Parked about 200m west of Darloskine Bridge on good tarmac turning area. Followed SUW to summit. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 18/10/2023 |
Drove up 700m past Derry to park NX 2575 7338 as summer vegetation just encroaching across the track too much. SUW leads just past the summit and trig pillar. From there headed due N through forest to pick up the track at the disused quarries for Benbrake Hill. | jonglew | 23/08/2021 |
With E. First post lockdown walk. Parked just after Darloskine Bridge where there is roadside space and followed Southern Uplands Way route to summit. Great 360' views. Clear, dry but biting cold wind. Saw no-one else. | Beeliner | 28/04/2021 |
On SUW. | PGCE | 12/09/2020 |
Parked on 'hard standing' at NX27689 73290 (about a km further along there is a sign excluding unauthorised vehicles, but nowhere there to park),and followed the SUW route to the top. Missed the gate to shortcut the track loop - just beyond the entrance to Derry Lodge, and before the old cattle grid, but spotted the shortcut by the wall on the way back. (Nearly missed the SUW sign at NX 24053 73697 for the direct path to the summit too!) | LizH | 19/07/2020 |
Hill is ruined now by turbines. Easy walking using SUW, though fly infested. With B and R. | jenx | 16/07/2020 |
Third visit during a sat at the Beehive bothy. An attempt on Eldrig Fell was foiled by appallingly rough ground so a third visit here was a consolation bag. Whose idea was it to pave the SUW with clinker? | Colin Crawford | 11/03/2020 |
From Glen Kitten road end, mostly on endless wind farm roads. Should have taken a bike. | PeteN | 13/07/2019 |

A five mile walk taking an hour and a half starting from a gravel track west of Polbae (which is signed Southern Upland Way) as written in Johnny Muirs book. The starting point for the route in the book is in a authorised vehicle only area so I would recommend using a pull in area a mile before his starting point just to be safe, although if your not put off by the sign you could drive right up to the base of the hill and leave your self a ten minute walk. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 21/07/2018 |
Drove past Derry and along the continuing good track with just a few drivable potholes. Left the car at junction and strolled up the excellent path (Southern Upland Way) to my final Historic County Top. Great viewpoint on a fine, hot morning. Drove further along track to wind farm quarry for Benbrake Hill | Campbell Singer | 03/07/2018 |
Second visit as I was doing a wider circuit. Parts of the SUW very plagued by windthrow | Colin Crawford | 23/03/2018 |
Construction crew improving the trail, started today. | Bigmiggy | 09/10/2017 |
Lunch stop on Southern Upland Way. | clivevilla | 31/05/2017 |
6th and final top of the day on an elongated loop from New Luce, climbing Craigbernoch Fell, Big Craigenlee, White Fell, Far Cairn and Benbrake Hill using track that profiles around Western flank before using a forest ride to join up with the Southern Upland way although it stopped about 40m away so had to push through the tightly packed conifers to break through! Very interesting briophytes though! Had lunch at the top. Excellent views. Continued on the Southern Upland way then on minor road to New Luce. | Dazingdale | 16/04/2017 |

1/6 First of Six on Scottish Borders (Craigairie Fell/Benyellary/Meerick/Kirrieroch Hill Boundary/Kirrieroch Hill/Bennan) | Fergalh | 13/08/2016 |
A late walk on a fine evening, so drove carefully to the track junction below the summit climb. Magnificent views marred by hellish new windfarm. | Nick Down1 | 29/07/2016 |
Aborted morning climb in East Lothian because of thick snow - arrived at 3:00 with a couple of hours light remaining. Parked in a clearing just after Darloskine Bridge and walked along Southern Upland Way right to the summit. The clearest late afternoon imaginable. Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Lake District, Goat Fell - and was that Snowdon far far away? Back to car just as darkness fell. 6.2 miles. | callumorr | 15/02/2016 |
drove up to within 400m of top from derry. | robertphillips | 08/09/2015 |
Parked close to Derry. An easy one and a half hour walk to the summit and back. With GB. | bolton | 18/07/2014 |
Parked just beyond end of unclassified road, about 250m E. of Derry – W. along forest track to junction with path at 241737 – Up path to summit trig point. (PM) | gerrybowes | 18/07/2014 |
Easy walk, took in Wells o' the Rees, and Linn's tomb on nearby Craigmoddie. Had inteneded heading directly from Craig-dhu cairn to Craigmoddie but there is newly planted dense forest so used the Linn's tomb path to Craigmoddie, which was a liitle boggy in places. | borderterrier | 24/08/2013 |
It took longer to drive in from the main road than it did to climb the hill, but surprisingly good (if cloudy) views. Then on to the Merrick. | killiedaft | 30/06/2013 |
I had to wait 15 minutes for the 2 forestry men to remove the remains of a recently felled tree before driving to the cut off to the second last farm where I parked. Mist lifting so good views after reversing SUW to gain top. | Dugswell2 | 16/04/2011 |
Just as Andrew Cotton | chrisbien | 27/08/2010 |
Done on Southern Upland Way. | ngthack | 16/07/2009 |
Miserable misty day on the Southern Upland Way. We parked just short of Derry and walked in but the track is in excellent condition (better than the last few miles of tarmaced public road) and you could drive right to the foot of the hill. | andy | 21/06/2009 |
see TrigpointingUK.com for details. | RHW | 13/05/2007 |
On SUW on a well used farm road. Past Loch Derry onto WDP with signpost. To top at 15.00. Slight drizzle. | arranc | 10/04/2007 |
On the SUW. Jarred my right knee coming down (not used to carrying a full pack any more..) & it took months to recover. | agentmancuso | 22/02/2000 |
