonderfully named Tabitha Twitchett Cottage next to Beatrix Potter's house at Hawkshead then later an extraordinarily heavy Belfast Sink from Ambleside. Lovely approach through the woods alongside the gorge to High Sweden Bridge (much nicer than the standard Low Sweden bridge track). Since AW's day paths now exist up alongside both sides of the wall that follows the rocky crest -that on the west having been created thanks to the installation of a stile -although if taken the wall along the crest prevents the actual summit of Low Pike being easily reached(now with a cairn -another new addition since AW's guide).Chris Pearson03/09/2021

From High Pike this got very difficult. Thigh high snow, sheer drops down in to Scandale Beck, slippy and muddy. Crossed the wall and was a little easier but very very tired at this point. Nice pointy summit with a wall running straight through the highest point. From here it was going dark so decided to go the longer and wrong way back to Ambleside. As it went dark we ended up climbing down small cliffs and just when we found the path and put our torches on ended up lost in a field full of bulls. crossed over the fence and made it down to the road before walking back to Rydal Mount. fantastic exhausting day and many many memories made.Scotty 2 Hotty09/02/2018

A very disappointing day. We'd hoped to do the east side of the horseshoe up to Fairfield but after a late start, we managed to get lost almost immediately and had a pleasant walk into the valley but not gaining any height. We had to put that to rights by climbing almost straight up the valley side to the base of the scramble to the summit of Low Pike. Although it was a beautiful autumn day, there wasn't enough daylight left even to attempt High Pike. To cap it all, I managed to lose my fleece on the way down - bah! It's a long shot but if anyone finds a black Sprayway fleece with a grey Asda Thinsulate hat in the pocket, please call me on 07986 921528. Thanks...David S.17/11/2014

A circuit I have been meaning to do for so long now. Have looked at it from Ambleside and Lake Windermere cruises and finally got round to doing it. Not the greatest weather, mist, mizzle, drizzle and rain at the start but hoping to get out above the clouds and was not disappointed. After climbing up via Nab Scar onto Heron Crag and over Great Rigg I finally popped out of the cloud on Fairfield. Wow, what a view, looking down over St Sunday crag and Cofa Pike was very impressive. Cloud still welling up from Rydal Head so could not see that direction until well on the way down. Very pleasant trip out and pleasantly surprised how fit I was. Managed the trip without the help of Ibuprofen too! Few more Wainwrights ticked off.Mark T12/09/2013
