Fifth and final Nuttall for today. This was my third walk of the day and it was on a par with second insofar as it was grim. Worst of all worlds, no visibility cold and wintry but boggy rather than frozen.simocity11/02/2024

From Swinhope Head first to Chapelfell top following the wall virtually all the way, easy going in this dry spell. Then back across road for similar walk to Westhope Hill. Drove round to above Coalcleugh for another easy walk to Killhope Law.dickscroop10/07/2022

My final summit on day 5 of my 6 day backpack. A long walk up to the top via the Weardale Way and then the mountain road to Swinhope Head. I camped near to the wall corner about a third of a mile from the road. What a cracking spot and I enjoyed the easy summit as a path has developed all the way to the top now.morgs4mountains25/03/2022

From pt 607 (NY898331). The initially good ATV track only lasts until shortly after pt 645 where it forks; with each only having being subjected to half the tussock flattening power, neither fork is good, vanishing each time tough terrain is met. The N fork has the advantage of an old FP to use when the ATV disappearsIsbjorn26/08/2021

After climbing Middlehope Moor, drove to Swinhope Head, pleant parking space at top of pass. Followed an ATV track parallel to the fence pretty much all of the way. It disappeared in parts into a faint path but re-emerged at the top as another shooting track appeared from up the valley. Quite alot of water around near to the summit. Rest of it wasnlt too bad today but it has been dry, think it could be pretty soggy after a lot of rain. Returned same route, 3.6 miles, 1hr 20 round trip for me including summit photo stops etc.JulieB09/05/2021
With Sue and NB from carpark, followed wall then fence to Black Hill, Westernhope Moor, and Outberry Plain not as bad as described some new quad track in some places. Had all seasons with a biting cold wind.Frank04/05/2021
Solo walk from Swinhope Head. After a period of dry weather the conditions underfoot were virtually dry. Over Dora's Seat to Fendrith Hill (small cairn is higher than trig point) then onto Chapelfell Top (visited both cairns and pole) back over Swinhope Head to Westernhope Moor (knoll and trig point). The fence corner to Westernhope Moor can be cut out by following a quad bike track from 902332 to 913329 approx. This cuts out bog and peat hags at the corner.Glenelg23/04/2021

Boggy loop to Westernhope Moor Trig, Black Hill Trig (North of ridge at 559m, not recognised on this site) and Fendrith Hill. Spotted by gamekeeper who had seen me watching an owl and thought I was either a bird surveyor or someone destroying traps (which are apparently on surveillance now). He was satisfied after a chat that I was just visiting the trigs.meltdiceburg16/07/2020

with the dog walked from Swinhope Head GR NY 89839 33173 a layby at the cattle grid heading over to Fendrith Hill passing the top of the sky lifts one a good day you can see this quite boggy and lots of peat hags about summit is a fe meters from the OS trig the headding over the hags to get to the summit of Chapelfell top 2 summits hear and unsure which was the true one to can carry on down the ridge and then head for the road i opted to go down the side of the fell as no visibility could soon see the farm and the road thinking that looks tough trust me the road is miles easier than the walk itself back to the parking spot to refill with water and off over to Westernhope moor this is the boggiest part of the walk stick to the fence and walls unlike meDarren-44318/05/2019

Drove to Newbiggin and took the minor road from there to Swinhope Head. Rain turned to snow as the road climbed to 2,000 feet. There was a three mile out and back walk to James’s Hill, also known as Westernhope Moor. Visbility was poor in the snow, but route finding was stratightforward, following the fence to the summit. There were peat hags to negotiate, and in one of them my left leg went straight through snow and was stuck under ice. After a couple of worrying minutes, I managed to hack the snow away with my right foot, and, slightly shaken, walked on to the trig point. The mist started to clear on the descent.peter4lc29/11/2017

Snow fell yesterday giving a soft covering above 500m. Ascended from Harthope Head following the line of the fence. A drainage channel lead from the final corner of the fence north to the top. Snow hid the bog so I sank more than in previous days when I could see where to avoid. The trench takes you all the way to Fendrith Hill with good views south. Turned east following the fence past the ski tow and over Dora's Seat then down to the road crossing at Swinhope Head where I stopped behind a wall for lunch sheltering from the wind. Sun at times felt quite warm! I followed the fence gently uphill then cut the corner following buggy tracks at the 630m contour. The topic Westernhope Moor was very wet. I was tempted by the wooden track built for the buggies but it was very slippery and sunken into the water in the worst spots, so I went back to bog jumping. On the return I followed the line of the fence all the way which was Ok. Once back on the road I walked back to Daddry shield takinaxe.stephen24/02/2017

Walked on my own from St. John's Chapel. Warm but the mist swirled around me all day. from Swinhope Head. Windy, so damn windy. Made what should have been an easy walk pretty tough going. dont be fooled by the grassy slopes that lure you in either - its heather peat and water most of the way. seemed like further than the map suggested today - though i'd put that down to the weather. summit a short distance from the trig. the duckboard track doesnt appear to lead back to swinhope head.stig_nest11/05/2015
