Roadside parking on Down Road to the N. & up to No 6 Ranchways. The bungalow, along with No 7, is currently undergoing a massive renovation/extension & the 2 properties will eventually be luxury houses. Had a word with builder, who was aware that it was the highest point in Portishead. After a few words of caution, he was happy for me to go through to the back lawn. | gerrybowes | 05/09/2023 |
Parked in Queens Road and spent 20min or so wandering around the various possibilities. The given GR on a secluded driveway at the end of Ranchways seems as good as any and my Garmin didn't reckon on any of the other candidates being higher. | milimana | 28/11/2022 |
Portishead to Clevedon Long Round | JazDisney | 28/03/2021 |
Parked on Down Rd so not quite a drive over Tump. Wandered around the candidate HPs btw there and Weatherley Drive. | pwheeler | 14/10/2020 |
Visited all places mentioned on here. | fosal29 | 04/11/2019 |
HP is indistinct point within housing estate, near boundary of Police HQ/ Aerial.disturbed ground. Either bustop opposite Gaunt's Close or nearby Ranchway. Pleasant walk around Portishead on damp blustery day. Old National Nautical School, built 1906, above Black Nore Lighthouse, now luxury flats, is impressive | Denise | 26/08/2018 |
Enjoyable walk along coastal path from Woodhill then a wander around the housing of Weston Down. All rather inconclusive but my vote goes to the grass verge E of the bus stop opposite Gaunts Close | RichardM | 26/08/2018 |
Found myself having parked about 4/500 metres north of the various road names that others had talked about this just qualifying HuMP summit, speculating about where the high point might be. With the waxing moon just 4 days away from the Friday night rising eclipsed full moon, posing behind an unusual mat tower behind Lyndsey close and not considering venturing into the brambly woods behind it in the dusk seeking doubtless fruitless higher ground. Previously, on what would've been my maternal granny's 110th birthday after popping into sainsbury and Aldi, Portishead I'd wandered along the summit path of the lower, most northerly of local TuMPs which should've had great views but hemmed on by trees north and south. With K. Expected Portishead to be bleaker. | Ashley | 19/11/2017 |
En route to Dartmoor and N Devon. Drove up into estate, high point must be that neat to road and mast. Didn't want to go bothering someone to go in their garden! | nordicstar | 05/10/2017 |
Top is in the area of bus stop and mast. | jenx | 05/10/2017 |

Lots of options, Harmony Drive, Ranchways, Weatherly Drive, Gaunts Close etc I'll even throw in Merlin Park, but think the bus stop on Weatherly Drive may just sneek it. Sure neighbourhood watch in this area can't figure out what goes on from time to time as visitors wander aimlessly backwards and forwards. | PeterD | 10/06/2015 |
8/8 of long day ! final one visited in dark...agree with all previous correspondents anywhere near the mast will do man has altered the top of this considerably | Fergalh | 15/11/2014 |
Had a good walk around, high point could be in a number of places | rhalstead | 09/03/2014 |
Parked outside No 6 Ranchway, ventured into veg plot in back garden after getting no reply to doorbell. | jimbloomer | 14/10/2013 |

Very difficult to find any natural high point as the environment has been so altered by man. Visited all the named points ranchway, harmony drive which at least had some views over the bristol channel.Weatherby road and gaunts cul-de-sac got similar height reading at all these places. | hodder | 26/06/2013 |
Very difficult to work out the exact highest point. Tried all the options put forward by previous baggers (thank you all for that). I vote for Weatherley Drive somewhere between Lindsey Close and Gaunt's Close, but probably wrong. Boring top apart from the views between the houses of the snow capped hills in South Wales. At least plenty of easy parking. | Hillsidenick | 31/03/2013 |
Very frustrating - I visited Ranchways and Harmony Drive but my favoured highpoint was on the main road at the corner of Lindsey Close. | Chris Peart | 04/03/2013 |
Portishead to Nailsea. | Smudge | 06/01/2013 |
Went to Ranchways. The sp ht is in the back garden of the second last house. | chrisbien | 20/05/2012 |
Summit is located on a private road in a residential area - boring, but we did it. | jonglew | 28/04/2012 |
A quick drive by on a day out trigging with Lyn :-) | heavyhorses | 24/04/2012 |
As Des, almost a one out of ten even on a GR8 sunny day. Various side roads higher than Down Road, I would probably choose the top of Harmony Drive. | Dugswell2 | 26/03/2012 |
Various candidates visited including another plausible place behind the Police HQ. | fasgadh | 18/04/2011 |

Housing estate | arranc | 25/08/2010 |
A long ridge with steep sides and a slightly undulating top all built over by houses. (one of which was lived in by Sarah – Darren's friend where we stayed the night – very handy). We visited many front gates, driveways and dead ends covering all possibilities –both that evening and next morning | Chris Pearson | 04/08/2010 |
According to gps which i know is not accurate high point on corner of main road and cul de sac. | DARRENG | 06/07/2010 |
Very dull indeed. The SW's answer to Crowborough although you can wander off down the hill and get good views of the Severn whereas Crowborough has no redeeming features. | Herbert Anchovy | 16/07/2009 |
Very boring. In a flat suburban road with no obvious high point. It is possibly ip the drive of the end house but it would have been difficult to explain to the owner why I was there so.... | clivevilla | 21/03/2008 |
Harmony Drive: highest point probably house/gdn. | RHW | 10/08/2003 |
