Wet and windy day for a 3hr round trip from Kendal | trimarc2 | 21/03/2024 |
Parked by bridge over WCML and followed FP to Access Land as others. Did both tops, which look very similar in height. | IanHHill | 11/03/2024 |
2nd visit this year and then on to The Planting. Reversed the route to Kendal from The Planting. | trimarc2 | 08/02/2024 |
3 hr round trip from home. No cattle ! | trimarc2 | 02/11/2023 |
Parked in a reasonably generous bay on the road just SE of Wray Farm. Along roads to SW of The Crag Farm then over two gates and along fence line towards The Planting, turning N at the high point to the summit. Followed sheep trods and ATV tracks across Hay Fell to the trig and top of Benson Knott ... reasonable ground all the way. Once summited, headed NNE to pick up a ROW around Dockergarth's Plantation, then eastwards to The Slough and the Docker Lane road. Good wee circuit. | summitter | 07/10/2023 |
On paths from A685 to trig point, cairn and summit. | Winterfloodian | 23/08/2023 |
From Kendal Camp site on A6 via good paths and minor roads. Great yellow trig on joint top | Longwojo | 04/08/2023 |
From by the railway bridge. Summit is on the adjacent hill to the yellow trig. | clivevilla | 17/05/2023 |
Parked by railway bridge, up road to FP and then up to access land. Went to cairn and trig. | PeterD | 01/02/2023 |
As others, parked just W of the railway bridge, short distance along the road to the right of way, and up onto the hill. Interesting little gate in first wall, 2nd wall has a gate way off to the east near a wood. Trig point has been painted yellow! | LizH | 02/10/2022 |
2 x parking places at railway bridge (SD543953) – but nasty to exit – a blind bend on a fast road. Beware 1st waymarker which implies to go through a gate – just follow tk up R | Isbjorn | 26/08/2022 |
Revisit using bike for road part from Kendal. Very frisky cows on way down which charged me. Unnerving! | trimarc2 | 30/06/2022 |
From Appleby Rd. | Sedge | 02/03/2022 |
Revisit using bike for road part from Kendal | trimarc2 | 15/07/2021 |
From Kendal via Fowling and Paddy Lane. | trimarc2 | 02/04/2021 |
Space for one car at start of ROW to NNW. ROW to access land, then visited trig and summit. | PGCE | 18/02/2021 |
Solo via Fowling Lane. Freezing on top but beautiful clear sunset giving sight to the snow laden Howgills and out to the sea. | Fionalevey | 12/02/2021 |
Beautiful afternoon run with GFE from Kendal - 14km total and hit the summit just as the sun started setting. | Fionalevey | 07/11/2020 |
The space adjacent to the railway bridge was full so I had to start at Laverock Bridge. Otherwise it was a nice wander up. The hill was quite busy. Visited summit and trig. | Clach Liath | 25/05/2020 |
Up footpath from NNW then across access land to summit. Crossed to trig then down the same way. | davidpettit84 | 26/01/2020 |
Pleasant walk from the north, parking just by the bridge over the railway line. Path a bit intermittent but not likely to get lost. | Walker Dan | 19/01/2020 |
Walked by lanes from Camping and Caravan Club campsite north of Kendal up to Laverstock Bridge. Path from there up to the twin summits of Benson Knott visiting the cairned one first and then the trig. Took direct route from Benson Knott across pasture to The Planting, again visiting both summits. Then followed lanes down to the LDNPA offices in Kendal where I was working for a few days. Just under 13km in about 2 hr 15 m. | Herbert Anchovy | 15/08/2019 |
Evening walk over fields from near reservoir | N.Morters | 27/03/2019 |
Climbed from Morrisons car park via Riverside path, feild paths, quiet country lanes to railway bridge.Bridleway then taken past farm up to access land onto twin summit | robert | 14/01/2019 |
Parked at 542953 against the railway bridge. Short road walk east and then a track SE to a stile/gate at 549944. Then an ATV track to summit. Great views! Solo. One hour return. | bolton | 29/12/2018 |
Small parking area on W. side of railway bridge at 542953 - E. along road for 200yd and then up farm track and indistinct RoW to pedestrian gates by wall corner - Continued along indistinct RoW to step stile by locked farm gate and then well-used ATV track/path to summit cairn. (S) | gerrybowes | 31/07/2018 |
As others, from the layby by the railway bridge. What a cracking little hill this is! Odd that Wainwright didn't include it in his Outlying Fells given that it overlooks Kendal where he lived. Presumably the land was private at the time the book was published - now Access Land. Also it falls outside the LDNP although that wasn't a requirement for inclusion. | Crib Goch | 22/07/2018 |
Handy layby for parking immediately to W of rly bridge. Good farm track initially then directly over brackeny sheep pastures (2 stone walls to cross). 2 tops at the summit - one is the HP, the other has the trig pillar. | jonglew | 06/07/2018 |
With K from N. The first mapped field boundary S of barn area isn't there! | Ashley | 26/03/2018 |
Followed a footpath out from Laverock Bridge and back. Nice snow covering and good clarity. | 3 kinnears | 07/02/2018 |
Short triangular walk from houses on Appleby Road (you can park by rly bridge about 200 m away if needed). All on row/ access land Pleasant, to nice dry tops with good views; nicer way on return alongside old, mixed estate plantation. With Pete | pwheeler | 05/10/2017 |
on a long walk round the Kendal skyline | IWC | 08/07/2017 |
Parked in the layby near the railway bridge on the A685, to the north. Followed the right of way to a gate that gives access to Access Land. The RoW is indistinct after you leave the initial track but the walk through the meadows is a delight. Once on Acess Land a clear path goes to the summit. The view is fantastic, I could have sat all afternoon looking at it. This hill is a wee gem, the only downside is the scary walk along the A685 from the lay-by to the start of the RoW. | Sprog | 01/07/2017 |
Fine twin topped hill - unfortunately raining, so views limited, but could see Kendal & Morecambe bay. | ger | 30/05/2017 |
Up the bridleway from the N. From the summits, walked SE to cross the wall out and back onto The Planting, then S, easily crossing the wall to reach the footpath down the W side of Fisher Tarn. | Moorponder | 07/04/2017 |
Good parking on the Kendal side of the Railway bridge to the north (alt 143m). Easy path all the way to the open access. Climb over a stile then a good track across rough fell to the top. 3.49 km return. 1 hour. 143m ascent. | moorsman | 05/04/2017 |
A good walk up from railway bridge across the pastures then onto access land above. | jenx | 23/10/2016 |
Up from bridge to North, very dodgy walking back up to the FP with limited verge to escape traffic. Lane finishes shortly after farm building then unmarked path up to top field gate then higher gate. Having walked both ways the Southern approach is better, starts higher and the lane by the transmitter leads to a gate and access land. Good parking nearby. | nordicstar | 23/10/2016 |
On our way home from Westmorland - Parked on the A685 (next to the Railway Overbridge) back along the road to the old Tollhouse then up the track and across the fields to bag Hay Fell (Benson Knott summit) and trig on the secondary hill summit next to this. | briandavies | 30/05/2016 |
Kendal circular. | Smudge | 15/01/2016 |
Solo from bridge on A685. ROW through a couple of fields then open access land at the top. Nice enough summit with great panorama. | simon and co | 10/08/2015 |
