From Nether Wasdale lovely day | jocks1 | 31/05/2022 |
Initially up Irton Pike, having parked in the old quarry below. Then along the ridge to Irton Fell, then taking a cross country route to Great Bank. Descent from here along the forest road (much damage from Storm Arwen), and back along the tarmac road, taking a short detour over the gate to the top of Plumgarth Hill on the way to the quarry car park. 10km with 460m ascent in 3 hours. Parked between Cinderdale and Forest Bridges on grass. Went up Latterbarrow (201m) first. Hot and dry. A revisit on a very leisurely Round 2 of The Birketts. With Alfie. | Dangerous Dave | 25/04/2021 |
Irton Fell and Great Bank | tomd4 | 26/10/2020 |
From Eskdale Green by the toilets, up track past Japanese Gardens woodland, curving North West to cross the Miterdale Road, then up crossing three forest tracks using same bridleway all the way to near the final slopes of Irton Fell. At this point head North East along the highest bit of forest track, this takes you all the ay to a gate 200 metres from the summit. Use the faint path to the Knoll as described by others, then curve up to the summit with some wobbly tussock grass but take it slowly and you are soon safely there. About 1.5 hours total. | nickywood1 | 13/10/2020 |

With Tali, wet and windy. Done the top many times but keep forgetting to log. | Mountain Goat | 02/03/2019 |
Obstacle-free route - from path/forest track junction at NY 13745 01800, gravel forest road has been extended to just E of wall at NY 14045 02075, from where felling/extraction vehicle has made a rough track, through wall at NY 14337 02085, and up to rock-studded knoll at NY 14480 02070, where there is a faint fork. 50 m of easy brashings, leaves 150 m of 'post-holing' in deep tussocks to top - low level ruined wall just before top has several easy crossing places. All on FC land, whereas route Southwards along E side of wall from the Irton Pike - Whin Rigg ridge is on neither FC nor NT land and fence in S 'corner' has been renewed. | Isbjorn | 12/09/2018 |
WOs 45; Bs 40 and 41. Torrential rain all morning at Ravenglass but dry p.m. though high fells under cloud. Went up Irton Crag by the Wasdale bridleway and then along the ridge to Irton Fell - hard work as ground very soggy and paths like rivers after rain. Descended to little col for Great Bank. Very difficult and unpleasant ascent and descent through deep heather and bracken with lots of bog and felled tree debris but mercifully short. Returned via forest track to rejoin bridleway. | BURGESS | 26/07/2017 |
Small parking area in old quarry at 122012 (Space for 6-8 cars) After bagging Irton Fell, dropped down to the wall/fence corner at 142021 Over fence & then ENE up vehicle track through felled area for about 150yd Turned right & 200yd along tussocky ridge to unmarked summit. Returned to fence corner & then NW on RHS of fence to gate in wall at 140024 Back down Irton Fell track. (S) | gerrybowes | 20/07/2017 |
Irton Fell and Great Bank from Porterthwaite. | rhalstead | 15/04/2017 |
From Porterthwaite then followed east wall of felled forest and traipsed across brushwood and bog that could've been worse. On to Irton Fell. | Wycombe Wanderer | 04/01/2017 |
tough little climb over felled trees should have followed path to irton fell and climb from that side which was the way we came down walked with Andy and back to ravenglass on ratty | colinfielding | 20/12/2016 |

From Eskdale Green / Miterdale then return via blind tarn / Blea tarn. Lovely relatively dry underfoot, steep face and lots of closed paths due to forestry. | Karmakarl | 07/03/2016 |

Descended from Irton Fell through the devastated forest. The top is untouched - heather and is fairly easy to walk through. A self made solo descent through Merebeck Gill to the track at 142016. | bolton | 02/11/2015 |
Similar route to Eddie end yes YUK | robert | 13/10/2015 |
From below in Miterdale, park at the old crossroads half a mile before bridge and take the old bridleway to Irton Fell, so easily up the hill crossing the forest track 3-4 times. At the final road either bear right to pass through forestry working (if allowed) or continue on and skirt around Illgill head to Caddy Well. That way a simple cross of forestyry ops road. Final summit assault is through tussock grass and some bracken. Glorious views to coast, Muncaster Fell and Scafell range. | nordicstar | 01/10/2015 |
Extended Wainwright's Irton Pike route to include Great Bank, (yuk) and Irton Fell (brill). Great Bank over Tonka tracks through felled, pine detritus just to north of summit - Ratsville. | Eddie | 05/09/2015 |
Parked in the Old quarry CP by the side of the Eskdale Bridge to Santon Bridge Road NY 121012 > Illgill Head > Whin Rigg (Wasdale) > Irton Fell > Great Bank > Irton Pike > Old quarry CP | Tony Hartry II | 23/06/2015 |
Ascended from dead end forest road from the NW. This was being worked on and now extends to about 30m short of the wall junction to the north of the summit. There are good faint paths from there and the stream, wall and trees are easily negotiated.
On the return I headed for Caddy Well. This saves descent but the trees were much thicker and denser. A bad choice. The field below Caddy Well is also boggy and the rest thick spongy grass. | Nick Caunt | 09/04/2015 |

Diversion on way back from Illgill, Whin Rigg and Irton Fell. Straightforward until last 200m at junction of forest, flattened forest and deep heather & grassy tussocks. Latter made for rough going. Return over ridge to Irton Pike via the flattened forest wasn't as bad as it looked. | Aye Jimmy | 02/09/2014 |
Ascended ridge via Greathall Gill, diverted S for Irton Fell and Great Bank before returning to main Illgill Head path for the ridge walk. Couldn't find to this Birkett; after descending from Irton Fell crossed a b/w fence and made the best of it over very rough, steep ground to summit. Superb views over to Muncaster Fell. | jonglew | 09/09/2013 |
Easy parking Miterdale. Via Merebeck Gill west side - pretty awful - as felled forest goes it isn't too bad. Then grass and path to top. Better route to take the other track which comes to a dead end then not too much felled forest | destaylor | 29/08/2013 |

From quarry CP via Irton Fell | Anduril | 05/06/2013 |
Easy access from Irton Fell by climbing over 3ft wire fence and gap in trees. Returned via same way. | PhilB | 11/05/2013 |
Very steep direct ascent from the Miterdale car parking area. Had to crawl through the access gate into a pheasant pen but negotiate a very tricky, 8 foot high wire fence at the other side in order to avoid doubling back. | moorsman | 20/04/2013 |

After Whin Rigg and Irton Fell. very disappointing little hill. hardly worth the bother! Easiest way at it is not through the bulk of Miterdale Forest but to descend from Caddy Well see map above and over a little fence and through 5 metres of trees then | benarbia_8 | 27/02/2010 |
Fantastic crop of bilberries on here. Sod of a hill to climb up though, heather was waist high. | Crib Goch | 11/07/2009 |
