A beautifully sunny day - warm enough to sit and soak up the rays low down but cold NW wind on the top. 'Hundreds' doing the climb up from Ambleside today -being a sunny Sunday. Not everyone looked destined to make it to the top judging by the numbers sitting down or a rest on the first uphill. We were against the flow - up from Troutbeck again (4th ascent in 4 days) to meet Darren in A'side to walk back via Robin Lane to sit in the sun and have an ice cream. 3 hours walking,4 hours discussing planets, relativity and Morocco with Darren!Chris Pearson24/03/2024
Hattrick of ascents over 3 days. Nice to be able to walk from the door. Colder today with dusting of snow on higher peaks. Another 3 hr morning circuit with L, this time up Nanny Lane first - nice and mostly gradual-ish on stony track then stepped, Down the steep side to Ambleside using the secret fell runners grass route to avoid pigeon footing down steps. Met a woman coming up who had left Kent at 1am and just arrived having driven up overnight, and keen for a walk before checking in to her holiday cottage at 4pm. Using my new Merrill trail shoes as finally just thrown away, with much sadness, 2 other pairs of disintegrating trail shoes & 1 pair of lightweight boots -all having shared many an adventure!Chris Pearson23/03/2024
Lovely sunny morning but a keen NW strong cod wind, so a 3hr mornings walk wit L from Troutbeck down Robin Lane to A'side then up Wansfell Pike with the wind behind us. the stepped path all the way makes for quick progress and nicely steep to work the leg muscles. Down Nanny Lane back to the house, with a stop to chat to Martin the farmer -always fixing or building something - today flood drainage for a holiday cottage that got flooded recently.Chris Pearson22/03/2024
rain, rain, rain, mist, rain, rain, rainstuwig21/03/2024
21st ascent. 21st March - 1st day of spring. Back at Troutbeck for a week -out before 9am up Nanny Lane to beat the heavy rain by noon (entry also today on hb by stuwig of rain, rain, mist, rain, rain, mist, rain etc proves we were wise!). Just light drizzle now in strengthening wind which became unpleasant on top as its always windier, colder and wetter on mountain tops. Scurried down path to Jenkin Crag -to make 2 hr loop back along Robin Lane -one of the most walked paths in Lakeland on the Wansfell round from Ambleside -but not on this damp morning. Wore my lovely new Merrill Goretex trail shoes straight out of the box - now inevitably dirty and scuffed,, but good so far.Chris Pearson21/03/2024
From Ambleside.Peterb18/03/2024
Parked at Church Bridge below Troutbeck, then straight up to Sour Howes, north along the ridge to Sallows, and back down to Church Bridge along the Garburn Road. Then up the other side through Troutbeck and along Nanny Lane to Wansfell Pike - busy. North along the ridge to both summits at Baystones. Continued north down to the A592, then across tough ground to Troutbeck Tongue, before dropping steeply down into the valley and back to Troutbeck. All the ground is saturated - especially the section from Wansfell to Troutbeck Tongue! 22km with nearly 1200m ascent, taking me 8 hours, just in the daylight throughout!silverwolf_alan01/01/2024
A Five and a quarter mile walk from a pull in south of the pub in Troutbeck - Town end using Nanny lane to reach the Birkett tops of Wansfell pike, Baystones(Birkett's top) and the Synge top of Dod hill, returning via a tricky decent to the road due East all in Two and half hours.WAYNE ROWLETT12/12/2023
Light rain all day and a rapid thaw underway of yesterday's big snowfall. Went up again from the house in Troutbeck in the afternoon to see the contrast from our virgin deep snow trail breaking yesterday. Today - 'our' trail had been compressed (by probably a dozen hardy locally based walkers who did not need a car to access the hill) and had become wet slush and slippery ice. Much nicer and drier to plough through the soft snowfields either side. Saw no one - not surprisingly . The Alpine like dazzling views of yesterday were now a messy black and wet speckled drab landscape as the snow pack melts down. All the making of a superb winter climbing season as the big dump of snow is now wet through -just needs to freeze to bond and make perfect firm neve -watch this space. 4th ascent in 4 consecutive days. 20th ascent overall.Chris Pearson04/12/2023
Wow! Woke at Troutbeck to 15cms deep soft fresh snowfall -more having fallen overnight to that of yesterday. Cumbria Police had declared a major incident as roads ground to a halt with unexpectedly heavy snow. With L out early in boots and gaiters to plough a furrow up deep virgin glistening slopes, following from memory of 18 previous ascents where the path goes on the upper slopes. Hard work but great mini mountaineering especially in drifting cloud and flat light losing definition of angles. Nobody else had been up before us. Great romping descent same way. Magical. Cattle had been brought into the field in front of cottage to be fed hay whilst the cat was very testy about a white world.Chris Pearson03/12/2023
Heavy snowfall carpeting the landscape after an icy week. An impromptu solo ascent after Troutbeck Christmas Fair. Vastly too hot in too many layers . Snow kept falling. Dozens of happy walkers as ever on this popular hill doing the loop. Been reading the intriguing UK Natural Capital Accounts 2023 which states each of us outdoor sorts is saving the Govt £326yr by being in better health compared to those who spend less than 2 hours a week in nature, who are more likely to seek NHS treatment (incl. for mental wellbeing and anxiety). Since Covid lockdown 1.1 million fewer people in UK gain health benefits from spending time in nature. The value of those lost health benefits was around £390 million - which is what the NHS would spend to treat those people. The health and wellbeing benefits to spending time in nature are well known - particularly tackling mild to moderate depression, stress, and anxiety. Everyone should perhaps be prescribed a snowy hike up Wansfell.Chris Pearson02/12/2023
Iron hard frosty morning - waited until 9.30am before starting with L from the Troutbeck cottage for the sun to bring some lovely warmth. Hard ice on the path and crunchy grass. Crystal clear blue skies yet again (!) with sharpness that we have become unusually used to - only so many times you can say amazing views. Up Nanny Lane down Jenkin wood 2.5 hrs - lunch then I went off for 3 hrs tops circuit from Staveley.Chris Pearson01/12/2023
Another gorgeous sunny morning after a sharp overnight freeze - bogs mostly frozen and ice around. with L up from Troutbeck to Baystones to enjoy the ridge walk to Wansfell Pike - 25 people crowded on summit at 11am on a sparking Saturday . We passed another 57 (!) on our Nanny Lane descent back for lunch.Chris Pearson25/11/2023
Lovely morning walk with L up via the grassy Jenkin Wood path. Good to have L back on the hills after 7 days illness recovery. Gorgeous autumnal sunshine -and sharp views with low sun to distinctive Coniston Fells, Scafells, Crinkle Crags, Langdale, and everything else -all looking splendid. Busy today with retired folk able to enjoy a good weather Friday out of season. Oddly one chap of similar height and build was dressed just like me in fell shoes, running tights, shorts and thermal top and hat - pretty much the same dark colours as well! Lovely walk down dropping out of the cold wind to warmth and lunch at the Troutbeck cottage.Chris Pearson24/11/2023
Afternoon walk today up and down -making sure my sore calf is Ok before running. Dry and calm and grey - 2 out of 3 ain't bad. 14th ascentChris Pearson20/11/2023
Back staying at Troutbeck. morning run. Managed to run up every step, all the way and down again. Light rain and clag. Feeling fit after an autumn of hill training for the OMM. Not the best running route as rocky steps & stony track - needs concentration. However on plus side not too boggy.Chris Pearson19/11/2023
Lovely autumnal afternoon -after a lovely valley walk towards The Tongue from Troutbeck cottage with a recovering L, I surprised myself by running up here (shorts and t-shirt) non stop from half way up Nanny Lane (after walking the very steep start). Ran down again carefully - good quad exercise and focus on the many rocky bits. Felt OK. - as ready as I can be for the OMM in N Wales in 6 days?Chris Pearson22/10/2023
3pm solo ascent after the rain stopped and having just arrived back at Troutbeck for 4 days. For a change I carried along Nanny lane to the end where a waterlogged path led up to Baystones. Dry and breezy under grey skies for a gentle jog along the switchback ridge to Wansfell Pike. 8 days until the OMM in N Wales so sort of tapering. Jogged down a new route for me -the lovely Jenkin Wood path with glimmering views over Windermere as a shy sun came out and back around to Troutbeck with wet feet in my fell shoes but dry otherwise.Chris Pearson19/10/2023
From YHA Windermere, up road then Nanny Lane to Baystones/Wansfell then along ridge to Wansfell Pike, down towards Nanny Lane then NT permissive path to join Hundreds Road then Robin Lane & road back to YHA, some Sun, dry & cold breeze across tops..apricorum17/10/2023
Race the bus. Solo morning yomp over the top from Troutbeck cottage to Ambleside timed to meet L off the bus from Kendal-leaving at the same time (the bus won by 10 mins!). Blowing and damp with one of the incessant rain showers hitting me hard near the top - but wonderful to be the only one up here on a brooding morning. Slipped over in the mush going down - backside and rucksack covered and impressive mud splattered up one leg. Walked back via Jenkin Wood helping L carry her stuff including a bag of wool! Spotted an abandoned tent/ wreck in a field - returned later to clear up mess later - full of soggy abandoned gear sleeping bags, mud, food, pans, gas, vodka! They must have fled in a storm when tent poles snapped and everything got wet We carried away 2 bin bags of rubbish - told the farmer who will go up for the rest.Chris Pearson04/10/2023
Simple up and down on main Nanny Lane path with L in morning form our Troutbeck cottage before meeting Martin in the Old Post Office tea shop for a prolonged catch up and cake. Good to note lots of broadleaf saplings have been planted on the lower slopes in their protective cages to re-wood the naked landscape.Chris Pearson29/09/2023
Jogging circuit solo from Troutbeck having just arrived to cat sit again. For change I sought out the rough terrain on access land for OMM training and came up from Town Head over 348m minor summit @P15 (Lamp perhaps?) Tussocks to waterfall gorge of Hal Ghyll crossing the Hundred track then as cold rain drizzled ignored the path round & went up rough grass straight to summit - people and dogs. Jogged the ridge to Baystones then back over Dodd Fell -tussocky, deep grass, reeds and swamp - no sheep nibbling here - just lots of broadleaved saplings. Access land led to track back to road at Troutbeck.Chris Pearson26/09/2023

Wansfell and Troutbeck Walk. Summer Holiday with Simon to Ambleside August 2023.dancingqueen10106/08/2023
Family wainwright with all the Lilly's including Rupert, Bassett's, Chris, Nathan and Rachel. Parked up Troutbeck and walked over Nanny Lane up to Baystones - very wet and cloudy, particularly on top. G,D&R went back down to their car, and we continued on top Wansfell pike. The weather cleared and we got some decent views over Windermere. Dropped down into Ambleside, had a quick dip under Stockgill force before heading to the Inn for a pint and chippies.ByronHaywood01/08/2023

A quick up and down Nanny Lane from the cottage in Troutbeck before the November rain re-started (which is becoming like an all-day breakfast - always present but less welcome). The well made stony stepped path is as quick to go up as down as coming down you need to ensure you don't slip or turn an ankle. Pitied the roofer working on the slates on neighbours roof all day in the rain.Chris Pearson10/11/2022
Becoming our regular walk from our pet sitting cottage in Troutbeck. 3hrs -round Robin Lane to look at Jenkin Crag then into Ambleside where our (monthly?) ration of 2 dry hours was used up and the light rain started on and off for the return home steeply up and over Wansfell Pike on the well-made stone steps/ path on this very popular walk.Chris Pearson09/11/2022
6/11/22 3 hr circular walk with L, back for a week housesitting at Troutbeck - starting with a lovely downhill lane walk for a couple of kms to Newclose Wood (P20) lovely autumnal leaves, then down to lake side paths into Ambleside and back 'home' over Wansfell Pike- first taking a look at rushing Stock Ghyll waterfall. Grey, damp and gloomy with cloud base @300m shrouding the upper hill - but not actually raining. Caught up an adult group from Liverpool who had caught the ferry up from Bowness and were now walking back to Bowness over the misty Pike.Chris Pearson06/11/2022
First Saturday of October half term week and the most promising dry day of the week ahead. Non-stop troops of mostly non-fell walkers; families, youngsters, couples, singles, children, dogs, toiling upwards from Ambleside. It's a stiff climb and not everyone looked like a sure bet of summiting. We got asked by one chap if he was half- way yet - when I truthfully replied No and I saw his face drop I asked him if he would prefer a different answer? With L from our housesit at Troutback along the boggy Wansfell ridge-down to A'side - Loughrigg minor tops and (after hiding from sharp showers in an outdoor shop) back via the lovely Skelghyll Path that climbs then contours to Troutbeck.Chris Pearson22/10/2022
Bit of a pull up from Ambleside with Jim, Cat & Jus on a day of high winds and brutal squally showers. Did all three summits on the ridge. This one was extremely busy, the other two less so. Stockghyll Force was impressive on the way up, the stone-flagged path on the way back down was treacherous in the wet. Not my most pleasant hill experience this one.wheresthepath01/10/2022

6 mile circular from parking area near Troutbeck church. We followed the minor road, then Robin Track around the edge then ascended on Hundreds Road up to Wansfell Pike's Summit. We followed the lumpy sometimes boggy ridge along to Wansfell Baystones top, then along path joining Nanny Lane Track back into village then field paths across to church. 450m ascent. Perfect conditions with wide reaching views of all the big mountains. Very surprisingly they were all out of the cloud. Quite a few people about especially on Wansfell Pike.DanTrig15/09/2022

Afternoon walk with Lindsey on my second round of Wainwrights. Parked in Ambleside and walked from town centre via Stockghyl Force lane then up the pitched path to Wansfell Pike. We then followed the wall for just over 1 mile to Baystones Wainwright summit. Lindsey waited there while I bagged Baystones Birkett summit. Cloudy at first, cleared during the walk. Great misty views over Ambleside and along Windermere.Skip16/05/2022

A full circuit of the hill taking in the four DoBH summits. I was on the hill early and on my return to Wansfell Pike from Baystones I couldn't resist telling the gathered hordes that they hadn't actually bagged the Wainwright and that they needed to wallow through the bog for another mile or so! Judging by the lack of erosion between the two there must be a lot of people falsely claiming to have done this particular Wainwright. It reminds me of Slioch when most people only reach the lower summit and claim the Munro.thenomad10/04/2014
