Parked in the layby near the top of the road in Cowpe to the N. Followed fp up onto the plateau and a large path zig zag until the wind turbine emerged from the cloud. Visited the boundary hp on the side of the track (very small cairn marker on N side) and across the bog to the main hp marked with a clear small cairn. Completed the circular walk past Waugh's Well and back down to Cowpe. Drizzle and cloud began to lift on the final descent. Solo. | richard69 | 14/12/2023 |
Parked near top of public road in Cowpe and followed tracks up to plateau. Took in the trig point and viewfinder on Top of Leach before following the path to the wind turbines. Broke off across the squelchy moorland to find the small cairn at the summit. We managed to keep dry feet though.Rounded off the day by visiting the trig pillar on Cowpe Lowe before following footpaths back down to the car. Be aware that not all the footpaths appear to be marked on the ground. A great circuit though and we were lucky with the weather. | KevPalmer | 22/08/2023 |
From car park by Owd Betts. It is very boggy. | lenman | 22/04/2023 |
Although I've been up here many times I've never specifically tracked down the exact summits, so tonight I had a nice evening walk from Turn, over Whittle Hill, the two summits on Hailstorm Hill and then the trig capped off with a beautiful sunset. No problem finding the well marked summit. /D | meltdiceburg | 18/04/2023 |
Rossendale Round bagging hills and Marilyns, with drifting snow on the Moors. | PhilipChaston | 11/03/2023 |
Following on from Cowpe Lowe, dry underfoot until the crossing to the Boundary top, then squelched all the way. | colinfielding | 07/02/2023 |
Parked at Cowpe in a layby just before the end of the road; circular walk around the reservoir over Cowpe Moor to the top. Glad of wellies today. Very clear and some great 360 views | Rockdoctor | 05/02/2023 |
MC From Cowpe and along Rossendale Way. Very post industrial. | Martin66 | 24/12/2022 |
Parked at Boarsgreave, then along ROWs to Top of Leach. Along county boundary to the wind turbines, crossing Hail Storm Hill boundary top en route. Then a desolate direct ascent of the Hill proper (bring wellies!) and on over Cragg Quarry to Cowpe Low. Returned via ROWs to the houses below. | summitter | 31/10/2022 |
Much easier find than the Boundary top cairn.. a useful stick popping put the rocks allowing locating on the bog top a doddle. | Alfa1M | 25/10/2022 |
Accross a bog approx. 1 km from top of windfarm. Small pile of stones marked the spot | chevyfire | 14/09/2022 |

Parked in layby opposite new builds at Boarsgrieve, the old carpark under the dam has lots of no parking signs. Up road past scrap farm to old quarry, then east onto track. Followed this into Crag quarry to just past tramway info sign, then bike tracks through quarry and short walk to summit cairn. Back through quarry and along track to Cowpe Low. Down track and non-existent paths to start. | Flatfield | 06/07/2022 |
Parked on street outside Cowpe village memorial hall. RoW up between house and farm onto Rossendale way, then the full circle to include the trig. | iangalbraith | 03/07/2022 |
2 of 3 starting in waterfoot on 7 mile hike. Lovely sunny day. From cowpe lowe. Marilyn no. 61 | The-Z-Man | 21/06/2022 |
2/2 Hail Storm Hill Boundary followed by the Marilyn Hail Storm Hill. Up from Cowpe after parking at the new builds near the Mill at the end of the road - good parking. Went up the North side of Cowpe reservoir and the path climbs well here up to the Pennine Bridleway and Rossendale Way then used paths to the Trig Point, then on to the Boundary (use your grid reference and pace about and you find the tiny tiny cairn) then direct as a dye over the not too marshy ground in summer to the Marilyn and down via the interesting mine workings. Made a nice two hour walk on way home after checkpointing at the Trans Pennine Hundred (LDWA) | nickywood1 | 05/06/2022 |
Came up from Cowpe reccy using the broad track to the quarry and then the MTB tracks thru that to the top. Reached stones at the top - every mound around looked higher. Returned the same way. Great views and nice weather. | robphys | 07/05/2022 |
From Rossendale Valley up Rooley Moor Road then onto Rossendale Way and across moorland, finding pile of stones at summit. | peter4lc | 21/01/2022 |

From Cowpe. According to my OS app the spot height is about 30m from the small pile of stones | paulhilder | 09/08/2021 |
From Cowpe, parked by old Day and Sunday School, headed up track immediately to SE, followed sundry tracks up to disused Cragg Quarry, through quarry and up on to moor proper and summit, meandered back, eventually descending along the Pennine Bridleway back to Cowpe and up road to car | kdbennett | 27/06/2021 |

Hail Storm Hill hardly an appropriate name today as the whole country baked under a quite extreme late August heatwave. | Alex C | 24/08/2019 |
Parked at free car park off Cowpe Road (SD83405 21409) which isn't obvious to find after braving the rush hour traffic on the M60. Then set off in full waterproofs in the rain up to Cowpe and Boarsgrove. Had to drag the dog along as it was wet and windy!! Past the abandoned vehicles to the reservoir then up to the MB quarry. Borough HP not obvious in the mist (used GPS) then along to the summit cairn and across to Cowpe Lowe. Cloud lifted and gave great views of South Pennines. Took off waterproofs and ran down to car with a wet and tired dog! 9.2km 339m ascent. | John Eley | 09/08/2019 |
With Val. Weather very hot Parked just past the new housing at Boarsgreave and walked to place where there are many derelict vehicles then sharp left up path to bridleway and onto the TP first. Past the old quarry workings and on to find the small cairn that marks the true summit. Went to the county top after then descended by outward route | mike.hoult | 22/07/2019 |

10km trail run from Cowpe - saw some interesting mountain bike trails on an old quarry and a fire! | ByronHaywood | 23/04/2019 |
Came up from Cowpe, and walked along the ridge first to visit the trig point before coming over the moor to this point. Well, its nothing to write home about that's for sure! | Father Ted | 12/04/2019 |
bagged while out trig hunting | SeanTither | 27/03/2019 |
Evening run from Boarsgreave. Parked above new small housing estate. Track up to what’s best described as the house were londrovers and things go to die... sharp left track to pick up bridalway then the old quarry rail trackbed. Shortly after Quarry info sign struck up on Quarry path then open moorland to small cairn. Irony...slight hail on way up.. | N.Morters | 16/01/2019 |
went to trig point first. boggy and misty on top. | gettingonabit | 06/01/2019 |
Revisit on Christmas Eve to bag as a Marilyn. | silveracorn_alan | 24/12/2018 |
From ESE across moor from boundary top. Marshy in places but partly frozen, but not especially rough.
2ft high cairn easily visible from about 700m away. | Nick Caunt | 13/12/2018 |
From Cowpe (parking easy br new houses) up and back. Easier on way back as I cut straight to quarry area and its myriad of tracks. 100 years since Armistice Day - Lest We Forget. | SS | 11/11/2018 |
From near new houses in Cowpe, past all the old Land Rovers onto hill, following paths up to wind farm to the county top boundary and then on across moor with no path. Wet and flat, but HP easy to locate. Path off towards quarry to north towards Cowpe Lowe. | PeterD | 06/10/2018 |
Circular walk from Cowpe. Dry underfoot, excellent views. | Winterfloodian | 05/05/2018 |
Parked near pub on A680 (approx SD831159) then cut over to the right of way then followed foot tracks to approx SD835169 then used wind farm tracks to get me close to summit then wandered through bog to summit. Found small cairn using grid ref on hill-bagging. Cheers. | assynt_bob | 03/05/2018 |
One of three from the parking area in Cowpe - sign says this will be closed from 5th May. Up to Cowpe Low mostly along the bridleway then a slightly boggy walk from the old quarry to Hail Storm Hill and the county top. | the_adam | 21/04/2018 |
From the County top over thankfully frozen tussocky bog to reach a neat square cairn at the HP, slightly N of the OS Spot height of 477m. Cold easterly wind, bright sun, blue skies and hazy views. Onto Cowpe Lowe. Parked near houses in Cowpe. | Denise | 24/02/2018 |
4th and final hill of the day ( i didn't know about the boundary log!) on a route from Hapton station to Whitworth to complete Topo section R01- The South Pennines from Liverpool to Nottingham, climbing Great Hameldon, Cribden Hill and Cowpe Lowe, descending SE to drop onto a track merging with the Rossendale way, passing some Belted Galloway cattle, taking pics and a vid before being forced off to detour by an intolerant cow who followed me for another 300 metres. I continued direct for the summit, finding the small pile of stones recording 478m @ SD 83500 19349. I continued on and my nearest point to theoretical 477m spot height was at SD83475 19289 recording 476m (according to OS maps spot height is at SD83483 19288 so approx 80m further South than summit) Amazingly vast flat tundra-like plateaux. I headed NE paralleling some quarry workings on a path dropping back onto the Rossendale Way that merged with the Pennine Bridleway, veering off this to take a fp all the way to Whitworth. | Dazingdale | 10/12/2017 |
From Borgreaves, small layby opposite new houses. HSH boundary first then on to the Cowpe Lowe trig pillar. | jonglew | 10/11/2017 |
