Hugged stock fence from Baxton Fell and carried on to Cross of Greet. Three towers at the top are relics from the construction and alignment of the Haweswater viaduct. | Vulcan | 29/02/2024 |
Up the fenceline to the trig. Windy, rainy and boggy. | PhilipChaston | 23/12/2023 |
From Cross of Greet, with AT, JT and BL. Followed the fence-line SW then south up to the summit. Then onwards down to the col and up the broad NW ridge of Baxton Fell to its top. Return by outward route over the top of White Hill again. 12.2km, with 375m of ascent. | Man of Kernow1 | 15/04/2023 |
From a pull in parking area at a cattle grid near the Cross of Greet. Following the fence to reach the summit and returning the same way, Three mile in roughly an hour and a half. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 07/04/2023 |
Train to Bentham, taxi to Cross of Greet, walk up slight very boggy path by fence. Return to road and up Hailshowers Fell opposite. Then north along boggy ridge to Burn Moor which was hard going. However things improved after Burn Moor with a decent track back to the road and ten walk back to station | trimarc2 | 24/02/2023 |
From Cross of Greet, following the quad tracks to the summit. Boggy... great atmospherics at dusk on the summit made up for wet feet. | geralddavison | 14/01/2022 |
White Hill and Ward's Stone from Wyresdale. | tomd4 | 12/09/2021 |
fine views over forest of bowland | richardrosser | 11/08/2021 |
From Cross of Greet to the NE. I mentioned to my companion that it looked like someone else had been up here recently and I see from the logs that is indeed true - missed you by a day Paul. A remote spot that's for sure. | Father Ted | 11/08/2021 |
From the Cross of Greet. Followed the fence, stepping over it a couple of times to avoid the wettest areas. A Wheatear flew ahead of me for a while up the fence line, showing me the way. | paulhilder | 10/08/2021 |
MC JC O. From the high point on the road. Missed the path on the way up but followed on way down. In future, follow fence to left. Follow all the way to top. | Martin66 | 08/07/2021 |
From road summit at Cross of Greet, followed tracks to top along side fence. Went to Trig and tower. | PeterD | 02/07/2021 |
Plan was a circuit from Trough of Bowland road summit to Whins Brow, Wolfhole Crag, White Hill, Middle Knoll, Baxton Fell and back over Whins Brow to start. Followed trod to N of fence from cattle grid, and near kissing gate to S of fence realised I should omit Whins Brow on the way out so cut N to path by border fence to Wolfhole Crag and on to White Hill (regretting short cut from Boston Crag to summit, a bit S of TP). Crossed to path to Whitendale and uncycleable bridle path towards Brennand Farm. Tired old legs elected to pass Midddle Knoll, and map reading revealed that POI for Baxton Fell SE of Whins Brow (at Clader Moor) was not at a summit, so I went direct to Whins Brow, up from farm but through a gate and following fence to NW of Brennand Stones direct to summit. S of fence down, crossing at aforementioned kissing gate to return to cattle grid. | henryfm | 28/06/2021 |
Pleasant, airy walk along the fence line from Cross of Greet. Highest point appears to be around 673589 on fence running NNW from just N of trig point. | Nick Down1 | 28/06/2021 |
Jubilee Tower - Grit Fell - Ward's Stone - Wolfhole Crag - White Hill - Cross of Greet. With JH, AB, PW. | Mark Jackson | 19/06/2021 |
Easy ascent following good path from the pass | conanharrod | 04/06/2021 |
As others suggest, good parking at Cross of Greet Bridge then follow the track to grouse butts where it fades away. After that, in cloud, the bog, while fairly dry, made it hard going and difficult to keep a good line of direction. Visited the tower and trig. Cloud lifted as I was coming down, opening some fine views and making the effort all the more worth while. | Pete West | 03/06/2021 |
From park to SE. Misty. Trip with Stu from Leeds. | davechaffey | 02/02/2021 |
36km walk from home duew to lockdown. | atreides7887 | 08/11/2020 |
From Cross of Greet Bridge. On ascent I left the track early over Snout Berry Hill then followed a fence NW to the top. Boggy sections so better to make full use of the track. | squeegs | 24/09/2020 |
White Hill, Wolfhole Crag | keithouk | 15/08/2020 |
Parked on verge at SD69249 54800 then mountain biked up road to SD66762 57449. Bouldered on the Cowstones with Mart then followed fence to summit and visited tower. Superb views and met a friendly shooting party on route. A superb trip. | John Eley | 14/08/2020 |
Parked at Cross Greet Bridge, along estate track till it faded away. Great views of Dales round to Morecambe Bay. | CJM | 21/07/2020 |
Parked at the top of the mountain road at Cross of Greet and followed soggy route along the fence to the summit trig. 5km in 1 hour there and back. | silveracorn_alan | 07/06/2020 |
steady trudge through boggy ground. Interesting tower near trip point. | gettingonabit | 07/06/2020 |
From cross of Greet. Remarked to chaps sunbathing at top that it felt like cheating starting so high up - but its still a bit of a slog, especially with the mid afternoon sun.
Ground mostly dry with the odd squelchy bit. After the first gate ots probably easier to have the fence on your right on the ascent.
Sat in a patch of shade under the middle tower for a bit- just to try to cool down. Super spot really, looks like very few venture up here though. Last Bowland Marilyn having done fair snape a few hours earlier. | stig_nest | 28/05/2020 |
1/3 - first summit on lengthy walk from Cross of Greet to take in all three Dewey Summits - fine and dry underfoot. Took a little longer than expected - it's quite a long one | wychwood | 25/05/2020 |
From Cross of Greet bridge. 2 hours round trip. A great feeling of remoteness up there. | NormanW | 24/11/2019 |
Parked on Rivington Road in layby then followed path to summit. Very sludgy today and poor views due to weather. Definitely need to return in better conditions as there is a lot more to explore in this area. | ironwolf | 06/11/2019 |
From road pass, up faint and wet path under a fence that leads up bleak moorland to summit. | Topographer57 | 11/09/2019 |
Solo | Vin | 08/08/2019 |
After camping down the Croasdale me and Bethany climbed a few boulders at cow stones, and used this hike to warm up a little. Pretty boggy and marshy on top with no proper path. Brilliant views to Yorkshire dales, Morecampe bay and Pendle. | ByronHaywood | 21/07/2019 |
Followed a good path before it petered out. Stick to the fence line. No views, claggy. | Play2End | 18/07/2019 |

With Val. From Cross of Greet. A tedious flog following fence across wet ground to the summit. Visited the old structure near the summit. Back along the same route. Not my favourite hill!! | mike.hoult | 09/05/2019 |
With Mike | Val Deisler | 09/05/2019 |
From Cross of Greet cattle grid. Thick mist, no wind, eight inches soft snow. Could only just see tower at top. After doing Yarlside and The Calf, en route to Wilms. | Rounsfell | 24/01/2019 |
From Cross of Greet (parking). | iangalbraith | 20/10/2018 |
Parked on road to north east 682 609 by cattle grid. Followed fence to top. There a better track to west of fence. After heavy rain was surprised that going was reasonably dry. A very dull hill! | Deedubr | 22/09/2018 |
From Cross of Greet. 30 mins up to White Hill, then long slog to Wolfstone Crag. Returned same route.4hr round trip. | Longwojo | 05/08/2018 |
From highpoint on road to north. Parking for 3-4 cars. Quick walk Via path alongside the fence to summit. | N.Morters | 30/07/2018 |
From Cross of Greet bridge in midst of 2018 heatwave - underfoot was dry! Followed the track to south of Far Costy Clough to point 513, then via tower and trig to Cross of Greet. Continued via Great Harlow and down wall to road 300m se of cattle grid. Great views of 3 peaks. | Clive G | 14/07/2018 |
Circular route from Slaidburn via Bridge of Greet, returning on track on opposite side | Buteobuteo | 07/07/2018 |
Walked on my own from Cross of Greet Bridge. Glorious sunshine with a welcome breeze. The final approach to this summit when the path ends is hard work. There are a lot of peat bogs which were dry today but still quite hard to negotiate. The views from the summit are worth the effort though and the onward route is fine. | flockwatcher | 01/07/2018 |
Solo. Parking area by Cross of Greet. Then bog and tussock following the fence to trig pt & nearby tower. 86 mins. | ADT | 05/04/2018 |
1/4 Marilyn Day. White Hill from Greet Bridge. 7.5km with 330m ascent in 2 hours. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 25/03/2018 |
High wind and lashing rain, so just a quick up and down from the top of the pass. | ijpowell | 23/03/2018 |
Parked at cattle grid near Cross of Greet remains on the old county border of Yorkshire West Riding and Lancashire, did however find a more suitable parking area 15m north of grid on right.
Followed fence 1.5 miles from road all the way to trig pillar and summit, joined by Gina.
Still boggy despite being partially frozen and ankle deep snow. Must be much worse when temp above 0°C. | mntainman | 18/01/2018 |
With Steve | GinaSmith | 18/01/2018 |
Might have seen colinfielding in passing. And met friends of the Crumblies too, heading to their hill walking club AGM. Tower near the summit for was built for sighting during construction of water tunnel to Manchester. | Minto | 03/11/2017 |
with Andy out and back from cattle grid very wet underfoot | colinfielding | 03/11/2017 |

From the gate at the top of Woodhouse Lane to the top of the Hornby Road and then up the fence line to the gates at the top. Last halfmile to the summit a tortuous struggle through hags and tussocks. Heather in full bloom brightened up the scene. | reaper | 27/08/2017 |

Bagging day in the Forest of Bowland after days of rain, we must be mad! Parked at Cross of Greet Bridge, walked up wet lane to grouse butts to end, guessed which way to go then walked across easy short heather then hideous water-filled groughs to tower and along fence to trig, followed fence along to top of pass, terribly boggy for some of the way, very wet for entire way, crossed pass and hideous bog channel in the col, then up easy grass and heather to Hailshowers Fell, easy terrain back along and down steep side to car park by bridge. Earlier that day bagged Top of Blaze Moss and Whins Brow (surprisingly not very boggy. 9.1 miles altogether, lovely and sunny. | DanTrig | 04/03/2017 |
from cross of greet cp, followed fence up and back, 5kms, hard work | bardolph | 24/01/2017 |
Last Marylin in Region 36 bagged (Alan Dawson Book) - from Greet Cross followed fence to summit - orange yellow brown black green - intense colours under a shifting sky with a bit of squelch underfoot - summit shrouded in cloud (mossy trig and sighting tower visited) a bit of cloud gazing then back down distant displays of sun searchlights crossing the hills. A special lonely place. | briandavies | 30/12/2016 |
From Cross of Greet bridge, mainly pathless. | rhalstead | 27/12/2016 |
A 90% enjoyable walk by starting at Higher Wood House and following Hornby road to the top. Easy dry grass up the fence to the plateau. This is followed by 10% gruesome slog to the trig through bogs, tussocks and mega hags. But it's only a short distance, so if you're out for a nice walk with minimal suffering, this could be the route the take. | Gill | 28/08/2016 |
From Cross of Greet. Followed fence line to trig. Tried following 4x4 tracks down but just as wet & boggy after a while. | mart0797 | 27/07/2016 |

From Cross of Greet bridge by track then over Snout Berry Hill to trig. More direct descent. Heather bashing but not too bad and sunshine to boot. | SS | 25/04/2016 |
Solo. Followed fence up from parking area at Cross of Greet. No dogs allowed on this Access Land. | Dangerous Dave | 19/03/2016 |
A nice 10 mile round walk including the 2 Towers on White Hill and Bowland Knott. Underfoot conditions were slightly damp, it helped that we'd have a week or 2 of fine weather before the walk otherwise it'd be quite boggy. The walk is over moorland with no real defined paths (other than the gun track up from Greet Bridge). Some ability to navigate is required. | b2dan | 14/02/2016 |
Visited with TMD and Dawes Scorpio on a walk in the area. | meltdiceburg | 16/10/2015 |

From big car park at Cross of Greet bridge. Path peters out quickly and then a flog through heather and bog. Not very white. 3rd of 3 | Thearlaichdubh | 27/10/2014 |
Cross of Greet Bridge, along Crosty Clough passing Shooters' Huts, to White Hill. Back via Botton Head Hill, Whitray Fell, Cross of Greet back down road to Cross of Greet Bridge. Very difficult to find way up over difficult terrain. Easy walk back along a fence. Great views of 3 peaks of Yorkshire. | Lazylizzie | 14/09/2014 |
Skirted it on an 11mile walk. Expected to be 6hrs but raced through in under 4. Fine weather. Dry in preceeding week so feet stayed dry. | laneyx | 13/09/2014 |
From Cross of Greet Bridge up track and faint path to pathless heather, down Hawnby Road then cut back across to Slaidburn Road. | Flatfield | 01/06/2014 |
A mindless flog from the the road following a fence. Mercifully short. Put my foot down a boggy hole whilst taking a photo of Mrs Mindlessflogger 'enjoying' the tedium of it all.
Only the discovery of a large glacial erratic beside the road to the north made the diversion on the way home worthwhile. (You cant miss it, its got steps up it). | mindlessflogger | 19/05/2014 |
Short walk from Cross of Greet and surprisingly dry underfoot. | bolton | 24/04/2014 |
Cross of Greet (plenty of parking) - Followed path alongside fence to summit. Tower to west was built as a sighting tower when surveying the route of the Haweswater Aqueduct. (PM) | gerrybowes | 24/04/2014 |
Really enjoyed ascent from Cross of Greet, a beautiful spot. The 1/25K map a big help- landrover track to shooting hut, steep zigzag above the hut, then I could follow tracks all the way to Far Costy Clough. Followed clough bed as far as I could- this usually works to give good underfoot on peat moors and did today. About 200 m across poor terrain to the top; the 'ridges' looked awful going so I went back down by the clough, enjoying views of Craven/ 3 Peaks ahead, clear sunny day. | pwheeler | 19/04/2014 |

A long tranquil day walking the Hornby Road from Slaidburn to Brookhouse. White Hill was straightforward enough to add into my route, plus the rain held off. Can't ask for more than that. | Alex C | 10/08/2013 |
Third visit to this Marilyn and trig. I expected the hill to be a lot drier than it was after our dry summer but yesterday's rain left the path of sorts beside the fence very wet. Walsh Fell running shoes were great in this sort of going thought. | Dugswell2 | 01/08/2013 |
After visiting Easington Fell I drove here and walked (unaccompanied) from the Cross of Greet Cattle Grid SD 682608 by simply following the fence to the summit and returning via the same route. I stayed for over 30 minutes and operated on VHF for SOTA. | G4OBK (Phil) | 07/03/2013 |
should be called Black Hill! very much like the one with that name much further South, thankfully the bogs were, in the main, frozen. | joseph mitchell | 02/03/2013 |
From Cross of Greet bridge, up shooters track. Looks easy on the map, it isn't! Track disappears (don't be fooled by Google Earth)& then very boggy all the way to summit. Hazy sunshine, still some snow around, enough to mask thigh deep bog for the unwary(me!). Apart from farmer near beginning we didn't see a soul for the whole trip. Not my favorite Marilyn. | ianandbarbara | 18/02/2013 |

Permissive path, no dogs. | BLACKHILL | 12/02/2011 |
Came up from Cross of Greet Bridge via shooting cabins. A lot of powder snow still lying with a thin crust, plus the heather made it a bit of a slog. The trig point is impressive though. Excellent views of snowy Pen y Ghent to north and Pendle Hill to s | BobKelly | 28/02/2010 |
Parked on a snowy road summit and followed a fence in ever deepening snow to the top of this hill. Nice views of the Yorkshire Dales. | ChinnockC | 19/02/2010 |
