Return visit, again via Golden Hill. Noteable that some forest paths are becoming harder to follow and there are now fallen trees across them as well.
From clearing at NO 246 149 there is a new bulldozed mucky forest track almost to the summit. | Fife Walking | 28/01/2024 |
Limited parking on the B936. I chanced my arm by parking at the narrow track entrance SW of the summit and legged it to the top and back in double-time. Thankfully it was easy access all the way. If the entrance gate is open you may prefer to risk driving along it until you reach a sharp left turn, where there is space to park a car or two. | summitter | 27/09/2023 |
On tracks from road to west. New track leads from SW onto the summit area. | Winterfloodian | 01/09/2023 |

Pleasant wander round Black Hill, Woodheads Hill, Cairnie Hill, and Cowden Hill from Abdie Church.
Easy access to hill by extraction track from west | daviemore | 22/12/2022 |
Forest track from the SW is good, could use mountain bike or even drive. Gate was open when I walked up and closed but not padlocked when I returned. Forestry workers thinning out the trees. | Adrian | 26/08/2022 |
Followed Nigel Morters' route: the felling track leaves the forest road at the start of a widening containing a picnic table. There is a tiny cairn of small stones. | Nick Down1 | 13/03/2022 |
Fun in the forest trying to find top. | Play2End | 21/03/2021 |
Parked on unclass road to the east, followed track, into the forest which is easy jungle stuff. Then onto Woodheads Hill. | The Fife Flyer | 21/02/2021 |
From GR 241148 where there is limited space to park at track start WSW of hill (opposite southern entrance to Pitcarilie House). Up the track as it bends north between the trees. As the trees on the west end (at a concrete base of old farm shed) there is a gate onto woods. Follow short distance upwards, as it turns deep into the wood from the edge after 50/80m a felling track breaks off north, the high point is not to far to the west from the track as it levels off. 3/3 HuMP | N.Morters | 16/10/2020 |
Circular walk from Newburgh taking in Ormiston Hill, Lumbennie Hill and Black Hill. Ongoing forestry works up here meant a rough harvester track now goes to within about 15 metres of the likely summit. Still no views though. | benalder284 | 20/06/2020 |
Fence from field to N is tricky so best use gate at 246150 | 49pp | 28/02/2020 |
Parked in Auchtermuchty Common car park at 23662 13444 and walked up the road to the vehicle track, following it up through the wood. Through a gate into the wooded area, along the track, then through trees to the summit. Returned through more widely spaced trees to the track. (Would have been better to have followed the track in the forest a little way round the bend to the right on the way up) | LizH | 24/11/2019 |
This was fun. From Grange of Lindores via Golden Hill, then into forest at NO 25036 14671. Useful paths through forest as far as NO 25128 14947. Then tried finding route alongside lochan - bad idea as I'm not a duck. Retreated back to corner of fence and followed fenceline south to NO 25036 14671. Reasonable track from there to picnic table for final thrash through trees. On to Woodheads. | Fife Walking | 14/10/2019 |
Route from 241148 crosses line of gas transmission pipe. | NormanW | 27/04/2017 |
Parked on verge on bend at 241148, then followed the forestry track round to 30m below summit, then up thinned forest to cheeky wee cairn. Fields to W are ploughed. | Thearlaichdubh | 28/03/2016 |
From the B936 along the track and through the forest. A wee cairn marks the top! | Play2End | 22/11/2015 |
Parked near Woodmill then used to track to bag Cowden Hill then returned down track. Then up field towards Woodheads Hill which has Grange Hill trig near the summit. Continued off-piste through woods to farm track then oat field towards woodland on Black Hill then returned back down to Woodmill. | Dugswell2 | 30/07/2015 |
parked 400m north before track cut up through wood to rejoin track to the top. | robertphillips | 20/02/2015 |
Parked where track leaves road just N of Woodhead. Tracks to get to N edge of trees, then back in for the last 100m to summit. (Same parking spot for Cowden Hill, as per fasgadh.) | mae | 08/02/2015 |
From B road to w. Parked on verge of track before gate. Cheekier, but easier parking through the gate on RHS. Cut the corner in track - up through woods on tracks made by cows. Track in forest now, smooth, dry and dusty up to the picnic bench. From here up through trees to summmit. Descent NW to forest edge, and back down track. | Minto | 27/09/2014 |
Forestry operations mean that the track from NO241147 is now horrendous soft wet mud after the bend, and it gets deeper higher up. Best to avoid it entirely and just walk on easy grass to the west of the trees that are west of the track, cross fence where there is a rubber sheath and stone, then edge along the slime into the main forest NW of the summit area until you see the picnic table. It's not bad after that, some trees have been felled but it's ok going, still no view though. | alda | 25/02/2014 |
From Grange of Lindores by farm track going SW and then SE to "viewpoint" beneath pylon. Then over fields to fire break which I followed round hill in clockwise direction until I recognized table and benches. | russell61 | 13/03/2013 |
Approached as the crow flies from Grange Hill trig. Trees tricky but manageable. | agentmancuso | 02/04/2011 |
Approached from West along decent track then followed forest ride to immediately south of the summit. Last 200m is a fight but easier from south than west which was gorsy and more conifers. | andy | 15/05/2010 |
Parked on verge at 241 149. Followed track SE and then N. Through gate to track which turns S down a firebreak. Bizzarely there is a picnic table. Then through trees to top | chrisbien | 08/05/2010 |
pleasant walk, +/- open wdld at summit, no view. park on bend, follow tk to 105150, when it turns SE, continue E to top | RHW | 25/12/2003 |
Easiest to stay in the field until the overgrown track appears on the other side of the fence, cross it & start on the track but head up vaguely R until above where the brash is. Once there head slightly R again in clear trees to summit, small pile of stones. | Belfarm | blank |
