Parked in a layby near the Club House, along the road and up the track, briefly into the rough grass to the summit.LizH25/08/2023
A really nice country park, with excellent views over Manchester and back towards Kinder Scout and Bleaklow.justin_j_evans02/08/2023
Circuit including the viewpoint on site of demolished pub, war memorial and HP, at present someone has cut and trampled into the bramble thicket to allow a couple of extra inches of altitude. Good views.Nick Canute11/02/2022
5 of 6 on 23 mile bike ride starting in broadbottom. Weather started getting a bit better by this time great views. Steep descent back down into hattersleyThe-Z-Man10/02/2022
Very short walk from parking on the road at the top of Werneth Golf Course, Good view to Manchester spotlit in a sunny break in the clouds. 1/7 HuMPN.Morters05/02/2022
Train to Stalybridge, bus to Hyde. Walked up via Godley Green and Werneth Low Country Park. Views restricted by low cloud, but nearby landscape impressive.IanHHill02/02/2022

A quick visitM6KIO17/09/2021
From the country park Cp. Nice 2m route visiting the grassing mound which is fairly overgrown, also visited the track high point and brambles nearby.Jephcote8313/08/2021
Parked nearby. Visited mound and highpoints by track and brambles. Nicer views from golf course N of road.PGCE19/02/2021
With Isabel & Olivia on a circuit from Compstall on a snowy day.alistairpooler05/01/2021
War memorial summit to NW is more impressive; this one is cluttered with aerials and brambles. HP probably on track. Great views N. Parked at Werneth Low Country Park free carparkDenise 05/12/2020
A disappointing summit for such a well walked area in great countryside. The mound in the field next to the comms. compound can't be natural. Track to SW or brambly area beside it feel to be much better contenders for the natural high point. The lane down to Lumn must make an exciting drive in winter conditions!RichardM05/12/2020
From car park to west of war memorial.rhalstead14/06/2020
A great steep climb up from the R Etherow to the east on a fp (TPT) through beautiful bluebell and garlic wooded dell of Back Wood. Homeward bound now for last hour of a 7 hour circular cross country tramp to Cown Edge with L and the spaniels.Chris Pearson15/05/2020
Our favourite 8 mile run with L out along the canal then the 2 mile uphill. Shorts and shirt despite chilly 9 degrees and wind compared to sizzling 24 degrees yesterday. Still digesting yesterday's 25 person zoom covid lockdown catch up meeting for old Uni friends.Chris Pearson10/05/2020
Our 8 mile run on VE 75th Anniversary. Paused at the cenotaph to the fallen of Hyde and earlier the Romily/ Bredbury memorial where taking a name at random to research- Eric Timperley : RAF (Flying Office) -a pilot who at the age of 34 in the last year of WWII was killed in a dreadfully sad mid- air crash in Bedfordshire when their Sterling Bomber returning from a training mission over the Wash was flown into by a USAF Mustang - whether due to poor visibility, as a misjudged mock attack, or buzzing no-one can say -killing all from both planes. He is one of over 200 with no marked grave listed on the screen wall in Stockport Cemetery among 166 Commonwealth War Graves.Chris Pearson08/05/2020
Slow 8 mile run from the door reversing our usual route with L and just the one dog (Ralph). Best bit is the 2 mile climb up from Compston which gets you working nicely.Chris Pearson01/05/2020
A gloomy cold day before rain for our 8 mile circuit with the dogs. Gloomy also on Covid front with UK deaths now @27,000, risk and deaths for front line workers - lockdown now week 5 and uncertainty for jobs, economy, mental health, loneliness for self isolating older people. Hope though as we are over the bulge we are told. Bright moment as 100yr old Capt Tom made Hon.Colonel and had a spitfire & hurricane fly past, raised 30 million for NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden and stole the nations hearts.Chris Pearson29/04/2020
Just to the cenotaph and back today -3 hours with L the dogs. Cold and murky today after 2 weeks of sunshine -warmest April on record blighted by Covid-19. Saw the same Kuwait airliner climbing overhead that we saw descending yesterday -one of the very few planes in the sky.Chris Pearson28/04/2020
Out with the dogs again today for a reversal at a walk of yesterday's 8 mile run. Nicely varied - canal, geese, ducks (and chicks), aquaduct, locks, park, old mill, 2 mile steep uphill, long ridge grassy ridge walk, views, horses, nice houses and gardens. AND a rare sight -an aeroplane !! Kuwait on its fuselage - descending low presumably returning the stranded to Manchester airport - we saw one from Pakistan yesterday. Free books (and sanitiser wipes) by garden gate near hill top - L got Kes, I chose a railway theme with 'Main Line over Shap' written in 1967 as the M6 was being planned and 'BR Main Line Gradient Profiles'- apparently a classic of railway publishing.Chris Pearson27/04/2020
5 km 45 min uphill run ( first run for a while) from the door with L . Morning off for the dogs as Ralph the spaniel has a limp. Lots of folk out on this sunny ( again ) lockdown day in week 4 with police present quizzing those who had driven up to admire view/ picnic. Guidance issued to,police is that siting on bench for a short break during longer exercise is ok, but not sitting there for longer than exercise period. Also legally you can drive to countryside if your walk is longer than your drive, although Govt urging people to stay local to exercise and use nearest open spaces. We are Lucky to have this on our doorstep to begin all our outings on foot from the door. Visited summit bump. 1 hr 5 min route back down 2 mile track to River Goyt , to canal and back.Chris Pearson26/04/2020
Another long 4 hr+ walk variation from the door with L and the dogs on an even hotter day - sun hat and sunglasses. Canal (bread for the Canada Geese) to Brabyns Park - seeing John out for his run / checking the O posts and passing where the Rivers Etherow and Goyt join to form the Mersey. Then up from Etherow Country Park. Becoming used to great clear views in this week long sunshine (mostly) of built on plains of Greater Manchester below the Pennine foothills. Must have been far far less urban spread 200 years ago when the canals were built.Chris Pearson22/04/2020
Another exploratory 4hr circular walk from the house with L and the dogs. Becoming fond of the canal as a way out of town -a corridor of nature cutting through urban clutter. Lots of lambs and ewes -all numbered. Dogs well behaved on their leads. Not quite to the top today. 20% chance of rain was 80% short of the truth for last hour - well this is Manchester.Much towelling of soggy dogs required once home.Chris Pearson18/04/2020
Cherry blossom, magnolias, tulips and amazingly hot spring sunshine under a blue sky. Perfect for a 3.5 hr walk with L and the spaniels from the house. Covid-19 the only cloud on the horizon -now in week 4 of the lockdown. Heartwarming rainbows in many windows drawn by children - symbol of hope. Many folk out walking - keeping the 2 metre rule and friendly in the 'we're all in this together' supportive mood. Fantastic views over a pollution reduced Manchester. Sombre moment at the cenotaph monument to the 710 men of Hyde who died in WW1 - will there be a similar monuments erected to those NHS / care workers who are tragically losing their lives working on the Covid-19 front line? In 1921 when the monument was unveiled to a 15000 crowd the closing hymn was Lord for All Mankind We Pray - fitting still today. Later at 8pm tonight folk out on their doorsteps clapping the NHS workers. Our summit calm interrupted by a call informing us the house alarm was sounding - set off by the cat!Chris Pearson16/04/2020
A layby against the golf club then a very short 5 minute solo return to the summit.bolton11/03/2020

During a DofE from MarpleJK20/07/2018
Parked on road. You don't even have to jump the gate but can squeeze bewtween the gate post and the fence. The mound looks likely to be man made.clivevilla15/05/2018
Nice start to a 5 day break in Peak Dist, from free car pk in dis Uplands Quarry to cenotaph viewpoint (Manchester, Hyde and mts- even Clwydian, classic of Mottram church between Pennines either side of Longdendale), top of Apple Street, then along road to bag HP- a bit scrappy and views not as good as from cenotaph. Lots of people (and dogs) enjoying walk on a nice afternoon. With Petepwheeler11/03/2018
Bit of rough ground outwith the compound. Almost a drive by.jonglew23/01/2018

Parked in lay-by at SJ 96593 92985 and dawdled along past golfers and dag-walkers to the uninspiring summit. With AT and JT.Man of Kernow126/03/2017
Parked on road then went past dog walkers and golfers, jumped gate and onto grassy mound. Mart looked embarrassed!!As usual fog and cloud so no views.John Eley19/02/2017
1st hill of 5 today on a route from Hattersley station to Stalybridge. Through edge of houses to TPT then Track up past farm becoming Tameside trail to masts. Climbed over gates to grassy knoll and Also explored opposite side and Climbed over barbed wire fence into dense thicket of brambles and Rosebay willowherb But found this to be no higher So Grassy knoll wins! Pleasant views and surrounding area worthy of exploration. Descent via Tameside trail via Back wood with fantastic atmospheric green lane to Botham's hall.Dazingdale10/09/2016

With K. Lots of middle class leisure seekers about.Ashley17/04/2016
Another stormy day with snow on the high peak (Kinder Scout & Shining Tor). We head for something lower. From the country park car park we follow the lane up to the masts & summit once conquered we retrace our steps but overshoot to pick up the trig further along the hill. objectives achieved its back to the car as the next shower sweeps in.briandavies28/03/2016
